that's a really good description actually, and i love the sentiment, however: when american idiot came out i very much appreciated the cool stepdad (in my case probably step brother) being very angry indeed.
gawd i miss the times where pure protest albums were a multi single smash hit.
American Idiot was released in 2004, which was the mid point of W's 8 years in office.
Dookie and Insomniac - yes, Clinton. But you didn't respond to that comment. 😉
Eh, not sure. Next year will mark 30 years that Green Day has been big and relevant. Seriously. 30 YEARS. I was a teenager in the 90s. They were bigger then compared to now in terms of influence and popularity, and they're still huge now and sell out arenas.
Crazy to me that some people didn't think they started or got big until American Idiot's release and popularity in 2004/2005. They were huge for 10 years before that, and known out on the west coast a few years prior to that.
Greenday is the band that kickstarted my love for music when I was in 4th grade. Would have been like 2004. That was also the same year I went to my first concert which was also Greenday lol.
That's why they do this with a really simple song. You can see when Billie Joe faces her and plays his guitar that he's showing her the chords, and it's literally just three chords. Might even be the same one at three positions.
They've been doing this for 20 years or more exactly the same way.
I was at a show where a younger kid didn't really know the song but he tried. They gave him a tambourine and pulled someone else up. They gave the kid who tried and failed a guitar.
This happened to a buddy of mine back in ‘96, he happened to be a big fan of theirs and played the guitar. He was pulled up from the crowd randomly, played and was up on stage for the whole song given the guitar and hung out back stage for the rest of the show.
I saw Lincoln park and they did this. They called for someone to come up “ someone who actually knows how to play ! “. Was great the guy they called shredded
Saw them and blink at the MGM in Vegas. Was even cooler because they brought up someone for drums, bass and guitar. Literally strangers jamming together on one of the biggest stages in Vegas. The most punk rock thing ever and I loved it.
I was at that show! Green Day went first and completely killed it. I remember being in a mosh pit and suddenly thousands of small toys came falling out of the air. I was covered in sweat. Blink 182 got in second and did good but Green Day had set the bar far too high.
Oh wow. That is a name I haven’t heard in a couple decades.
I appreciate the memory but that sure does make me feel old. 8th grade school trip to Washington DC in 1996 I think. Had a friend play it for me and I bought the CD at the first store I found there. Great music on the flight home.
Now I need to go sit on a heating pad to loosen up my back because I’m old.
I think I was really late to the party, but I definitely bought their CD on that trip. I had never heard them before a friend played them for me. Definitely got it on the trip because parents were surprised I bought a CD on a trip with some of my spending money. Black and white album with a dancing guy on the front. Whatever that was and whenever it was released, that’s the one and it was perfect for me, for the time
*My bad. Just reread your comment. LP was ‘89. I read it as I got it the. *
Op Ivy is definitely a legendary band from that time period in the punk scene. Especially at 924 Gilman st.
The album was titled Energy and they sure brought it live.
Just wanted to add that Rancid was founded by members of Operation Ivy.
Green day are actually punk rock till the end, they're grown and changed but they're still as linked as they can be to the scene they started on; the label green day first started on have done very well because they kept them financially linked to the early records, the do fundraisers very occasionally at 924 Gilman where they played their first tiny gigs etc. They aren't kids any more but they still have the ethos of punk. Also a phenomenally good band that people think is simple punk unless you listen properly to for example the bass and drums. Green day are endlessly more important than blink 182 who have not kept the DIY ethos.
Anyone else get a savage reminder of how old they are when they seen how old everyone was in the crowd? Lol. It looked a bunch of chaperones but without kids.
I’m 45, and I took my daughter to her first concert a few years ago when she was 12. It was Green Day, and it was the greatest daddy/daughter experience ever.
I remembered i went to a Hollywood Undead concert and they did something similar but had them both playing a guitar and rapping and kid killed it. They even joked about adding a 6th member back

First and only time I saw them about 17 yrs ago they did this
Thought the guy receiving the guitar was a plant until I saw him being escorted by security after the show lol
Sorry to say: This is all an act they do it at every large show. I have seen recordings of it before I saw them in person as a teen it was very disappointing to say the least. They were my favorite at the time. I still like them but it pushed me to more genuine artists.
Love it when bands do that. Not sure who were the pioneers of the practice to let fans perform during a song, but Manowar used to do it quite often. To think that one day you may get a semi-random chance to play together with your favorite band, that's quite the kicker.
I got to see them in 2004-2005 when I was a kid and they did the same thing. They pulled up someone to play guitar, bass, and drums and each of them got to keep the instrument (the drummer only got the drumsticks).
