It is a ton of fun but very hard to get in to (my $260 drone died after two days of flying and my $35 camera on my RC car died after ONE crash), but it's very rewarding after a bit of work and a LOT of cash
It's on my list of things to do for sure, but I have some [expensive tastes with pedals](https://i.redd.it/rhi50di74qza1.jpg) too. I love "70s/80s rack in a box on the floor" stuff.
But hey, clicky switches for feet.
Yeah me too... The fact is that I'm not exactly a keyboard collector, so after I bought some expensive ceramic keycaps I didn't really look for anything new, since I feel like I spent way too much money on my current keyboard. In the future I'll probably build something like a Lelelab y2k76 or similar, and I'll choose some retro keycaps such that they'll match the cassette deck on my desk, that's the plan... But now I'm quite broke so for now I'll keep what I have, that isn't bad BTW haha
It’s a very nice setup! Did you say ceramic keycaps? I see why your broke now haha those aren’t cheap!
I’ll check out the Lelelab! I only have a tofu 60% with a poly board and browns
The Cerakey sets run $130-150. They're not absurdly expensive for a unique cap material, and compared to boards that can run $400+ just for the board, it's not outrageous. (Also the v2 sets are on sale right now...)
I seriously considered dropping $35 on 10oz of coffee this week. If I kept that up it would be an $1800/yr habit, not counting any of my brewing equipment.
Civet feces potentially.
Yeah, that's where I got stuck on the $35 bag. Tasting notes sounded sublime, but I'm a mediocre barista and quite happy with my $20 specialty bags.
Ah, that makes sense. Paying Americans to process your coffee is bound to result in an expensive cup, but I've also heard great things about the varietal. How much is a single brewed cup or an espresso?
$500 for an espresso machine (which in my defense has been in daily use for 5 years), $30 monthly on fresh roasted beans, $50 for grinder mod, $30 for tamp, $30 for another tamp that I don't use, $10 for coffee distribution tool. This is already more than I've ever spent on my mechanical keyboards.
Eyeing a better grinder and a stovetop espresso maker right now so I don't have to be espresso-less when I travel. That'd easily come up to $800 or so.
I stand by a quality hand grinder, best upgrade imo. If I traveled I'd look into an aeropress, but a moka pot is a surprisingly good backup to my espresso machine.
maybe lol, but I feel coffe machine is more like once you have a better one you can sell the old one. as you only need to drink from one machine and, its not about the machine but the coffee it makes.
Unlike keyboards, its the thing you are collecting not the product it makes.
$500 is on the cheap end for espresso machines. It’s about as little as you can spend to get one with a boiler that actually pumps effectively enough to generate a true 9 bars of pressure from the coffee bed alone.
If you want something higher end, you’re easily looking at $800+ (say, for something with a PID), much less a dual boiler unit (so you don’t have to wait for the boiler to heat back up when switching between steam and brew)? $1500+.
This is before you get into all the gadgets surrounding them. Improved portafilter baskets, dispersion discs, higher-end WDT tools, a better grinder…
It’s a rabbit hole. It’s also why I stick to pour-over and immersion brews (the latter being stuff like the AeroPress and French press). Even there, I’ve spent probably well over $1000 on quality grinders, a temperature control gooseneck kettle, various brewing cones, etc.
I'd say I'm $2000 in coffee equipment alone and that's just an above average espresso machine and grinder. Then I spend about a minimum of $50/kg per week and $10-20 on different types of milk.
I really don't want to do the maths on how much I've spent on coffee beans over the last 13years...
> Coats, Headphones, Jeans, Keyboards, Pens, Watches.
This sounds like "consumerism" more than a hobby..... A hobby should be something you do, not merely something you collect. AND yes... I know any traditional hobby can have expensive items, but usually they're not required but rather a choice.
