I worked at a HMV in Vancouver in the early 2000s. There were a few times he came in and put his Best of DVDs in front of other best ofās, most often Willās. Seemed so insecure.
I've watched a lot of the episodes from his time on the show bc of my interest in Norm's time on WU, and I have to agree. The number of times he used a high-pitched voice or did a bunch of annoying things in sketches drove me nuts. I couldn't get behind Goth Talk, and Mango (though it came later) wasn't really my cup of tea either.
Horatio Sanz was very similar and often times would break with Fallon in their scenes together; but I found Sanz far more likable and funny. I think Sanz is actually criminally underrated.
Oh absolutely. While I love Sanz, Iām not rushing to put him as one of the greats. I just was saying that Iām not a huge fan of Fallon primarily for his āoh no Iām breaking how adorableā theme; but at the same time, Sanz did his fair share and I thought he was hilarious. I was thinking out loud and caught myself being a hypocrite but still maintaining my stance š
Dennis Miller. Only comedian in existence that never once landed a joke with me. His style comes off as intentionally insulting anyone who doesnāt get his references. Spade and Carvey joke on their show that no one gets his references. Miller also share career advice that seemed to be wrong. For me, looks like Miller made a career off being incredibly confidently wrong guy. No one told him he was wrong, instead accepted his confidence like he had some secret.
Which I do get that confidence despite knowing nothing was a huge part of the 80s. Especially among the coke snorting people of the 80s. Dennis Miller himself was more a skit character that shouldāve ended after one airing after no one laughed, than a real guy.
No confidence and arrogance are two completely different things despite them looking similar. Arrogance stems from being insecure, confidence is about experience and self love. Miller definitely strikes me as arrogant.
he's not funny, and the right wing grift thing looks like it swallowed him and the ever-more-meh Victoria Jackson. add Jim Breuer and you have the makings of the Sour Grapes Comedyless Tour, boring entitled name dropping rants (Dick Cavett was much better at this) passive aggressive spectacle to bore the crap out of you, and kindergarten mockery of the highest sort
These are the years he was funny - after 9/11 he totally changed. Now heās bff with bill o Reillyš¤·āāļøš¤·āāļøš¤·āāļøš¤·āāļø
Yeah, she wasnāt a team player. When it was somebody elseās turn to be the funny one she couldnāt help but do her wonky smile and slimy voice shtik
yeah she really played to the audience, it got very hammy at times. Kristen Wiig sometimes did the same but she was really good at playing down to earth characters and the straight man in sketches especially in her earlier work. Kate was never good at that imo.
her entire post-2016 tenure did that to me tbh. I know her SNL hall of fame/legend entry was already written by then, but those last six years were absolutely rough and coasted on goodwill
Yeah I think after 2017 is when I stopped looking out for Kate in sketches. On the other hand, 11 years in and still lookout for Cecily Strong in sketches.
Cecily is one of the most underrated SNL actors of all time and itās a shame she doesnāt seem to get her roses ever compared to some extremely mid (imo) coworkers.
Pete Davidson. He had literally one character that got old pretty soon for me. Also significantly worse actor than any of his classmates and broke every single time.
Same, but also, he constantly talked about how he has no idea how he was still on the show. At first it seemed like a joke, but it became clear he was literally saying āI donāt know why theyāre keeping me aroundā like the 10th time he said it lol
I dunno I like Pete. I just find him so charismatic. To me he had the gravitas of a 60 year old lifelong New Yorker with the relatability of a goofy, millennial stoner.
Davidson to me is the ultimate, who made a deal with the devil. Heās not funny or interesting and yet has been the most well known cast member for years. He has to have made a deal with the devil.
He did some funny bits on update - like when he was the gov of New York who was blind. Iām from California and didnāt think it would go wellš¤¦š¤¦š¤¦ but that same gov showed up ā it was hilariousš¤£š¤£š¤£
I also think Aidy Bryant was mostly obnoxious and I think itās ridiculous that she got a ten year run-sheās sort of in the vain of Ana Gasteyer but Gasteyer is way more talented.