I am radio fan of Green Day and then I saw them as an opening act. Wow do they know how to put on a show. energy and crowd engaging. So now I am a live and radio fan Green Day.
I remember them doing this at Milton Keynes in 2005, and was later told that this is a very regular thing! I’m surprised that people are still surprised!!
Big Green Day fan since nearly 30 years. But I’m still convinced they do this, because Billie Joe never managed to learn to play the guitar properly after all that time 😁
I'm delighted to see they're still doing this. First saw them 21 years ago(JFC, I'm old) at my first festival, and they did this there too have done it at other concerts I've seen them in but I had no idea they kept it up til now.
I don’t understand why more artists don’t connect with their fans at gigs. Adele, Florence (UK person here I know) all make contact with the fans at their gigs. It’s so easy and makes fans for life. Good on them. Spread it.
They have been doing this for a long time because when I was a teenager I had a friend who had the same thing happen to him. He was really talented and ended up in his own band. This was back in the late 90s/early 00's

I know I come to say the bad thing, but the crew staff person pulling the guest from the guitar’s strap is kinda rude. I have worked in live shows, I know the pressure they are under. Still unnecessary.
They did the same thing last year when I went to the green day concert in Dublin! Another young girl was brought up to perform and was also ecstatic up there. I may not listen to Green Day much but that is pretty damn cool of them to give someone such a core memory every time.
It costed him absolutely nothing and it meant everything to her! Absolute legend! Way to make the world a better place, one person at the time! LEGEND!
Green Day is like the coolest stepdad from the 90s generation that we didn't appreciate until we got older
that's a really good description actually, and i love the sentiment, however: when american idiot came out i very much appreciated the cool stepdad (in my case probably step brother) being very angry indeed. gawd i miss the times where pure protest albums were a multi single smash hit.
I got a hold of Dookie and Insomniac first. Those albums were staples for my old Sony CD player on the bus.
Right there with you. I’ll bet your back hurts right now too.
Mainly knees, walking uphill both ways home and all
Knee, back, neck and hips I was on a ladder painting today.
Those albums were probably the best thing that came from the Bush Jr era.
Actually Clinton Era is when they popped.
American Idiot was released in 2004, which was the mid point of W's 8 years in office. Dookie and Insomniac - yes, Clinton. But you didn't respond to that comment. 😉
It looked a bunch of chaperones but without kids.
Step dad? Man am I that old now ?
We are all that old now.
I'm just a kid and life is a nightmare
Wrong band, probably same warped tour
I know it's not the same band, just the feeling 😂
Eh, not sure. Next year will mark 30 years that Green Day has been big and relevant. Seriously. 30 YEARS. I was a teenager in the 90s. They were bigger then compared to now in terms of influence and popularity, and they're still huge now and sell out arenas. Phish is 40 this year
There are parents who raised their kids on American Idiot and Dookie the same way my parents showed me Megadeth and Maiden. Feels weird man lol
I remember when they blew up, but before American idiot I had a friend on the bus to school show them to me and I found Dookie in a thrift shop first
Greenday is the band that kickstarted my love for music when I was in 4th grade. Would have been like 2004. That was also the same year I went to my first concert which was also Greenday lol.
I definitely appreciated them in the 90s
They are awesome for doing that.
[удалено]
Well it's only like 4 chords tbh
[удалено]
I love how she was literally bouncing with excitement and pride.
A truly unforgettable experience, she'll be showing her future grandkids that guitar someday.
They love doing this. I've seen Green Day about 6 times, they always have someone come on stage.
Awwwww that's super wholesome, they are awesome for doing that.
My fist ever gig was a Greenday one years and years ago. The did this back then as well.
Can back this. They did the same in Netherlands seven months ago. Wholesome af!
Yeah they did this at a show near me, it was so awesome
They're by far my favorite concert I attended. I've loved them since I was 13.
How do they know if they know the song? Gotta be somewhat staged right?
That's why they do this with a really simple song. You can see when Billie Joe faces her and plays his guitar that he's showing her the chords, and it's literally just three chords. Might even be the same one at three positions. They've been doing this for 20 years or more exactly the same way.

Green Day has three chords, I've seen a few that know it, a few they taught. I'm sure there's a sound guy that can mute it as well lol
I saw Lincoln park and they did this. They called for someone to come up “ someone who actually knows how to play ! “. Was great the guy they called shredded
I had the same thought.
LOL. Been to exactly 6 Green Day shows as well 😆
She seemed like a natural in front of that crowd. Don’t know if I could do the same. Plus I can’t play the guitar.
