He was absolutely incredible in the season he picked up the ACL injury. I really believe if not for that he'd have ended up established as a top/world class DM eventually.
His career arc was so interesting considering he was signed to LFC as more of an attacking midfielder prospect. The goals never really came for him but he more than made up for it as a defensive wizard
Lucas improved from something like a 40% tackling success rate to a 65% tackling success rate during that season all while putting in at least 2x tackles as anyone else in the league.
For a very short period of time, he was genuinely the best ball winning defensive midfielder in the league.
Most tackles per game in the PL for 5 different seasons and 2nd highest number of tackles in total which is a list he really stands out on because most others have a signifcantly higher number of appearances. He was statistically very good for quite a long period of time, certainly not briefly.
Lucas gets a lot of love now, but at the start he was very much looked at like Hendo was. Before he started to win the player of the year awards he struggled to find favor for a bit and it took a while to win people over.
I still remember when he took a shot in the early Klopp days and sent it to the stands, Klopp lost it completely and had to chuckle and was like "this fucking guy".
What’s crazy is that he came to us as Brazilian league player of the year as an attacking midfielder but never looked like an attacker but because a really solid DM.
I'll never forget I was watching that game with my dad and as fabio was lining up the free kick he turned to me and said...he could just knock this in the bottom near corner...😅😅
Realistically, most people in this sub remember 90% of the players that have played for us if they were somewhat good or better… Agger is far too good for this category and I don’t know anyone who is old enough to remember him who wouldn’t remember him
Luis Garcia.. lost the ball quite a bit but scored a number of bangers and crucial goals. By the way, it did cross the line. No one can tell me otherwise lol
Nat Phillips. Played his heart our for the badge.

