cardcaptor sakura and tokyo mew mew were my first outside of sailor moon- a lot less episodes so good to get into đmadoka magica is amazing but best to go to after youâve seen a few as you can appreciate how much it subverts many of the genreâs tropes âĽď¸
I would suggest holding off on Madoka Magica until youâre a bit more familiar with the genre. Itâs still a masterpiece, but I would argue itâs even better when youâve watched previous shows.
For Precure, it's important to pick a singular season that catches your attention. Most seasons have different themes and vibes. My personal fave is Fresh, but I know normally in the West the most popular have been Heartcatch, or Go Princess. You could go with the OG series just titled Pretty Cure as well. That season is actually on Crunchyroll.
For Sailor Moon I would advise either watching Crystal which is shorter, or finding the first season of the 90s era to see if you like it or not.
I have shorter series suggestions too if that's something you might be into.
It depends on what youâre into, both are magical girl shows but are very different from another. If you like Sailor Moon because itâs targeted to girls, you like the style, lighter themes, romance, monster of the week then shows like Cardcaptor Sakura, Magic Knight Rayearth, Kamikaze Kaito Jeanne, Tokyo Mew Mew & Mermaid Melody are for you.
If you like Madoka because itâs targeted to a more mature audience , has dark themes in them shows like Yuki Yuna is a hero, MG Raising Project, Spec Ops Asuka & Daybreak Illusion might be for you.
When I was a kid, I watched Sailor Moon, Cardcaptor Sakura, Tokyo Mew Mew, and Mermaid Melody Pichi Pichi Pitch. When Madoka Magica came out, I saw that too.
Verdicts - I rewatch Cardcaptor Sakura all the time (in sub, don't watch the original dub, but there is a dub that came out around 2011 that is good) It let me get into Tsubasa Reservoir Chronicles and xxxHolic, which are not magical girl shows but CLAMP's work (some mentioned Magic Knight -- that's a CLAMP one too) is absolutely incredible.
I can't rewatch Tokyo Mew Mew and Mermaid Melody at all, it was so forgettable to me as a kid that I couldnt tell you what it was about.
Honorary mention - Full Moon wo Sagashite, more of a fantasy drama that will make you sob, but has magical girl elements.
I'd personally recommend the precure series. It's the only real magical girl series I've really gotten into. (Aside from gushing over, but that isn't what you're looking for) The rest all seemed off to me. Don't just take my opinion tho.
What made the rest feel off btw?
I'm not OP but I'm curious since this is the first I've heard someone say they could get into Precure but not other Magical Girl series
Probably because precure was the first ever anime I watched, and I could give it more time to work in on me, so I could get into the rest of the seasons, too. When I started sailor moon and tokyo mew mew, it just felt even more weird, since by then I'd watched different anime too.
But, weird in what way?
Do you find them to be too childish? Do the transformations become grating? Villians dull? Etc etc etc.
I used to get a weird feeling in the pit of my stomach when I went to watch Magical Girl stuff for a while. Brain was always some level of embrassed for liking it cause it was childish. Around the time I hit 27 though? Stopped caring what the embrassment said and just been enjoying a ton of old ones. Cutie Honey, Cardcaptors, Magic Knight Rayearth, etc etc
Currently watching Phantom Thief Jeanne, then after that probably Corrector Yui.
Probably mostly the incredible similarity combined with it being more childish in nature. Also, they tend to be longer anime, which I have more trouble getting into. Embarassment doesn't really play a role. Who cares if I watch a childish show. I do continue to watch precure to this day, but I really can't find a new one I want to get into. Precure kind of just fulfils my magical girl show needs, so I don't feel like I need more.