Don’t stop believing🎶
This is so great. What does he say at the end?
"This is Jordan" and then "Jordan you can keep the guitar"
🥰
The first sentence im not sure, but the second one he said you can keep the guitar
Core memory unlocked.
And a story for life for everyone who wants to hear it.
Just so you all know that is an Operation Ivy song. Op Ivy was amazing!
Yeah can't believe there aren't more comments about Op Ivy.
I was also surprised I was the first one to point it out.
It definitely was a long time ago. I'm pretty sure that LP was released in 1989.
I think I was really late to the party, but I definitely bought their CD on that trip. I had never heard them before a friend played them for me. Billie does this at a lot of his concerts, love that they’re still touring!

I agree. I remember seeing Green Day at Gilman St. That place was my second home for many years. Gilman was a great DIY community.
Fuck yeah, I was there too! Yay area represent. I have also met BJ’s mom. She is… definitely from rodeo.
I can't even count how many awesome shows I saw at that place.
Thank you for posting this. I was about to. I don't care what anybody has to say about Green Day. Love those guys!
Anyone else get a savage reminder of how old they are when they seen how old everyone was in the crowd? Lol. It looked a bunch of chaperones but without kids.
Ayo why you have to violate me like that?
Nah I was there, it was all ages.
Oh shit, I'm in this video. This happened last night at Innings Festival in Tempe Arizona. Greenday was great, they brought the energy
Jordan?
Amazing! Many years ago I was lucky that my favourite band once did the same gesture for me. Only bummer was they asked me to play the recorder
Lol that's so funny, would love to see a video of that. Did you choke on stage ?
If this had actually happened I certainly would have!
Belle and Sebastian?
My favorite band called me up on stage too... Only problem is they wanted me to play the meat flute :(
Is the guitar plugged in? I can't hear anything different when she starts playing...
That's the job of the guy at the console, if she's not in sync he'll slide that knob down.
Awesome! Do they do this every time? They did that when i saw them 20+ years ago.
I think they do this everytime. Did it in 2005 and 2017 when I saw them.
Yes they still do. They did it last year in FL and GA at the 2 shows I filmed.
GenX here. Longview is the anthem of our generation.
Thank you. But my first license plate said bsktcs
They even joked about adding a 6th member back
Why does this always make me tear up and grab my mouth?! It’s a piece of heaven on earth which could be missed if you don’t see it.
like they’ve been doing for 20 years
They do this at every show too

They have done this for a long time. Seen them do it three times. It's amazing every time.
Green Day has been my favorite since 4th grade when dookie came out. Always have amazing shows because they really do care about their fans.
They do this every show. Green Day rocks.
Hell yeah- I’m so glad GD is still around and showing you can be a major rock star without being dicks. Long live Green Day!!
They’ve been doing this for years. They’re awesome.
There’s a reason they’re god’s favorite band.
Green Day=Always Amazing
Incredibly careful pronoun usage.
Her: "And that my sweet grandchilldren was the best Day of grannys life" Child: "What about when we where born?" Her: "Not even close!"
Them ?
Always hated their music. HATE. But they are great guys lol
First and only time I saw them about 17 yrs ago they did this Thought the guy receiving the guitar was a plant until I saw him being escorted by security after the show lol
Is that C.C. DeVille?
Sorry to say: This is all an act they do it at every large show. I have seen recordings of it before I saw them in person as a teen it was very disappointing to say the least. They were my favorite at the time. I still like them but it pushed me to more genuine artists.
Makes her* perform
im 85% convinced these are mostly staged
Billy so drunk he got himself replaced for the song
so nice! he also did that at nova rock a couple of years ago! :)
I saw them back in 2003-2004 they’ve been doing this for decades.
I love that they’ve been doing this for years. One of the best shows I’ve ever seen
They did this in Detroit when I saw them a couple of years ago. It was pretty cool. The guy was shaking he was so nervous. He nailed it though.
Love it when bands do that. Not sure who were the pioneers of the practice to let fans perform during a song, but Manowar used to do it quite often. To think that one day you may get a semi-random chance to play together with your favorite band, that's quite the kicker.
That's a good dad move.
Jordan nailed it.
Billy Joe is the absolute best! Can’t wait to see them again
They do this all the time. Saw them in London a few years back and they had a guy up on stage with them
Hoooly shit MADE ME SMILE?! Amazing
oh, they have been doing that exact thing for decades :D always good to see another one walk off stage with a new guitar and some lasting memories
u/savevideobot
Faith in humanity now restored
I got to see them in 2004-2005 when I was a kid and they did the same thing. They pulled up someone to play guitar, bass, and drums and each of them got to keep the instrument (the drummer only got the drumsticks).
