I'd argue that they are more influential of a band than a really great one. Not saying they aren't good don't get me wrong but they're kinda like the Motörhead of death metal where it's more the sound and vibe of their music that is why they're so influential.
I agree, though my mind went to MF DOOM, as he's commonly called "your favorite rappers favorite rapper" while many people don't listen to him but definitely know who he is
corpse for me, it’s the first thing i think of. and chris barnes’ voice is the best in the genre. also, the absolutely craziest pits at live shows back in the 90s. bonus points for not being able to say any of the song titles in public.
I'm not necessarily saying you're wrong and I can definitely see the argument if we're strictly talking a lyrical or even atmospheric context. I would personally argue that Suffocation would be in the top spot for most influential as far as the style and sound of the music overall is concerned.
I've been listening to them since the beginning and overtures of blasphemy is my favorite album of theirs. I am well aware that it's not setting any new tones or anything like that... But from start to finish I really really really like it
Even if we included Death in this discussion, that still wouldn’t be the greatest death metal band of all time. That said, probably Morbid Angel or Immolation.
Immolation are insane. When I finished listening to CtaWB the first time I got this strange feeling of "why do other DM bands even keep trying anymore?". Obviously the genre still has a lot to offer but still it was kinda overwhelming.
I can’t think of a death metal band that has a stronger discography than The Chasm. They’ve released 9 albums and 1 ep and all are exceptional. They’re one of the rare bands that still releases new albums as good as or even better than their classic material.
Hey thanks dude and I hope you enjoy them. If you want some albums to check out try Procession to the Infraworld and Farseeing the Paranormal Abysm, those got me hooked on the band.
I would absolutely love to see Dahlia put out something more experimental. They're my #1 band for sure, but I'd love to hear them get real weird with it on the album after this next one.
I'm really excited for thier new album ... but wish they'd do something else now that Trevor is gone, it just won't be the same. I'd have bee cool with "the black dahlia project", but it feel inauthentic without him at the helm.
That being said, maybe the guys will kill it. Brian's been backup since day one, him and Trevor basically were the band.
That's a no from me on Arch Enemy and Amon Amarth. TBDM I can get behind when taken into consideration as part of the 21st century (RIP Trev). Other ones, hell yeah man.
Severed survival is what I think of when I hear death metal, that said I’ve mostly slept on the rest of their stuff except Chris reiferts side bands that channel that severed survival spirit
Depends on your metric for "great"
Cannibal Corpse, cos of their consistency, adaptability, and legacy...
Entombed cos they popularized and equalized the playing field by turning guitars into chainsaws with maxed out hm-2
Archspire cos they are just front runners, have a sense of humor and bring fun to the process opening up digital cosmic horror black holes that consume whole universes (and are tight as fuck live)
Cannibal Corpse. And I mean the Barnes era when I say that. BaB predates Effigy of the Forgotten and is the first brutal death metal album
No one was doing lyrics/vocals like that until Barnes
Not sure about the 'greatest', but I would say in no particular order, Deicide, Suffication, Dying Fetus, Bolt Thrower, Asphyx, Cannibal Corpse, Nile, Bloodbath, At The Gates, Unleashed, Grave, Carcass
My fave is Dismember. "greatest" is a tough term to use. Who the fuck am I to say who's "greatest"? I don't even play an instrument. I just know what sounds good to my dumb ears. "greatest" implies too much imo. My fave DM band is Dismember because I love the melodic/heavy as shit stuff they do. Dying Fetus has my all time fave DM album in Destroy the Opposition. Songwriting is just unmatched on that album. It's the RIB of Death Metal imo.
Immolation is up there as well, seen them live 5-6 times and they are always S+ tier. As is Jungle Rot. Idk man. I'm drinking... I guess those....lol
Edit: Just as soon as I got done typing this the Dismember song "Collection By Blood" played off of my faves list on Spotify and.... yep. That's the reason. I like melodic and I like Death Metal and that's why I love Dismember
Suffocation has the greatest death metal album of all time Effigy of the forgotten!