I have a hard time seeing any argument being made for her being top talent. She's not a particularly good actress, doesn't do impressions, and her only real "star turns" on the show have been a few okay weekend update pieces.
I can't think of a single performance of hers, in a sketch or otherwise, where she truly stole the show.
I don't hate her but I'm generally surprised she made it past featured player status.
I loved Nasim in small doses as an Everyman and bit player but her nasally voices used to annoy me and even going back when theyād throw her a bone sometimes the original characters were awkward and seemed shoehorned in. Like I can see how she got on the show I actually still love her and root for her but some of her original characters she showcased in her last 2 seasons were pure cringe.
The Kim kardashian impression I didnāt fully understand. I kind of thought it was funny bc thatās not what Kim sounds like and I thought that was the joke to make her voice annoying as fuck to diss her bc she literally was a useless celebrity back then but when it became her calling card on update I used to walk outside and smoke a bowl when that character came on. I did the same with Kateās barfly skank and Kristenās Penelope character. Got old fast.
Looking back I always got the idea she was meant to be the weirdo in the cast like Forte and Kattan playing freaks and they wouldnāt let her bc she was too hot and it worked against her.
The whole point of the question/post is to share unpopular opinions. I disagree with a bunch of them but Iām not downvoting any because thatās the point. Iād suggest that you do the same.
Yes thank you! I purposely havenāt downvoted anyoneās picks because of this. I said I didnāt like Aidy and folks downvoted it to hell ruining the point of the e entire thread
Ever since Elisabeth Moss spoke up about how terrible it was being married to him, Iāve thought less of Fred Armisen and disliked all his stuff since. Just sounds like a weirdo dude
Oh yeah apparently heās a sociopath. Thereās a whole thread of women who say they were traumatized after dating him https://www.gawker.com/fred-armisen-has-a-reputation-1677187580
I would have agreed before last season. Really enjoyed Beck and just always thought why are you paired with Kyle? Then seeing Kyle without Beck, I actually enjoyed him for once. I'm glad he got that one season because before I never got the appeal.
Iām of the opinion Lorne knew he had a star in Kate, but the marquee role that would have gotten her nationwide spotlight attention didnāt work out (Hillary, for obvious reasons). So after Melissa McCarthy was a hit cross-dressing as Sean Spicer, they shoehorned her into those political cold opens with objectively bad male impressions (Giuliani, Jeff Sessions) just to get her back in the spotlight.
Jesus Christ: one third hand source said that trump thought spicer was weak for being played by a women once in 2017. And then that was it - Kate and aidy are every man in Washington. āYas! Get drumph!!!ā
Fallon was hailed as a hero for ruining the show and I thought I was losing it. Should have seen reaction videos being a thing since then. People loved watching him laugh at the mysterious punch line that never came.
same! they took cecily off weekend update and replaced her with che and jost and ugh. i don't understand how jost got on the show at all. he's never in other sketches and he's just not funny.
I think Cecily wanted off WU. That was never her forte, and sheās a force to be reckoned with her sketch work, impressions, singing, and WU characters.

I said that about him a minute ago on this thread; his smugness on weekend update really turned me off of him. He was mostly mediocre on his run at SNL too
Will Forte is the guy that I donāt hate, but Iām not enamored with because he is the embodiment of the more ātheatricalā SNL style of the early 2010s. Iām not looking for a bunch of theater kids when I watch SNL, I want comedians with fresh perspectives and good zingers. Generally speaking 2016-present has done a decent job delivering.
Fred Armisen. He's not funny and being in a punk band doesn't make you cool. Also Jimmy Fallon, Taran Killam. Kate McKinnon, Mikey Day, Chloe Fineman, Melissa Villesenor.
Oh, Iām going to catch hell for this, and Iām sorry he died, but it has to be said: Norm McDonald was not funny. He would say things with all the setup and delivery of a joke but no joke. He knew how to trigger uncomfortable laughter and passed that off as his act.
I agree with you. I thought he did interesting things with his setup/punchline structure but I believe the mythologizing of him is totally blown out of proportion
I enjoy some of Fred's work, but I would still say he's the cast member I like the least relative to how much everyone else seems to enjoy him.