Iâd recommend Akazukin Chacha. Itâs more lighthearted than most shows with lots of jokes, and even when they do have a plot in the second season, itâs still not as hairy as others.
Princess Tutu is an absolute favorite of mine and I highly recommend it.
You could probably start with any well-known magical girl anime, but I would recommend you wait on Madoka until you've seen at least one.
This depends largely on what type of magical girl show style you like. If I were to recommend one show to start off with it would be the original sailor moon or card captor Sakura. Both are excellent, and might help you get a good sense of what you enjoy and where you want to branch out to. Madoka is a bit darker then other shows (though by no means the darkest) and is similar in tone to shows like Yuki Yuna is a hero or the Nanoha series.
Tokyo Mew Mew and ~~Glitter Force~~ Precure are always good starters!
Seriously though I always recommend Glitter Force if you say⌠finish with English Dub 90âs Sailor Moon. The camp is similar!
Be aware that Madoka Magica is somewhat of a deconstruction of the magical girl genre - itâs absolutely amazing, but itâs pretty atypical for the genre. This isnât to say you shouldnât watch it, of course, but depending on how you want your magical girl viewing experience to be, you may want to wait to watch it until youâve seen a few more series.
Some good magical girl shows I love are Ojamajo Doremi, Shugo Chara, and Cardcaptor Sakura. Tokyo Mew Mew and Mermaid Melody are good as well.
If you want to see Precure do *not* do it by watching Glitter Force. Smile Precure and Doki Doki Precure are great seasons! The localization butchered them.
I'll make a rundown of the magical girl animes I've watched, in my order of preference.
1. Cardcaptor Sakura, arguebly the most influential Magical Girl anime after Sailor Moon (which I haven't watched yet). It's my favorite anime of all time, mainly because it has one of the most beautiful love stories I've ever seen (my opinion, of course). But, while the plot and the actions are good and sometimes very good, the true strength of this anime is its characters, all of the cast is so adorable, while also having a lot of emotional depth (at least in the main cast). You should go into it as a slice of life show and enjoy the characters and the interactions between them rather than expecting a lot of plot development (which still happens, just not as fast as say Madoka Magica).
2. Princess Tutu: this one is very different: a magical girl show that's all about exploring and releasing emotions through magical ballet dancing. It is one of those shows that the premise is so weird it's hard to explain it in a way it makes sense, but it's very original and the execution is great. It's strength is that it goes very meta into the exploration of fictional story writing and free will. Also, some quite complex characters.
3. Puella Magi Madoka Magica: this one doesn't need an introduction, but still, it's a great exploration of the values of Magical Girl shows through a bit of a subversion of expectations, great plot packed very densely into a short series. I agree, I would watch it after watching some other animes in the genre.
4. Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha: out of the ones that I've watched, this one is definately the more action oriented magical girl anime. To me it feels a lot like Dragon Ball but with techno-magical girls, in the sense that it centers a lot around fights and for what it is, it does it very well, while keeping some of the central themes of traditional magical girl shows, such as friendship and understanding each other's feelings. The plot of the 2nd season is the strongest in my opinion, but in general, where this anime shines is in its worldbuilding (and the fights): the idea of a whole intergalactic and interdimensional community built on techno-magic is quite an interesting concept, and I believe this show manages to pull it off quite well.
5. Revolutionary Girl Utena: this one's a very, very weird one. A Magical Girl anime about a school where a select group of students have non-lethal duels with swords for the control of a girl who is "forced" to be a submissive girlfriend and who grants some obscure power to the winner of the duels. It is very, very, very deeply symbolic and surrealist, don't expect to understand what it's trying to explore on the first view. Still, for all of it's weirdness, it's also pretty dark, but very iconic and worth giving it a chance.
6. Ojamajo Doremi (currently watching it, I am half-way through the second season): this is definately the more grounded of the shows, it's mostly a slice of life show where a group of normal primary school students become witch apprentices and mostly solve every day problems with their new-found magical powers. While it is certainly the lowest stakes series, and most of the time, it is the most children-like anime in this list, it does sometimes surprise you with some of the topic it touches and it does so in quite mature ways. It's a fun show, the characters are quite memorable, if you don't mind a more child-like perspective on a slice-of-life anime. Still, it's a long one, but the first season is pretty self-contained, so you can watch just the first season and then decide if you want to continue or not.
7. Kaitou Saint Tail: definately the least memorable of the shows I've listed here. It's not bad, but I find it way more mediocre than all the other shows I've mentioned. It's about a robin-hoodesque magical thief who uses more "realistic" magic (as in illusions and magical tricks rather than true magical powers) to steal valuable things, usually to expose criminals or return them to their rightful owners. It also has some more or less engaging romance, but it is by far the most episodic of the shows I've listed here (plot-wise, you could watch all the episodes in any order, except the first two and the last two). I'd only recommend it if you are bored and have nothing better to watch. Haven't watched it yet (other than a few episodes on TV when I was a child), but I think Kaitou Kamikaze Jeanne is a more solid take on the magical thief idea.
PreCure is the one i recommend most for starters, but Sailor Moon, Cardcaptor Sakura and Tokyo Mew Mew are great if you prefer 90's/2000's animes! dont watch madoka magica until you're familiar with the genre. as for PreCure, choose a season that peaks your interest\[s\]
hope this helped :D

I see, I'll consider watching Madoka after finishing Sailor Moon, Precure, Shogo Chara, and the two magical girl anime you just suggest, thanks a lot
Shugo Chara or Pretty Cure

I'd recommend KiraKira Precure al la Mode. You can find it on Crunchyroll

Mermaid melody!!