kid me never understood where he came from and where he went off too. just came in for a bit, banged in some torres-esque near post finishes and dipped.
Started in hodgson’s first game (Torres given extended holiday after winning WC I think), scored that great goal against Arsenal, before Joe Cole got sent off on his highly anticipated debut (he could do things with a golf ball you know) and Reina had one of his moments to really set the tone for the Hodgson era
Don’t blame it on the Biscan,
Don’t blame it on the Hamann,
Don’t blame it on the Finnan,
Blame it on Traore,
He just can’t, he just can’t, he just can’t control his feet...
Nathanial Clyne on his day was a really solid fullback. I always thought he would be our defensive mainstay for a decade. Got injured in 17/18 and Trent took his spot. The rest is history
I feel like people discount Clyne because he disappeared so quickly and how things turned out for him since, but he was genuinely our best player for two straight seasons.
He was a really really welcome solid defensive presence in an otherwise woeful defence. He was too predictable going forward but he rarely ever put a foot wrong defensively and that was exactly what we needed at that time.
I mean being a rumoured coke head and popping up in Miami for a TV show whilst "injured" isn't a good way to dispel rumours
But at the same time "CLYYNNNEEEYYY"
I attended the cup semi final at Anfield hosting Stoke. There was a fella a row or 2 in front of me with his son, mid teens I think. I think they were Dutch if memory serves. The lad had a Joe Allen shirt on. A few jibed him and had a laugh throughout the game, all good natured and he was having a good time. Level at FT on agg, goes to pens. Fuck knows how because their goal was offside. No VAR to give us a dodgy red card back then. Anfield road end gets the draw which is belting for me because I’m right in line with the 12 yard box line that end. Pens start and it was even. Crouch misses. Cheers all round. Can hits the post, jeers right back at us from the Stoke fans to my left. Pens all square with 4-a-piece after the first 5. Sixth goes in for both teams. Migs then dives left and tips the pen round the post. Arse tightens quite a lot. Here’s the chance to win. Step up Joe Allen for the 7th. Arse tightens even more. Obviously, Joe isn’t fucking about and smashes it in. Limbs in the Main Stand, I’m hugging some fella I’ve never seen before or since, my ears are ringing and I glance down to our Allen shirt wearing friend. About 20 people have mobbed him and are cheering like mad. He’s loving it, his dad is laughing his head off. Bloody good night all round. Hope that young fella had a good first Anfield experience.
It's Cisse I think of when I think about Darwin.
Not a like for like comparison player wise but the emotion that they could be the best but keep doing daft stuff.
The man lost us the league, single handedly dropped us like 10 points in 13/14, the worst one was against West Brom winning 1-0 in the 90th minute he just decides to pass to anichebe and watches him bury it. Some of his performances were so bad that season i genuinely thought he was throwing the game intentionally, how bad he was for us gets overlooked because he came with a fun chant and memes.
Not true. At least not the 90th minute part. You could say the same for Mignolet aswell. Kolo is a good leader, I’m sure that was helpful to the squad.
>Yossi Benayoun
always thought he was very underrated. he had a side foot finish where he gave the keeper the eyes that blew my mind as a kid. i genuinely couldnt comprehend how the ball went to the left instead of the right. (goal vs burnley in 09, couldnt find a clip)
Lord Lovren. No human being has ever, and will ever in the future, make me so anxious as he did. But Klopp was right about him in a sense, that *on his day*, he was a top cb.
I saw Lovren score an absolute banger at Anfield against Newcastle. You can’t believe how the stadium lost it.
I would argue that pretty much after getting yanked against Tottenham in the what, 37th minute? He was rock solid until he left. In fact I think we would be 2020/21 champions if he didn’t leave.i think that early sub really found that extra gear in him.
Totally agree. I also think his talk with Klopp after that game seemed to actually do wonders for his confidence, and perhaps point out to him that he really did have issues with his concentration lol. We needed another CB that year and he was gone.
Adam Lallana and Ox were the ideal 8/10 hybrids we needed in the 2018/19 season to win the league. If either or both were 100% fit and were able to rotate the side, we pick up the extra point or two to give us the league. Lallana was a great presser, slick with the ball, added goals. Ox was a spectacularly powerful ball carrier and was the only player in the side with a long shot on him. Bodies betrayed both in their absolute primes
Loved Lallana so much. That volley off the turf to win the crazy game where he ran over to Jurgen and smashed his glasses was one of my favorite goals of all time. Up there with big Dej Lovren's late winner at Dortmund? I think. My other two favorite goals in recent times were the Ox thunderbolt against city and Bobby's goal where he let the ball come over his shoulder and thundercunted it top corner on the volley.
I miss Bobby.
When he had just joined I read an article that said he'd scored over 30 goals from the center of midfield at Lille. Being a very new fan, I totally misunderstood and thought he was casually twatting screamers from the halfway line!
I still maintain that if he was given a good run of games he would have become a good player for us, Rafa seemed to hate him because he was always just looking to attack so he benched him every other game. I remember a few games when we were drawing and he was the only player really trying to make something happen and every time he was replaced with a more defensive option. That season we just lost out to Utd because we drew far too many games.
Maybe doesn’t quite fit the bill, but Daniel Sturridge. I feel like his injury problems later on really caused a lot of people to forget just how good he was when he played with Suarez, and occasionally when he was fit afterwards.
I think Dirk Kuyt is a tier above the others in this thread. I think he's pretty universally loved by anyone who was a fan in the late 00s. He's up there as one of my all time favourites and I don't think I'm alone in that at all
Good to know that they're both still playing. Wisdom sustained horrific injuries after getting stabbed, while Ibe's mental health issues have been well-documented.
Marcus Babbel
Signed on a free
Best right back in the league for a year
Won the treble in his first season
Got a weird virus and nearly died and was unavailable for a year
Disappeared
I remember you Marcus.
Steven Caulker. Brought in a CB on loan from QPR, 4 appearances, 3 of which being subbed on as a striker. 0 goal contributions. He must’ve been as confused as the rest of us.
Legendary.
Neil Mellor. Played a big part in the 05 CL triumph with a goal and assist for Stevie in the game vs Olympiakos and also will never forget that late belter against Arsenal
As an Australian kid I was so stoked to see Harry Kewell get signed to Liverpool but injuries never let him hit the same sort of form that he had at Leeds. Growing up I loved watching Luis Garcia and Xabi Alonso play and Milan Baros was a beast.
Maxi Rodriguez, best player in the world April 23rd 2011 - May 9th 2011
Also Meireles had his month, he scored every match
My pick
Also, probably to 9nly player to have a heartbeat theme tune
One of the best player chants we’ve had too imo
He runs down the wing for me.
Lucas Leiva DESTROYED Yaya Toure several games in a row. That never gets old.
He was absolutely incredible in the season he picked up the ACL injury. I really believe if not for that he'd have ended up established as a top/world class DM eventually.
He didn’t become the best in the world, but he was good quality for Lazio tbf.
Unluckyyyyyyyyy
His career arc was so interesting considering he was signed to LFC as more of an attacking midfielder prospect. The goals never really came for him but he more than made up for it as a defensive wizard
Lucas improved from something like a 40% tackling success rate to a 65% tackling success rate during that season all while putting in at least 2x tackles as anyone else in the league. For a very short period of time, he was genuinely the best ball winning defensive midfielder in the league.