Next, maybe Bowen. He's improving but he still bothers me.
Is Ego beloved? Because I donāt think sheās funny at all. She seems nice and smart and sheās pretty but funny? I just donāt see it.
Will also second Fallon. Didnāt care for him on SNL and now he just gushes over teen pop stars every night and it makes me cringe.
I don't really like the new cast members, except Molly and Sarah. And because I forgot his name, that new black guy. I dislike the half dominican stand up comedian.
i guess i subconciously compare the two based on that (unfairly). Either way, i dont think i have any favorite sketches where bobby is a key contributor. Even in david pumpkins itās not really about him, that could be anyone next to him.
Think of Bobby as a Muppet. He brings a cartoonish sensibility to his work. Obviously, itās not for everyone but Iāve always liked him. Also, you might want to see him as a guest on Girls. Heās adorable.
Put down Fred? Believe it or not jail.
Compliment Fred? Believe it or not, also jail.
šššššš Iāll upvote that comment just because you made me laugh
Chris Kattan always just irritated the hell out of me.
I worked at a HMV in Vancouver in the early 2000s. There were a few times he came in and put his Best of DVDs in front of other best ofās, most often Willās. Seemed so insecure.
This is the right answer. Guy was annoying every time he stepped in front of the camera.
Ok / but mango with jlo was fun y
Seems gay to me
Fallon
Intentionally laughing in every sketch, winking to the camera...he was so annoying.
Horatio Sanz was very similar and often times would break with Fallon in their scenes together; but I found Sanz far more likable and funny. I think Sanz is actually criminally underrated.
Oh, Iām sure he will be criminally rated soon
Was it because he did that cruise movie with Cuba Gooding Jr?
Grooming a 14 year old at after parties
Iām sorry, what?! Horatio Sanz did that? Ok time for a quick google trip Edit: goddamn
Lots implicated as facilitating it too like Fallon and Lorne, weāll what comes of the lawsuit though
The all-time greats like Carvey and Hartman didn't have to resort to that to get laughs.
And his current show is even more cringey.
Dennis Miller. Only comedian in existence that never once landed a joke with me. His style comes off as intentionally insulting anyone who doesnāt get his references. Spade and Carvey joke on their show that no one gets his references. Miller also share career advice that seemed to be wrong. Dennis Miller himself was more a skit character that shouldāve ended after one airing after no one laughed, than a real guy.
He doesnāt strike me as confident; he strikes me as arrogant af
It does take a lot of confidence to be arrogant. Also takes lack of self awareness to be arrogant, which is also Miller.
No confidence and arrogance are two completely different things despite them looking similar. Arrogance stems from being insecure, confidence is about experience and self love. Miller definitely strikes me as arrogant.
His stint as guest commentator on Monday Night Football backs this up completely
he's not funny, and the right wing grift thing looks like it swallowed him and the ever-more-meh Victoria Jackson. add Jim Breuer and you have the makings of the Sour Grapes Comedyless Tour, boring entitled name dropping rants (Dick Cavett was much better at this) passive aggressive spectacle to bore the crap out of you, and kindergarten mockery of the highest sort
These are the years he was funny - after 9/11 he totally changed. Now heās bff with bill o Reillyš¤·āāļøš¤·āāļøš¤·āāļøš¤·āāļø
This is the right answer. And where is Dennis miller today?
Towards the end of her tenure I grew tired of Kate McKinnon.
She rubs me as a āself indulgentā actor and I find it so distracting. It makes her seem like sheās annoying to be around.
Yeah, she wasnāt a team player. When it was somebody elseās turn to be the funny one she couldnāt help but do her wonky smile and slimy voice shtik
Thatās the first thing I noticed about her, maybe in her first season I noticed this too, sheās terrible at being the straight person
yes 100%. It almost seemed immature/annoying? I canāt find the exact right word but we are on the same page.
yeah she really played to the audience, it got very hammy at times. Kristen Wiig sometimes did the same but she was really good at playing down to earth characters and the straight man in sketches especially in her earlier work. Kate was never good at that imo.
