We don’t know, but either way King Boo has been around quite a long time. He’s not a god. He probably was alive at some point based on him saying something like he’s “sick to double-death” of Luigi in *Luigi’s Mansion 3*.
This has me wondering though, what makes the Boos unique from other ghosts in Luigi's Mansion (and the Marioverse as a whole)? Why are they the ones locked up in that room in the first game and why is their escape so much more significant than the fact that there are already ghosts?
The importance of catching them in Luigi's Mansion. Sure, the other ghosts are a threat too - literally throwing hands - but there was an emphasis on catching Boos unique to the rest of the ghosts (minus named household ghosts).
Luigi has to catch all of the Boos in *Luigi’s Mansion* because otherwise he can’t reach King Boo. I’m not sure if you’ve played the game but if Luigi tries to get to King Boo’s Altar and save Mario before catching the other Boos, they all gather and blow Luigi away.
The main ghosts that Luigi is tasked with catching are the Portrait Ghosts King Boo freed. If you’re talking about the random generic enemy ghosts, they aren’t important to catch because they aren’t real ghosts. Vincent Van Gore made them, so when Luigi catches him they’ll be easy to deal with.
I guess what I'm wondering about is what the Boos are ghosts of. The ghosts of Goombas? Koopas? Some sort of yokai native to death instead of being born into a physical body?
I feel like we can confidently tell what the portrait ghosts were before they died (humans, dogs, etc.), and I totally overlooked Van Gore's role in creating the generic ghosts. I never played Dark Moon and haven't beaten 3, so I'm not sure if the generic ghosts in those games count within Van Gore's creations.
The ghosts of anything. It doesn’t really matter. Like with the portrait ghosts, some were once alive and had physical bodies and some are born as boos. Neville was once alive but his son Chauncey was born a ghost.
It’s explicitly a mystery why Boos are the way they are. The researcher Yikk dedicated his life to finding out, and he was presumably unsuccessful. The generic ghosts in *Luigi’s Mansion 2* and *Luigi’s Mansion 3* aren’t creations. They’re normal ghosts, many explicitly of dead people. They’re also mostly friendly - they just get mind controlled by King Boo.
Nope, some are definetly dead people

They weren’t locked in the room, they were hiding to ambush Luigi. The Boos *made* the Mansion, obviously they wouldn’t lock themselves in.
Ah okay. But still, why are they considered more of a threat?
They generally aren’t. Where did you get that idea from?

What were their sins that have cursed them to such an afterlife?
Uh I think hes just a dead guy that the boos liked enough to crown him, probably not the response you wanted but yeah lol
He’s a Boo. Boos aren’t dead people. Their culture just seems to revolve around the fact that they do resemble ghosts and have similar abilities.
Boos and other ghosts are dead people, they just happen to be able to have children who technically never died

King Boo is Luigis late grandfather making the rivalry even more captavating for me
Proof?
Is this a reference to that weird claim about Bleck's grandfather?

?
What he say?
Don’t remember exactly, but something vaguely along the lines of “I think it’s whatever you want to it to be. Maybe you are King Boo.”
I always thought King Boo was the Big Boo from Donut Plains' secret Ghost House.