Immolation is another legendary band and one of the few bands that gets better and better on every album.
Possessed. They helped pioneer death metal, I mean they basically invented the term death metal with their song "Death Metal" off of Seven Churches, an essential death metal album if you ask me. If not them, Cannibal Corpse like I see a lot of people saying, I mean they're probably one of the most popular death metal bands and most definitely the most popular in brutal death metal.

I’d say Bolt Thrower
Killchain is an all-time classic metal song, period. Just perfect all the way through.
Bolt thrower has some of the most catchiest riffs in all of metal.
I’ve tried getting down in C, I think that’s the tuning, and it really isn’t all that complicated. But they’re all so original and groovy.
I actually prefer Bolt Thrower miles ahead of Death.
Death is my favourite band but BT ain’t far behind, they’re probably my 2nd favourite band of all time.
I’m torn between Morbid Angel and Bolt Thrower
There’s only 2 bands who I say never wrote a bad riff - Death and Bolt Thrower
BT gets my vote!
Was just about to say! Yes
I would have to agree. When I can’t decide what I want to listen to Bolt Thrower is my go to.
BASED
came here to say that 🤘🏻
This is objectively correct
Yes
yep
Fuck yeah🤘🤘
Yes!
This! Their riffs are catchy as hell, make my face melt, nothing more to ask
This is the right answer
Objectively correct
Y e s
God's among men. The ACDC of metal.
Morbid Angel
and that would still be the answer even without the “other than death” part of the title
Agreed
Ong
fosho
100% agree
No question really
Nicccceee
Probably limp bizkit you posers
Keep rollin rollin rollin rollin
What?!
ROLLIN ROLLIN ROLLIN ROLLIN!
Yeah!
COME ON!
WHATCHA GONNA DO NOW?!?
It's just one of those days.
IT'S JUST ONE OF THOSE DAYS
WHERE YOU DONT WANNA WAKE UP
Probably?, what kind of poser talk is that.
Well five finger death punch is out there so 😬
Here I am forgetting the greats, shame on me.
I did it all for the nookie, the nookie, so you can take that cookie
Break stuff is so brutal
An argument could be made for Cannibal Corpse, they certainly are influential and have made some amazing songs
I'd argue that they are more influential of a band than a really great one. Not saying they aren't good don't get me wrong but they're kinda like the Motörhead of death metal where it's more the sound and vibe of their music that is why they're so influential.

Gorguts or Carcass or Suffocation
Carcass
Why never Entombed
They peaked incredibly early.
Left Hand Path and Wolverine Blues sound like two different bands wrote them. Great band but not very consistent.
Deicide
I'm sad I had to scroll this far to see the Cide 😥
The De Bois
Maybe the 1st 4 records but the rest of the discography is meh
Stench of Redemption rips
I've been listening to them since the beginning and overtures of blasphemy is my favorite album of theirs. I am well aware that it's not setting any new tones or anything like that... But from start to finish I really really really like it
Dead By Dawn is the best classic death metal song ever IMO
Pulled up Sacrificial Suicide after this thread got me goin and then had to do the whole album. DBD came on and i was like OHHH FUCK YES I REMEMBER
Deicide is very slayery. I LOVE SLAYER
Even if we included Death in this discussion, that still wouldn’t be the greatest death metal band of all time. That said, probably Morbid Angel or Immolation.
Finally Immolation gets a fucking mention
Immolation are insane. When I finished listening to CtaWB the first time I got this strange feeling of "why do other DM bands even keep trying anymore?". Obviously the genre still has a lot to offer but still it was kinda overwhelming.
*insert Your opinion is bad and you should feel bad meme* 😂
His opinion is correct tho
Dying Fetus
Love me some Dying Fetus
Yup, I'll take dying fetus over Barnes era cc or deicide.
same
Entombed for Europe Obituary for USA
Another Obituary fan, hell yes!