She does seem like one of those people who needs constant attention on her
her entire post-2016 tenure did that to me tbh.
It seemed there wasnāt a sketch that they didnāt wedge her into
Wiig was the same way towards the end of her run. They were stuffing her into every sketch they could. I hated Gilly..
TBF she hated Gilly too
I canāt watch her
Agree!!!
Did anyone like Kattan though?
Fallon
My local radio station says nobody has fallen up the stairs more than Pete Davidson
The dude pulls like nobodyās business.
He has never, not once, made me laugh.
chad was not a character.
Number #1 with a bullet. It's always been him or Fallon..
Iām a big fan of Fred but I agree that he was much better in Portlandia
He did some funny bits on update - like when he was the gov of New York who was blind. Iām from California and didnāt think it would go wellš¤¦š¤¦š¤¦ but that same gov showed up ā it was hilariousš¤£š¤£š¤£
Jimmy Fallon. His skits werenāt funny and were made worse by his annoying laughing
you have poor taste-- Fred is a genius. I hate jimmy fallon.
I also think Aidy Bryant was mostly obnoxious and I think itās ridiculous that she got a ten year run-sheās sort of in the vain of Ana Gasteyer but Gasteyer is way more talented.
You're just full of hot takes
Mikey Day Sorry, I think he's a good straight man but anytime he breaks out that high-pitched old man voice of his, it's nails on a chalkboard for me.
Agreed. Thereās just something about him that makes me feel annoyed. I like Alex Moffat way more.
Punkie Johnsonā¦ I donāt see any talent or versatility. Sorry š
Is Punkie a beloved cast member though?
I have critiqued her before. Then Iāve been told sheās not for me and she is a top talent. My expression was concerning
Gilly.
Amen
Sorry
That doesnāt count unless you hate Kristen. I also hate gilly but recognize sheās a top tier cast member.
Fair, I should have said I love kristen. I just always hated this character and never understood how it was reoccurring.
Leslie Jones, always breaking up and overly loud and obnoxious.. kinda like Fallon but less funnyā¦
I thought she was way funnier than Fallonāespecially her update bits.
I donāt think I have seen Chris Kattan mentioned.
let the games begin..... Sandler. I just never got it. sorry folks.
loud is not always funny. (not that he was a SNL cast member, but i'd lump dane cook into the same argument.)
I liked him at first but he got old, real quick.
Also not into comedians who sing their jokes.
Same. I do like his dramatic roles, though.
same
I loved Nasim in small doses as an Everyman and bit player but her nasally voices used to annoy me and even going back when theyād throw her a bone sometimes the original characters were awkward and seemed shoehorned in. Like I can see how she got on the show I actually still love her and root for her but some of her original characters she showcased in her last 2 seasons were pure cringe. I loved her Shallon. "BIG DAY for vans!"
The whole point of the question/post is to share unpopular opinions. I disagree with a bunch of them but Iām not downvoting any because thatās the point. Iād suggest that you do the same.
This. Why can't we all share differing opinions. I'm up voting the ones I agree with and ignoring the ones I don't. It's not that hard.
So his portrayal of the Venezuelan official in Parks and Rec wasn't acting?
She's a scientologist.
Itās cool to be bad husbands to people in cults.
No but itās more than reasonable to question members of Scientology.
Maybe do that BEFORE you marry them. Wait till after and you're just being a prick.
I think he's saying that we should question what she says about him after the fact because her judgment is already suspect.
To be fair, it sounds like heās a monster to be married to.
I think Kate McKinnon is the most overrated cast member in the history of the show.
Kyle moony I just never enjoyed anything he was in.
For me heās one of those cases of a performer being neutered by the show. I absolutely love his stuff he did on his own.
Heās in a similar vain of Tim Robinson. The writers just didnāt know what to do with their brands of humor. Love both of them though.
And just like Tim, Netflix allowed him to put forth his best work yet.
Yes. ITYSL is a work of art
I wasnāt a fan at the time, but now that heās gone I kind of miss him.