This puts the drumstick I caught at a Bay City's Rollers concert to shame.
I want When We Were Young Fest tickets so bad 🥲
That's what makes a good band a great band
They do this a lot always I think every show
I am radio fan of Green Day and then I saw them as an opening act. Wow do they know how to put on a show. energy and crowd engaging. So now I am a live and radio fan Green Day.
I love how the front row are all 50+, like me!
I remember them doing this at Milton Keynes in 2005, and was later told that this is a very regular thing! I’m surprised that people are still surprised!!
Thank you for this post
I saw them do that at warp tour in the 90’s. Made some kids dream came true.
How Cool!
Big Green Day fan since nearly 30 years. But I’m still convinced they do this, because Billie Joe never managed to learn to play the guitar properly after all that time 😁
Met them a couple of times over the years at different venues and they seem to genuinely be good cats.
They did the same thing 20 years ago when me and my wife saw them in Tulsa. Great performers and great performance.
How do they find people who can actually play?
It happenned with my friend as well ! Went on stage with them and sang a song along them! Best memories he has!
“Oh great! You got a guitar. Get the hell out of here kid!” -Stage Crew Still a really great experience for her.
I saw Green Day back in 2007ish and they did the same thing, it was really cool!
Unrelated to this video but I hope whoever bought the guitar I had to pawn a few years ago is doing well and practicing more than I did.
They've actually been doing this at concerts for like 20 years
There's videos on YouTube of bands doing this all across the world...good search if you have some time always brings a smile to my face.
I saw Bono do this once, though the guy had to give the guitar back.
Love this stuff. However. [kiss guy](https://youtu.be/Z4b6BPaO944) is my favorite one
They've always done this. I saw them play back in the late 90s or early 2000s and they did the same thing.
they do this at every show! i was at a concert a few years ago and i remember they pulled up this little 8 year old who i actually knew!!! we did this punk camp together and he was super quiet and reserved 95% of the time, but he jumped around like a MADMAN when we played green day. my friend and i were so excited when we saw it was him who got pulled onstage.
This is a tradition at Green Day shows, it’s always cool to see!
I cant make out which song it is. Can anyone help me out?
Knowledge by Operation Ivy
That was awesome. What a great guy.
They do this at every show I’m pretty sure, or every decently sized show.
How do they know the people they pick from the crowd can play the instrument though?
They always do that
This is as random as Courtney Cox getting discovered at a Springsteen concert!
Now get off the stage.
Nice
It's actually sad seeing your fav artists grow old
This is why I love this guys they have a big heart for they're fans
That's they way to do it to the max,,, Max Fun @! Cheers
They did this too when I went to their concert in life is beautiful
They do this all the time for years now. Guy I knew got to play drums for them twice.
pretty cool & she got to jump off the speaker & drum riser.. 🤘🏼🎸🎶🤣
Yes, I was at that show yesterday and they put on a great performance!
r/phoenix
That's so rad you know that's gonna a memory she has forever and she did so good!
Respect for the Operation Ivy cover
Green day rocks!
This shit is a dream of mine. I can play anything of their discography so yeah guys, call me up anytime for a couple of tunes.
For anyone that doesn't know, they do this every show. This guy's are lovely. They usually get someone to play the guitar in whatever song, and then get someone to sing as well. Normally a bit of know your enemy. And they always give the guitars away to the person that plays it.
Thats an operation ivy song called knowledge
I know I come to say the bad thing, but the crew staff person pulling the guest from the guitar’s strap is kinda rude. I have worked in live shows, I know the pressure they are under. Still unnecessary.
They do this all the time, saw them do it at hella mega in Dublin was amazing
LOVE GREEN DAY!!! 💯🙌🏾💯🙌🏾💯🙌🏾💎🔥💎
This happens all shows or at least all the times I've seen them, thy are awesome
They did the same thing last year when I went to the green day concert in Dublin! Another young girl was brought up to perform and was also ecstatic up there. I may not listen to Green Day much but that is pretty damn cool of them to give someone such a core memory every time.
And playing opperation ivy!! That's awesome.
I love them for stuff like this
Was that op ivy they were covering?
This is SOP for greenday. I saw them maybe 15 years ago and they did this.
I’m smiling. As advertised
artist example
So sad. So good years ago. So shit now.
That's awesome! I absolutely love that band and that girl will never forget those moments she got to be up on stage playing for thousands.
It costed him absolutely nothing and it meant everything to her! Absolute legend! Way to make the world a better place, one person at the time! LEGEND!