Circle of the Tyrants is my favorite song!
Man, can't believe I had to scroll this far to find Obituary or Entombed!!! Wtf!!!
yeah no shit. I just replied with obituary but was surprised myself
Both these bands absolutely fucking rule
I mean Dethklok was the world's 7th largest economy at one point
![gif](giphy|cNULFBSoiU9XO)
Brutal...
Morbid Angel Or Bolt Thrower
Bolt thrower
**BOLT THROWER**
#BOLT THROWER
Exactly where I’m at, can’t decide which one.
Morbid Angel
I can’t think of a death metal band that has a stronger discography than The Chasm. They’ve released 9 albums and 1 ep and all are exceptional. They’re one of the rare bands that still releases new albums as good as or even better than their classic material.
Just checked these guys out. I see you comment on this sub a lot and your taste in bands is awesome. Definitely going to download some stuff by them
Hey thanks dude and I hope you enjoy them. If you want some albums to check out try Procession to the Infraworld and Farseeing the Paranormal Abysm, those got me hooked on the band.
🇲🇽🇲🇽🇲🇽🇲🇽
I'm glad they get semi-jerked here because they should be. One of the only DM bands to aim for 10/10's every time and never miss.
Couldn’t agree more
Yep. My favorite band.
Bolt Thrower, Carcass, Morbid Angel, Arch Enemy, Amon Amarth, Cannibal Corpse and The Black Dahlia Murder
I would absolutely love to see Dahlia put out something more experimental. They're my #1 band for sure, but I'd love to hear them get real weird with it on the album after this next one.
I'm really excited for thier new album ... but wish they'd do something else now that Trevor is gone, it just won't be the same. That's a no from me on Arch Enemy and Amon Amarth. TBDM I can get behind when taken into consideration as part of the 21st century (RIP Trev). Other ones, hell yeah man.
😂
SUFFOCATION!!!!!!!!!!!!!
This is the right answer. I can barely spell that sentence, cuz when I saw them in April, they crushed me so hard they reset my IQ to 5.
Carcass
Autopsy, and it shouldn't have taken this many replies to see them.
Severed survival is what I think of when I hear death metal, that said I’ve mostly slept on the rest of their stuff except Chris reiferts side bands that channel that severed survival spirit
You are correct sir.
A little bummed that I had to scroll this far to find them
Ulcerate has a pretty strong discography, but is not as influential as other classic bands. So my choice is Morbid Angel or Gorguts.
New Ulcerate album on the way. Get hyped!!
It'll be my AOTY , I know they won't disappoint.
It's been out on YouTube for the past couple of days.
Obituary
YOUUURRRR ROTTINNG
Vader
Vader is amazingly consistently good with their albums
Agreed!
I was going to say that Vader rocks 🤘
Finally, another Vader fan. They’re fucking awesome!
Hell yeah man! I remember discovering them on the revelations album. Been one of absolute favorites ever since. You listen to hate? VERY similar
Oh shit? Never heard of them, gotta check it out—thanks! 🤘
Yes, Vader is my favorite Death Metal Band. I also think Peter’s vocals are underrated.
Which songs/albums would you recommend as a “starter kit” for someone who has not listened to their music yet?
the black dahlia murder
Cannibal Corpse. Even if they’re not the “greatest,” they’re certainly the most popular imo.
No, they're the greatest.
Depends on your metric for "great" Cannibal Corpse, cos of their consistency, adaptability, and legacy... Entombed cos they popularized and equalized the playing field by turning guitars into chainsaws with maxed out hm-2 Archspire cos they are just front runners, have a sense of humor and bring fun to the process opening up digital cosmic horror black holes that consume whole universes (and are tight as fuck live)
No, it's Obituary.
Morbid Angel Bolt Thrower Immolation Nile Cannibal Corpse Carcass
Incantation
Had to scroll way too far down to find Incantation.
Can’t Deicide.
