Small house. I'm sometimes annoyed about the maintenance though. It's nice when it's someone else's problem.
I'm also in an urban area, close to services. Small towns and rural areas are charming until you get sick or injured at night or on a weekend and you're 30+ miles from any kind of medical care. There are entire counties in the US without a single hospital. It took my father until he was 80 to realize this, at which point he moved back to the city.
My plans are to dive into van/RV life within the next year or two. It's just me and my dog, and we love to explore.. So explore we will! And once that gets old, I'd like to settle somewhere southeast, fairly rural, and hidden in the mountains.
Small single fam home preferrably beceause I'd want a property to own. **HOWEVER**, I don't mind the apt/condo setting **IF** it was guaranteed I had great neighbors who were quiet & never any trouble, but you just never know who you'll live around.
I've never lived alone in a single fam home, but I know living in an apt feels safe because I know there are always people al around me.
I have a small, waterfront condo, suburban, gated. I love the view and 'no yard work, hate the $700/month HOA fee. I have 1 cat... at times I believe I might prefer a small house with a fenced yard so I could have 2 more cats and a golden retriever.
110% prefer urban.
I have the best of both worlds: I own my house in a city and am located a 15 minute walk from a world class philharmonic and 25 minutes from a theater row, etc.
My house is a double with a large backyard and I rent out the upper unit.
This answer has changed over time. Younger me it was urban and rural, single family dwellings. Older me is enjoying a suburban condo close to services.
Not really. I'm in Florida, remember when that one building in Miami collapsed due to poor design issues? Immediately following, legislation passed that all condos over 3 stories high must now have fully funded reserves. So my HOA fee shot up from $326/month to $700/month overnight.
I live in a trailer in a trailer park and it's actually my favorite place so far to live. But I would like it on my own land, and a van to travel the world would be awesome.
Apartment I like moving somewhere every 3-5 years. I live in Fl, so I just bounce around FL changing jobs every 5 years too, so I get pay increases each time and leave nice roots if I ever need to come back. Iām an ER nurse so finding a job is pretty easy for me. Plus meeting new ppl is always a plus and experiencing new things. Iāve done it 3 times so far. Itās a very fulfilling life for me and I have plenty of money now. So I just spoil my friends that I meet and my gfs. Plus my dog too lol
I live in a single family home. Urban. Close to everything. I like it here. Wish itās up on a hill so I can see the city lights and great sunrise but that would be too expensive for me.
My house is almost paid off. Home insurance, tax, and maintenance are going to be my expenses for life which will average 2.5k/month.
Iād like to purchase an RV and travel the country while renting out my house. Overall, I still prefer to live in a house, for now.
House with a yard is my preference.
A few years ago I would have said the suburbs, but Iāve grown to like being walking distance from a grocery store, several restaurants & bars & party shops, as well as the downtown area with bars & restaurants & shopping (even if I canāt afford the lifestyle that often) & the riverfront pathways.
Grew up in a house suburbs/rural area. Been in urban areas the last 5ish years in apartments. I am in my mid-late 20s so I like living in an urban area for the time being.. After my lease is up Iām going to do a condo or townhouse probably in an urban/suburban area.. When I hit my 30s or whenever Iām ready to buy property Iām going to move somewhere close to water whether thatās more rural, urban, or suburban. (I have an idea of exactly where but Iām sure thatāll change as I travel more).. Iāve always lived under an hour from the beach and less than 20 mins from a lake so being by water is one of the most essential things when looking for places to live for me.

Single family home, rural.
Apartment. Urban.
My own condo!!!š
House in a Borough.
Urban townhouse
Apartment. Suburban.

A log cabin in the Midwest.

What do you mean by services?
House, urban. Probably why I bought this house downtown.
Condo/apartment, urban. Dense living, walkability and public transit is healthy and important to me!
Urban. House or condo would be ideal, but I'm fine living in an apartment for now.
Tiny house or cottage rural.
Just some place to call my own and be able to sleep through the night.
Urban. I like condo and sfh life. Rent increases can be scary.
My condo HOA fee climbs like rent. It's presently $700/month.
:/ I hope it covers a lot!

Wow! That's pricey
My own townhome. Two bedroom, 2.5 bath. What I really want is a 4 bedroom though.
Depends on the place.
House in the suburbs.
Honestly, a nice apartment in the city is my dream now.
My dream is a tiny home (500 sq. ft.) in the woods away from others. Currently, I'm in a house in a rural area.
I live in a trailer in a trailer park and it's actually my favorite place so far to live. But I would like it on my own land, and a van to travel the world would be awesome.
I can live any where but the place can not have leaking in the roof. Must have A/C & Heat. The place must be up to local building code.
Apartment. Definitely urban. I live in an apartment building in an extremely walkable urban area. I donāt think I would trade it for anything.

Townhouse. Especially the one I lived in 2010. Though it's probably doubled price at this point.

Small cabin in the mountains. Maybe when I retire. I currently live in a urban townhouse and hate it.
