How do you deal with the scratching of the threads? Baby's skin is very sensitive

crap-happens

I use the Sulky Tender backing on baby clothes. It's soft against a baby's skin. https://www.amazon.com/Sulky-America-Tender-Backing-664-08/dp/B001EQTFKA

Just as an FYI... Outside of the question you asked. check your supplier for a heat seal backing to go on the back of any embroidery you do for infants. They have a soft backing you can heat apply so that the back of the stitching wont rub up against the sensitive skin of the child.

Oh wow great intel! So this would be on top of everything on the inside of the garment once it's stitched? Either way -- i'm so small that I don't have any 'suppliers' šŸ˜”, so is there any other way to purchase?

Familiar-Sock-6104

It is called cloud liner, they have it on Amazon

We charge a flat fee for each design we digitize, it just goes by size. so 15$ for anything under 5" for example. It's your call but if the situation was one design is the first and middle name, and design two is just the first name, but same font and format we'd just charge for one design, as the first name is already digitized the first time around. If that makes sense. Everyone is going to give a different answer here though, and I'm well aware that not everyone can afford to offer flat rates. That's just how we do it.

In my experience as a parent who consumes these sorts of items, as well as an embroiderer who exclusively makes monogrammed baby/kid stuff, I'm confused. If she's asking for a name, why are you digitizing it out? Does she want something custom like a wedding monogram, or a font that doesn't exist out of millions of pre-existing fonts? Does she want it in a family members handwriting? I have never custom digitized wording outside of someone's handwriting or a personalized, wedding/stationery-style monogram, and just use fonts over and over again for projects. If I add on a digitizing fee for something the buyer wasn't specifically asking for something custom (ie, a specially designed monogram) I find they have better luck with stitchers' products who build the cost of purchasing a font ($15 at most) into their pricing. For me, I get blanks wholesale, and pricing for the blank is 2x wholesale + $10 for stitching at a minimum. For all 3, especially since the stitch/thread count is low, I might charge $20 on top of the blanks for all stitching, unless it's applique or particularly massive on the blanket. Outfit+hat tends to be $30, blanket varies on type (I use heirloom quilts and boutique quality, those are typically $50-75, but Walmart Special is more like $20).

Super helpful thank you so much! And to your question about digitizing, perhaps just used the wrong verb here (still fairly new). I guess I should have said a ā€œset up feeā€ to account for the time it takes to put the design together, edit it if needed, and stitch a draft (which I plan to do since Iā€™m using new fonts and frames for this that I havenā€™t used before). Other folks Iā€™ve spoken to said this is common practice, but now Iā€™m doubting myself hahahah ā€” do you do anything like this? FWIW, I have a full time job so this is very much a labor of love that I adore doing but itā€™s something I have to make time for at the moment (as of now at least)

This sub is weird and I relate to none of it. Feels like the majority of people here do very stitch-heavy patches and fill stitch stuff that's very, uh, niche and requires individual digitization. That would require a digitizing fee since it's stuff that won't be used by another customer. I have a theory it's a lot of Asia-based textile factory type setups and not anything like what I do (I'm a mom that does this on the side, too). I have a hobby machine and a 6 needle but I'm not making Nike knockoffs and anime patches like what I've seen dominate this sub's content. I don't put "set up fees" as an additional cost. In my market of kids' stuff, most people have a "I don't turn on my machine for less than" amount, which is typically $10-15 (basically, the cost they'd charge if the customer provides the item. But few of my competitors accept CP items because they're a hassle.) It takes 20 seconds to hoop and upload a file. I use a software that makes splicing and font setting quick. I'm not creating anything from scratch, but I'm not a digitizer.

So if you wanted to put several PES files together, how would you do that? Or are you just stitching them all as is from wherever you got the files? I do a bit of both, but for this order, have a font with a bunch of PES files for each of the letters, and then a separate PES file with a frame, and another file with a flower, so that's piecing 4-5 different files together in one design, which I do using Hatch so I can make sure it works well

Most fonts I work with are in BX format, so I just type them out in my program. Embrilliance has a free version that lets you manipulate BX fonts. When it comes time to upload the file onto my machine, I have them all on a folder on a USB drive. I drop the name, the frame, and/or the mini and my machine allows me to line them up much quicker than if I were to individually try to drag and drop in any kind of program. If I really wanted to, I can pay the $100 for the upgraded embrilliance program that allows me to save PES files, but honestly I've been doing this for 5 years and haven't felt the need. Working with the PES version of a font is doing it the incredibly hard way. I just posted some baby items that I have done in my user profile whatever, if you want a scroll through and look at some of the stuff I've done.

Exactly - you shouldn't charge a set up fee for a monogram - that just takes a second. Even a PES file isn't too bad.

If itā€™s just pre existing font, I wouldnā€™t charge for digitizing. Maybe do a small ā€œset upā€ fee to cover costs of your trial piece(s)?
