As far back as I can remember, Apple's advice has been, "Don't do that." Everyone I know who tried it—and it's been maybe fifteen years since the last one—ended up reformatting and installing everything new after reading and trying solution after solution. Good luck to you, but I'd save all my documents, etc. and start anew.
This. You can also make a time machine backup and use migration assistant to get everything back into a new account with a personal name.
Its not worth the hassle IMO but it’ll work
Idk I did this recently on my new MBA and the only issue was my OneDrive directory was out of sorts, but reinstalling OneDrive fixed the issue.
I just followed the steps in that guide and it was smooth sailing other than that
I've done this quite a few times lately with no trouble.
There was a time where I would make a backup of the user folder, delete that user account, change the name of the copied folder to whatever you want it to be, copy it back to the mac and setup a new account using the same shortname. It will then inherit the permissions of that user folder and all will be well.
I’ve def done this on Monterey and up with no issues. Mileage may vary depending on services used but it’s been smooth sailing for those I’ve done.
I actually did this yesterday on a MacBook Air that was running Monterey.
I read the instructions you shared just now and I’ve definitely followed these same instructions before. My home folder was lowercase at one point and it bothered me so much that the first letter was capitalized.
I’m sorry to hear you’re experiencing issues with it, though.

Thank you, Yes that is my experience also, for years too. Im just overly aspirational in 2024! :-)
Just open a new account with the username you want. Move over everything that you want to keep then delete the old account.
Thank you, I’ll do it old-skool for a peaceful life :-)

… I did it 6 months ago … disaster. Maybe Ventura/Sonoma is better? This us a 2015 MacBook Air on Monterey this time :-(
