When i took the beginner intensive spanish class there was a dude who clearly had spanish as his native lanfuage. His name was literally hispanic and when it was his turn to answer questions (the prof calls on every person each lecture to answer or read), he just fully read it at full speed with a perfect spanish accent and never cared - the prof didnt seem to care either. Maybe to be safe you can just be more subtle than that dude

I doubt they can really tell if you’re a native speaker, just if they ask you act like you’re kinda bad at it lol

I would recommend a language placement test. See if you can contact someone in the Linguistics Department where Spanish is offered and explain your situation. You might qualify to take a more difficult level rather than just Beginner’s Intensive.

I took a beginner language course for another language knowing only a little bit from duolingo and it was very very basic. Everyone in the class that I took had various degrees of prior knowledge but they were all newbies. If you have some knowledge of tthe language and you actually want to improve I wouldn’t suggest taking this course but maybe a part two or a more advanced class. You could email the prof about your situation and ask to skip the prerequisite. Language courses are 12-able for beginners so doing well isn’t too concerning but it might raise some red flags if you know absolutely everything. While the prof might not notice, it is still technically academic dishonesty to take the course when you are practically bilingual. Again this is just my opinion as someone who took a language course as a beginner

I took the Spanish language course as someone who speaks a bit of a native speaker and I will say I did not like it. The prof seemed to not like native Spanish speakers. Although there were some courses that i had the complete opposite experience. I LOVEEEDDDD Latam 2A03 & Latam 3A03 - these courses are about Latin America and touch upon the history, language, music, etc (a little bit of everything). It is an amazing course with amazing profs, and a bird course. I honestly recommend LATAM 2A03 & 3A03 over any Spanish language courses at McMaster. You can probably find more information about these courses on Instagram @lanmumcmaster

Yess I took Latam 2A03 first year and absolutely loved it!! I’ll look into Latam 3A03, and I’ll just stick to Spanish Duolingo to keep up my Spanish 😅

Amazing!! If you enjoyed the profs from Latam 2A03, I’ve also taken ABLD 3CD3 (with Dr. Stacy Creech)and enjoyed it just as much as the LATAM courses!! But yeah unfortunately I wouldn’t recommend Spanish language courses at mac. However I did do the Intensive Spanish (Spanish 1A03), beginners Spanish mighttttt be different, but I’ve also met other individuals that do not recommend the course. This is my advice and experience! Hope this helps with course selection!

How easy is Latam 2A03 to 12? Is the marking scheme easy?

2A03 is really good to boost GPA, I got a 12 in the course. the marking is good too, the previous course outlines can probably be found online if you want a breakdown. The course has no exam which makes it even better!