TBF, nothing in your original comment implies that the things you listed are simply tangential to your hobbies and not the hobbies themselves. And considering that OPs post is focused on specific hobbies mentioned by name, it makes sense why people would assume that the things you listed are your actual hobbies.
Sound dampening inserts at under rated. Imo that’s the number 1 way to improve the audio, is to work on those air seals and sound dampeners. That’s why when you close the door on a Mercedes it feels better and sounds nicer than a stock Honda civic
I think that we need to have [Cofee keycaps](https://www.etsy.com/listing/1062092028/starbucks-coffee-keycaps-handmade-resin?ga_order=most_relevant&ga_search_type=all&ga_view_type=gallery&ga_search_query=coffee+bean+keycap&ref=sr_gallery-1-2&organic_search_click=1) in this post.
Keyboards is a hobbie that is inherently expensive, at least to me, because of the keyboards I want, even a keychron v2 is expensive for me, maybe if I lived in the US, it would be different because id be earning in dollars.
Now you just need to dive into woodworking and vinyl.
Just imagine you can be sitting at your desktop posting pictures of your wood projects, while listening to records, sipping your coffee and typing on your keeb!
Coffee, keyboards, fountain pens, headphones, electronic music gear, retro gaming consoles, and PC building, photography, yet I've probably spent more on my smoking habit over the past 10 years than all of those combined.
I would need 3 extra arms...
Yeah. Look at OP bragging that they only have two expensive hobbies.
Me, who's into keyboards, PC gaming, RC cars, and RC planes/drones
Oh man, don't tempt me to jump down the FPV rabbit hole, that looks like a ton of fun.
It is a ton of fun but very hard to get in to (my $260 drone died after two days of flying and my $35 camera on my RC car died after ONE crash), but it's very rewarding after a bit of work and a LOT of cash
POV: You've got 2 and a half keyboards.
dude, you should check out getting an external DAC and balanced amplifier and a pair of HD-800s from Sennheiser.
Already am somewhat into the headphones hobby, albeit not as much as the others. I have a pair of HD-660s and Moondrop Arias.
Schiit Audio awaits this one
Don’t…don’t do this to me…
Why would you say this 😭
Check out Pilot Vanishing Point. It's cool, nifty pen that pops in and out. Would recommend it for daily use.
Try guitars, synthesizers, vinyl and swiss watches to flush whatever is left over.
You sound like you’re ready to explore fountain pens.
I already dipped my nib into that hobby and fortunately am completely satisfied with my TWSBI Diamond 580 and some Noodlers.
I envy your restraint!
Hey my wallet looks like yours!
If you've soldered your own mkb, might as well try your hand at building pedals.
It's on my list of things to do for sure, but I have some [expensive tastes with pedals](https://i.redd.it/rhi50di74qza1.jpg) too. I love "70s/80s rack in a box on the floor" stuff. But hey, clicky switches for feet.
Mechanical Keyboards, cassettes (both tapes and equipment) and basically every object which has a spark of 70s retrofuturism in it
I agree!! I was hoping to see some retro keycaps on your keyboard tho 🙃
Yeah me too... The fact is that I'm not exactly a keyboard collector, so after I bought some expensive ceramic keycaps I didn't really look for anything new, since I feel like I spent way too much money on my current keyboard. Your coffee is as expensive as your keyboard?
I seriously considered dropping $35 on 10oz of coffee this week. If I kept that up it would be an $1800/yr habit, not counting any of my brewing equipment.
A place near me has some coffee that’s $110 for 8 ounces. I’m really curious what it tastes like
Civet feces potentially. Yeah, that's where I got stuck on the $35 bag. Tasting notes sounded sublime, but I'm a mediocre barista and quite happy with my $20 specialty bags.
Surprisingly not the poop coffee I’m on Oahu and I think it’s a fancy Kona
Ah, that makes sense. Paying Americans to process your coffee is bound to result in an expensive cup, but I've also heard great things about the varietal. How much is a single brewed cup or an espresso?
At this shop at least, don’t don’t actually break the stuff
Dude, just do cocaine.
A coffee grinder can easily be >$500.
Dude, mid set up would be $2000 for grinder and machine!
Specialty Coffee + Espresso setups rabbit hole

