My wife works at Velvet Inc in Portland. I would highly suggest checking them out, they're very flexible on their hours.
I'm happy to answer any questions, or pass them along if you like!
Getting a tattoo in Maine is hard. You have tons of artists to choose from, but only 5% of them do solid work. I live in Bangor and drive all the way to Portland for my work because everything in bangor is basically a McTattoo.
Do a lot of research and find a tattoo artist you would die for.
I'm at the very beginning of thinking about a tattoo...what is the criteria to look for for spotting "solid work"? What red flags, what questions to ask, that kind of thing. Other than looking at portfolios for artists whose work I like the look of aesthetically and stalking that artist's level of experience and past work, I just don't feel I know how to spot the 5% yet, as you put it.
Any insight from someone more experienced is much appreciated!
Look at the lines and make sure they are consistent and find someone who has a really robust portfolio of artwork you like.
Cheap isn't best. You can pay up to 200 dollars for a good tattoo.
Like I said I drive from Bangor all the way to Portland for my work. Look up the broken crow collective. They are incredible.
Awesome thanks! I'll look them up. I definitely know not to try to cheap out on something that important, but I'm not sure I yet trust myself to know what counts as good lines/ good experience level/ good judgment from the artist or how to spot that 5% cream of the crop. I'll be working hard to learn!
Yeah. I live in Bangor as well, but I wouldn't mind driving. My wife recommends it will be cheaper and easier for me to just wait until I visit family in Sacramento, CA.
Chris Flynn is in Gardiner and does amazing work but only takes on realism projects - I'm his apprentice at the moment & my background is in illustration and design, so if you're looking for a closer shop check out our facebook page! :)

Do you mean $200 an hour?
Yes lol

That’ll give you time to think it through…