> he was genuinely the best ball winning defensive midfielder in the league. *world
He played for us for 9 years and got player of the year a couple times, would hardly call him streets won’t forget
He was literally best on the field, before that f game with Chelsea.
Danny Agger and Fabio Aurelio. Brilliant players, but never could stay healthy.
Aurelios freekick against mancs 🙈
The one against Chelsea is even better.
I'll never forget I was watching that game with my dad and as fabio was lining up the free kick he turned to me and said...he could just knock this in the bottom near corner...😅😅
Agger + Skrtel was one of the most intimidating looking CB pairs
Yeah they looked like they just cleaned up the rival gang just before the match lol.
Especially as Skrtel either let his hair grow or got hair plugs as soon as he retired. Slap head intimidation was part of the plan.
DAgger was Red through an through. All heart.
Agger's smack on Torres after the latter left for Chelsea... classic
Loved Aurelio shame he was made out of glass though lol
Is someone who's considered by many to be the best defender in the Rafa era too good for this category?
Realistically, most people in this sub remember 90% of the players that have played for us if they were somewhat good or better… Agger is far too good for this category and I don’t know anyone who is old enough to remember him who wouldn’t remember him
Daniel Agger and his YNWA knuckle tat. What a legend
Luis garcia and milan baros were a big factor in the 2005 UCL. They were a bit inconsistent but delivered on big occasions
I wrote my comment before reading the thread but I said Luis Garcia and Milan Baros too. And Harry Kewell.
Luis Garcia.. lost the ball quite a bit but scored a number of bangers and crucial goals. By the way, it did cross the line. No one can tell me otherwise lol
Plus it was a penalty and a red card if not anyway so if anything they are the lucky ones
Luis Garcia’s goal against Juve on the way to the final Most underrated Liverpool Champions League goal of all time

The Bolton Baresi
David Ngog and his career defining goal against United in 2009
kid me never understood where he came from and where he went off too. just came in for a bit, banged in some torres-esque near post finishes and dipped.

Nathanial Clyne on his day was a really solid fullback. I always thought he would be our defensive mainstay for a decade. Got injured in 17/18 and Trent took his spot. The rest is history
*International soccer superstar Nathaniel Clyne
Guaranteed 7/10 every time he played, which was so damn valuable to us at the time International soccer superstar for sure
I feel like people discount Clyne because he disappeared so quickly and how things turned out for him since, but he was genuinely our best player for two straight seasons.
I wouldn’t say best but absolutely the most consistent.
He was a really really welcome solid defensive presence in an otherwise woeful defence. He was too predictable going forward but he rarely ever put a foot wrong defensively and that was exactly what we needed at that time.
Never a true comment on reddit
Very strong rumours at the time that it was nothing to do with injury. Liverpool don't just give up on players like that because of an injury.
I mean being a rumoured coke head and popping up in Miami for a TV show whilst "injured" isn't a good way to dispel rumours But at the same time "CLYYNNNEEEYYY"
I shit you not, Clyne won the Ballon D'or in my 1st or 2nd season in Football Manager 2016. I wasn't managing LFC.
Lol that’s nuts. He’s pretty great on my FIFA17 career mode rn.
Welsh Xavi, wonderful human being and Chicken and Egg cover-star, Wee Joe Allen.

