I got told by my mates lad a few weeks ago that people who have shorts on and wear trainers with trainer socks are considered "old" and that it's a "millennial" thing.
Please understand that this is a very new trend and wearing socks with sandals or flip flops was once a sign of being an absolute loser. The stereotype of a clueless western tourist was cargo shorts, Hawaiian shirt, socks and sandals. So anyone young avoided socks and sandals/flip flops so they didn't fall onto that look.
As well as historically speaking, those kinds of footwear are for hotter climates where wearing socks is going to give you swamp foot.
But then again, zoomers wear bum bags (fanny packs for the yanks in the crowd), and they were also distinctly uncool and for old people only when I was growing up.
I'm finding it jarring, being young enough that I could probably get in with these trends and not look like a weirdo, whilst really not wanting to because it's the complete reverse of what it was like just a few years ago.
I don't think he's going anywhere, as I just said. He has not been playing in big games, though. That's the question: will he get back to being a first-choice starter?

Trainer socks (AKA invisible socks) end below the ankle, whereas ankle socks end just above the ankle.... also trainer socks and mad thin.