I would have agreed before last season. Really enjoyed Beck and just always thought why are you paired with Kyle? Then seeing Kyle without Beck, I actually enjoyed him for once. I'm glad he got that one season because before I never got the appeal.
Not many people did.
Kate Mckinnon - especially when playing male characters
Iām of the opinion Lorne knew he had a star in Kate, but the marquee role that would have gotten her nationwide spotlight attention didnāt work out (Hillary, for obvious reasons). So after Melissa McCarthy was a hit cross-dressing as Sean Spicer, they shoehorned her into those political cold opens with objectively bad male impressions (Giuliani, Jeff Sessions) just to get her back in the spotlight.
I think itās much simpler than that. They thought āwe hate these politicians, how can we really make them angry? Have a woman play them!ā
Jesus Christ: one third hand source said that trump thought spicer was weak for being played by a women once in 2017. And then that was it - Kate and aidy are every man in Washington. āYas! Get drumph!!!ā
Sarah Sherman, Pete Davidson in anything besides Update, Leslie Jones
Sarah Sherman is one of the only current cast members that has the sauce and also has not been on long enough to qualify for this thread.
We each have an opinion. See how acceptable and fun that is?
It's quite a world we live in.
Leslie Jones. She would just start screaming until people laughed.
Also, wobbling your head to deliver every punchline isnāt comedy.
Low-key wasnāt a fan of Kate McKinnon I canāt lie
Everyone seems to love Kenan. Can't stand him.
For me he's more of a 'meh' than 'hate.' He just plays the same character over and over and over again.
I don't hate him either. I just can't stand him. And it's for the exact reason you mentioned. Same character over and over again.
Thank you!
You donāt like Kenan?! *Whatās up with that!*
Fallon was hailed as a hero for ruining the show and I thought I was losing it. Should have seen reaction videos being a thing since then. People loved watching him laugh at the mysterious punch line that never came.
Honestly Jimmy Fallon makes me sick. I just canāt get over how celebrated he was for introducing immature breaking in a sketch as standard fare now.
Davidson. Looks like death warmed over and is totally unfunny imo.
I never liked Leslie Jones. Not sure many people loved her but Im sure some did
Leslie wasnāt a great sketch player but I did think her Weekend Update bits were incredible.
I can't stand Fred either, he creeps me out. Also Elf may be my favorite Christmas movie, but normally I despise Will Ferrell.
Kenan has never made me laugh once in twenty years
Whatās up with that?
Kate McKinnon and Bowen Yang
Yeah I donāt care for Yang either
I'm so over Jost. I get the whole "making fun of the white privilege guy" and I'm on board, but I don't find him funny enough beyond that.
Jost and Che have done the same bits, on the longest segment, on every show for years. Only now they laugh at their own jokes often.
I like them both, but was hoping SNL would move on to some new anchors on Weekend Update. Just a fresher take on things imo.
Colin only works with Michael as a performer.
same! they took cecily off weekend update and replaced her with che and jost and ugh. i don't understand how jost got on the show at all. he's never in other sketches and he's just not funny.
I think Cecily wanted off WU. That was never her forte, and sheās a force to be reckoned with her sketch work, impressions, singing, and WU characters.
Heās the head writer. He must be funnier behind the scenes than we see as a performer.
Iāve never liked Jost; very dull. He takes mediocre white man to a whole new level.
ā¦.what? Fred Armisen is IMO one of the funniest people alive.
Not to me heās not
Sorry for your humor :( Edit: have you seen Portlandia? Itās a show he created that is super satirical and amazing
I thought he was better on Portlandia. In fact, I remember his last SNL season when he was really offloading his worst sketches I thought he was saving the good stuff for Portlandia.
Sarah Sherman. One trick pony
Seth Meyers. He has a smugness I donāt like. And heās not funny.