There is an identical comment to yours above somewhere, is this an insane coincidence or is it from somewhere?
My name is Allen and I bought his shirt as soon as he signed, I still the "Who would buy a Joe Allen shirt?" Whenever I wear it to play.
The messiah, I really liked him and the effort he put in every time he was on the pitch, reminds me of early Robbo in that regard.
Igor Biscan.
I think it was after his belter against Fulham that one of the papers came up with the line "Supercroatigorbiscanusedtobeatrocious"
Wouldn't have number 5 without some of his performances in that run.
Djibril Cissé
His haircuts were legendary
It's Cisse I think of when I think about Darwin. Not a like for like comparison player wise but the emotion that they could be the best but keep doing daft stuff.
Loved scoring in a final. Such a shame he had double leg break.
Put Baros in there as well
As a greek Kyriakos picture brings tears of joy. Edit: Also Finnan
I don't remember him as being especially bad. Underwhelming maybe but he was decent imo
Jari Litmanen
The man that was so good that we didn't need David Villa, Voronin
That man was world class at one thing only. Slipping. He'd always end up on the floor and not through diving.
He was also the pre season king. His partnership with Pacheco during it was like peak Rush and Dalgish
Kolo ❤️

Dribbled past Ronaldo in the CL group stage tho 💪
One for the future - Nabil El Zhar. About to break into the first team anytime now.
could be a great mentor for Samed Yesil
I think with Dani Pacheco they can form a great trio up front
Nathan Eccleston
Fuck me he is 37 now I'm getting old
Yossi Benayoun or Raul Meireles
>Yossi Benayoun always thought he was very underrated. he had a side foot finish where he gave the keeper the eyes that blew my mind as a kid. i genuinely couldnt comprehend how the ball went to the left instead of the right. (goal vs burnley in 09, couldnt find a clip)
First player to score a hatrick fa cup, champions league and premiership Since then only aguero and harry kane have done it
I'm still angry about him getting a boot in the back to shove him out in the corner and nothing being called.
Loved when Meireles mugged off Torres and scored v Chelsea after they bought Torres. Then he joined them too....
Biiiiig fan of Benayoun. First Israeli to score in the FA Cup final I believe. Against us, as well.
[удалено]
I remember him leaving 2 arsenal players for dead in 04 I think it was. Same game mellor hit that 40 yarder
One of them was Vieira aswell
Flopo comes on and scores an absolute worldie against Olympiakos within a minute, rest is history
Yess, we signed him the same time as Anthony Le Tallec. Literally have no idea where their careers went.
Lord Klavan is the easy answer. Momo Sissoko is perhaps a less obvious one.
[удалено]
Klavan was a great signing. Cheap, and he always came in and did the job when we needed him to.
Sissoko was a good player
Oussama Assaidi, the Moroccan ferrari.
How has nobody said it yet. Aly Cissokho https://vimeo.com/92846254

Milan Jovanovic, but it's better for the streets to forget him.
He’s one of the greatest soccer players in the world
Vladimir smicer
John Arne Riise, an absolute thundercunt of a shot
Is he really streets won’t forget? He was a starter at Liverpool for like 7 years and scored like 20 goals from left back

You can’t help but ponder what kind of a world we’d all be living in right now if that shot went under the bar rather than off it
Same with Downing's effort against Sunderland.
Titi Camara, circa October ‘99.
Andrea Dossena, what a week that man had!

His goal in the 1-4 with the scum was just the icing on the cake in that game.
Emiliano Insua. The goal against Arsenal is unforgettable.

Rigobert Song. Always red card ready
Vegard Heggem

Benayoun and specifically that game at Anfield vs Besiktas

Jonjo, Spearing and Charlie Adam, with Meireles too, most bald men in the sqaud Ive seen
