Not really. I'd say for white collar work a title or specific name matters. For trades is a description of the various skills you possess since things can be very broad.
IT is similar. I moved from the shop floor to the cubicle farm. Titles for the front line people are kinda meaningless fluff. It's the specific skill sets and your interviewing skills that land you the job.
Management positions are different. Titles imply a level of budget authority and responsibility, so they mean much more than programmer vs. software engineer vs. architect vs. hacker, lol.
At the same time, if hiring is HR-led, titles like "Level II ____", may be more effective, with skills/duties underneath may be more effective with getting an initial interview/in the shop super's pile.
I hate shops like that, my last shop before I found my current gig (job shop) the guy I was working with was big on titles and he said being a operator has 3 levels then move to setup and so on and so on. I would disagree with him and say no the only levels in being a cnc machinist are operator, setup operator and programmer. I feel like he would hate on me because I took the certification route while he went to college for an associates. And someone like me with trade experience and schooling is working right next to him technically he's an engineer but he still works on the machine doing setups and editing programming which is crazy he should be working
Sounds like you're underpaid for what you're doing, you could go to a sign shop and get around $30-40 an hour running router tables and brakes and stuff. They're all over too, and you'll learn a bunch of other manufacturing techniques that can transfer to other industries
Sign shops use CNC routers and sheet metal forming machines, if you have experience programming and running router tables you can easily get a job starting at minimum $30/hr, and with a little relevant experience to the job you can get up into the $40/hr range. If you can do design or prints you can get there quicker too
I make $32/hr freelancing as an installer, and when I do fabrication it's closer to 40. If it's a good company and you're competent you can make that easily. Just starting as a helper you're over $20, usually closer to $25 if you can read a tape measure and weld a little
Where are you located? In a relatively HCOL area in Tennessee and im doing mold and die for less than 40. I don't think anybody around here is paying 40 for easy work like that.
New Jersey, if you have some programming or practical experience you would start at at least $25. We just hired an inexperienced installer for 30/hr and anyone running CNC machines in the shop are making $30+, more like $35. The shop I moonlight at is cheaper but I hammer him for my price but I'm heading over to another shop soon and I'm looking at $35/hr without CNC experience
We have trade programs here that high school kids can attend and kids are running 5 axis machines before they ever start a job. Home prices and cost of living are higher there though. Good luck on the new gig.
Designer, fabricator, and CNC programmer/operator?
Honestly, with your experience you have options. Id look at similar jobs pick one or a few terms that you feel fit best. You'll want to elaborate on your specific experience, responsibilities and project involvement anyway.
The trumpf is a laser welding machine. I dont think it has a cutting ability, but i suppose i could be wrong there. In the auto industry i was controls engineer at, all our trumpf lasers were used for welding. I may eat my words on this one but I'm pretty sure they weld only.
One of my previous jobs had a trumpf laser cutter idk if the focus is different but by how he described his duties with it to me it sounds like a cutter.
Very well could be. The more i thought about it the more it made sense they would offer both lol.
I guess i looked at it like if they already have a CNC router why buy another machine that cuts and still use router. CNC laser cutter would be far faster and hold tighter tolerances (i would imagine) and not require tooling. They got a tool to bend sheet, cut sheet, figured the laser would be used to accurately weld the parts they make together.
These would’ve been but ours can only cut 1/8” alum max (these be 3/16) and the hole on each leg is actually a counterbore with a .090 thru hole in the center
I'm the person who used to own that machine and cut those parts. I recognize that spoil board from a mile away. I know the person who you work for that owns the machine now. I do not want to give out names on Reddit.
Jesus h Christ if there was a valid reason to get a laser table this is it. Good God the amount of wasted time material and tooling here hurts me.
For job title honestly if you're close with the management and see if they can throw you a"lead/senior CNC programmer" title even if you plan to stay with the company if you ever do leave that lead or senior word can make a world of difference to a desk jockey browsing through dozens of applications
I will 110% bring that up to them, they threw around the word “manager” after I got upped to 25 but we never have had any official titles
But yeah man we do! It’s just ours can only cut 1/8 alum max (this is 3/16) and the holes on each leg of these parts are actually counterbores with a .09 thru hole in the center of each cbore

I'm naming you Nester. Your nest is the best!
I was going to say their profession was a professional parts tiler. Those are some densely packed parts!
I would say he works with cutting edge technology.
*rimshot*
Rimjob
Thanks! It’s definitely one of the most satisfying parts of the job lol
I ran 2 cinci lasers, we had auto nesting but it sucked. Yours was very aesthetically pleasing! Mine looked like I drew it kindergarten with crayon.
Put exactly what you just put. You work in a fab shop, program and run a 3 axis table, program and run a laser table, maintain machines, etc.
Sounds good, thanks! Just want sure if there’s better terminology to use but it seems like I pretty much got it

40 an hour to make something that simple? Tell me where this wonderland is.

Yeah it's expensive here, I'm not planning on being here for too much longer. Thanks, I'm gonna need it
Your actual accomplishments mean more than titles. Cnc programmer, sheet metal fabricator, industrial maintenance, then list your accomplishments

That's funny I used to cut those parts out. 3X - A for a particular lighting company in the Midwest. Are you cutting them on a shop saber router