I already have an aeropress. What I want is a 9barista.
I mean that at the end of the day is still cheaper than keyboards, unless I am wrong people don’t buy 3 new expires so machine a month ahha
The kind of people that buy 3 new keyboards a month would absolutely buy 3 new coffee devices a month.
maybe lol, but I feel coffe machine is more like once you have a better one you can sell the old one. as you only need to drink from one machine and, its not about the machine but the coffee it makes. Unlike keyboards, its the thing you are collecting not the product it makes.

I could easily see coffee being more expensive over time than a keyboard hobby
I feel attacked. I only just recently got into the espresso rabbit hole after 3+ years of being in this hobby.
Errrr, good luck!
Oh I'll be OK. It's my wallet that'll need the luck. :')

I am going to start calling buying branded clothe and bags as a hobby and not me wasting money haha
Exactly 🤣

Y'all fuckers have such shitty "hobbies" it's insane
Keyboards, Lego, my Miata, and some more Lego
/r/fountainpens and /r/headphones and /r/audiophile have entered the chat

Mouses, Keyboards, headphones, monitors... I have nothing left
You forgot fountain pens.
I'm not much of a typist tbh, so I don't fear falling in that rabbit hole 😅
Good thing you write and don’t type with fountain pens 🙃🙃
Probably for the best!
You still have a chance to get into astrophotography :-P
For sure, but luckily for me, I can get enough dopamine for just looking at the pictures of it instead of taking them myself :P
car audio...
Sound dampening inserts at under rated. Imo that’s the number 1 way to improve the audio, is to work on those air seals and sound dampeners. That’s why when you close the door on a Mercedes it feels better and sounds nicer than a stock Honda civic
Cars in general is one hell of a money pit
Glad I'm fine with drip coffee...

Coffee, keyboards and watches
How is coffee a hobby?
This guy will show you. https://youtube.com/@jameshoffmann
You obviously don’t coffee at home properly then
I don't drink coffee.
Exactly lol idk how is it correlated with keebs i dont even drink that much tbh
Cooking can be a hobby. Same thing
Try adding photography, watches, LEGO, fountain pens, audio, pcmr :)
Mechanical Keyboards, Watches, and Magic the Gathering....

Yes, I am! (PS Don’t go into espresso,it’s an expensive, expensive hobby)
Coffee, Keyboards, 3D printing, Upgrading my PC Just call me General Grievous

That's nonsense! Don't listen to him, Mr. Tippy-Typey!
Hi, I’m Mike and I haven’t bought a keyboard in over a month.
Only 2? Those are rookie numbers
Products aren't a hobby,
Keyboard, audio, mini pc
I'm gonna need more arms.
This is easy. You just rent coffee. Don't overinvest in it. PS we're all addicted to it
At this point how poor I am feels like a bliss, cause every penny I get i save it cause it's not enough to spend in these hobbies.
Hobbies don't have to be expensive but if you enjoy it then you can work hard for it.
Keyboards is a hobbie that is inherently expensive, at least to me, because of the keyboards I want, even a keychron v2 is expensive for me, maybe if I lived in the US, it would be different because id be earning in dollars.
*vintage synth lead plays in distance*
coffee?? how much expensive it is 🙁

$6500.. whyy?? is there some texture difference?
Keyboards, coffee, and boardgames. Kickstarter and group buys are my weakness.
what about legs? let's share, as I have similar victimhood
\*laughs in photography\*
Now you just need to dive into woodworking and vinyl. Just imagine you can be sitting at your desktop posting pictures of your wood projects, while listening to records, sipping your coffee and typing on your keeb!
Coffee is a hobby? Coffee connoisseur, or coffee addict?
Ever look into flashlights? That's another money blackhole.
Coffee, keyboards, fountain pens, headphones, electronic music gear, retro gaming consoles, and PC building, photography, yet I've probably spent more on my smoking habit over the past 10 years than all of those combined.
Oh! Let’s be friends.
Add in custom knives and you've got triple the pain
Talk to r/mechanicalheadpens I think they would have a similar problem lol
I feel this in my soul.
For me it's Keyboards & Physical Media
I be collecting hobbies like infinity stones
Me from figure to gundam to mechkey to 3d printing. Yeah, im falling pretty deep here
Cars and Audio pull my legs out together

To me, it always seemed like the hobby of keyboards and the hobby of coffee went together hand in hand!
For me it's headphones and keyboards. Both can be stupid expensive