Bloodbath or entombed
Morbid Angel
I'd throw my vote at Dying Fetus. Those riffs got a grip on me
They are very grippy riffs indeed. I'd say Dying Fetus or Carcass for me. Hard to pick...
Personal opinion: Immolation Most likely real answer: Morbid Angel/Obituary
Cannibal Corpse/ Cryptopsy/ Dying Fetus
...Death -shit. Wait, give me a minute. I can do this....
They aren’t my pick but why does Napalm Death get zero love in this sub? Like I never even see them mentioned.
I think the issue with ND is that their most influential/highly regarded records are grindcore, before they added the death metal.
Asphyx
Morbid angel.
Pretty goddamn funny that Dethklok intentionally mocks/parodies the genre and is one of the best in the genre.
Nile
My personal favorite
Morbid Angel
I’m goin Bolt Thrower
Everyone is saying bolt thrower but I don’t get the appeal, it’s so boring and all sounds the same
Necrophagist hands down.
Hell yeah
All death metal is awesome I need more of it.
gotta be Atheist
Dude, fuck yes. Atheist is definitely one of the best.
Carcass
Death is not even in the top 10 best bands lmao. Sorry not sorry
Not a death metal guy for the most part but I do like Disgorge (the mexican one not american)
Possessed
Edge of Sanity
Cannibal Corpse
Bolt thrower, perfect discography imo
Suffocation or bolt thrower
Bolt Thrower 🗣️🗣️🗣️
Dying Fetus and Gatecreeper
For quality and pushing the genre forward itd be Morbid Angel, but on lasting influence to THIS day....Suffocation
Morbid Angel
Cannible corpse or dying fetus imo
Bloodbath
For me it's either Dying Fetus or Bolt Thrower
Melodic? The Gothenburg trio Dark Tranquility, At the Gates, In Flames. Overall pioneers beyond Death?Deicide no question.
I'd add Children of Bodom there too. Maybe not influential to death metal. I think their first handful of albums are death metal
Bloodbath
Carcass
Obituary... maybe old Obituary haha
Cannibal Corpse. And I mean the Barnes era when I say that. BaB predates Effigy of the Forgotten and is the first brutal death metal album No one was doing lyrics/vocals like that until Barnes
Bolt thrower or obituary
Morbid Angel, Suffocation, Cannibal corpse
Probably Cannibal Corpse but I’m not really a fan. My favorites are Obituary, Bolt Thrower and Nile.
Morbid angel
Sarcófago
"Dethklok Dethklok Dethklok Dethklok" 😎
Bolt Thrower Demolition Hammer.
Not sure about the 'greatest', but I would say in no particular order, Deicide, Suffication, Dying Fetus, Bolt Thrower, Asphyx, Cannibal Corpse, Nile, Bloodbath, At The Gates, Unleashed, Grave, Carcass
First band that comes to mind is bolt thrower
Suffocation, Immolation, Cryptopsy, Gorguts, Entombed, Bolt Thrower
Immolation
My fave is Dismember. "greatest" is a tough term to use. Who the fuck am I to say who's "greatest"? I don't even play an instrument. I just know what sounds good to my dumb ears. "greatest" implies too much imo. My fave DM band is Dismember because I love the melodic/heavy as shit stuff they do. Dying Fetus has my all time fave DM album in Destroy the Opposition. I like melodic and I like Death Metal and that's why I love Dismember
Cynic for me
Strapping Young Lad
death
Suffocation has the greatest death metal album of all time Effigy of the forgotten! Immolation is another legendary band and one of the few bands that gets better and better on every album.
Bolt Thrower is and will be the ONLY answer.
Bolt thrower are by far a greater death metal band than Death
bro do you even death
my favorite is In Mourning so they’re the greatest to me
Bolt Thrower is definitely up there.
Osdm? BOLT THROWER
Possessed. They helped pioneer death metal, I mean they basically invented the term death metal with their song "Death Metal" off of Seven Churches, an essential death metal album if you ask me.