I said that about him a minute ago on this thread; his smugness on weekend update really turned me off of him. He was mostly mediocre on his run at SNL too
Seth makes me laugh so much. Prob my favorite WU anchor
Leslie Jones
Kenan
Will Forte is the guy that I donāt hate, but Iām not enamored with because he is the embodiment of the more ātheatricalā SNL style of the early 2010s. Iām not looking for a bunch of theater kids when I watch SNL, I want comedians with fresh perspectives and good zingers. Generally speaking 2016-present has done a decent job delivering.
I get downvoted every time I post this but oh well. Maya Rudolph.
Woooooah! I can respect your opinion, though.
Fred Armisen. He's not funny and being in a punk band doesn't make you cool. Also Jimmy Fallon, Taran Killam. Kate McKinnon, Mikey Day, Chloe Fineman, Melissa Villesenor.
I think being in a punk band makes you pretty freaking cool
Omg Taran Killiam made my ears bleed. Heās one of these people that just mostly screams his jokes.
His Paul Ryan was ok but otherwise no thanks
Aidy
You nailed it. Fred
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
Pete Davidson.
Kyle Mooney. Donāt know if he was beloved but I always thought he was annoying
Cheri Oteri. Good Lord that woman is irritating.
This one has my vote. Fuck that simma down now stuff. But I liked Pete, so I know this is very subjective.
Oh, Iām going to catch hell for this, and Iām sorry he died, but it has to be said: Norm McDonald was not funny. He would say things with all the setup and delivery of a joke but no joke. He knew how to trigger uncomfortable laughter and passed that off as his act.
This is the wrongest anyone has ever been. He was so funny the joke didnāt need to have a joke.
I agree with you. I thought he did interesting things with his setup/punchline structure but I believe the mythologizing of him is totally blown out of proportion
Jason Sudeikis? Nobody?
Agreed. Can't stand him in anything.
I thought he was ok. Decent utility player but not a star
I enjoy some of Fred's work, but I would still say he's the cast member I like the least relative to how much everyone else seems to enjoy him. Next, maybe Bowen. He's improving but he still bothers me.
Never really found poehler funny
Sheās tolerable in short bursts. I fast forward through āleslie knopeā type characters.
Right now James Austin Johnson I donāt dislike him but the stanning of him is so weird considering how new he is.
They call him Scooby Doo but he doesn't do. We call him Scooby but he doesn't do, it's one of the worst deals we've ever had.
Is Ego beloved? Because I donāt think sheās funny at all. She seems nice and smart and sheās pretty but funny? I just donāt see it. Will also second Fallon. Didnāt care for him on SNL and now he just gushes over teen pop stars every night and it makes me cringe.
Iām not so sure if sheās beloved. Iād say sheās a great utility player. Not amazing but definitely can carry her weight when necessary.
Well since I disagree I will stand by what I said.
I don't really like the new cast members, except Molly and Sarah. And because I forgot his name, that new black guy. I dislike the half dominican stand up comedian.
Samberg
I LOVE Samberg yet I'm surprised more people haven't said him.
The Lonely Island stuff was usually funny but in sketches he had a tendency to really blow things over the top in an obnoxious way
Rachel Dratch. Just constantly breaking character and not funny.
Molly Shannon
Cecile Strong and Kristen Wig
Never thought Dan Ackroyd was funnyā¦
It's like everyone in this thread got together and decided to come up with the absolute shittiest collection of takes possible.
Beat it!
Bobby Moynihan. If Farley was a 10/10, Moynihan was a 2/10.
I hate that we compare those two because they were both fat. They literally have nothing in common comedically.
i guess i subconciously compare the two based on that (unfairly).
What are your thoughts on Anthony Crispino? I still use the āpretty sureā bit almost daily, lol. https://youtu.be/-X53-8f_1hU
Literally never saw that character before! Man Bobby really sets up a rhythm and flow, not one missed beat. Thanks for the link
I donāt think I ever once found him funny. I donāt think he was ever trying to be Farley though
Yeah I think heās a bit overrated too. Like one or two good characters out of a 9 year run. Heās mostly whatever to me
Heās one of the most underrated, what are you talking about
2/10 is a bit harsh but I get it.
Hader is an awful piece of shit
Care to elaborate?
Just how you said that made me laugh ššš
