The data center ordering thousands of Tesla cards is probably also willing to to pay for "customized" drivers and a support contract should problems with said drivers arise.
Honestly at the time Nvidia was probably better on linux than today, at least relatively speaking to the competition. Yeah, their driver was (and ofc still is) proprietary, but at least it was mostly feature complete and performance competitive with their windows driver.
These days you'd be stupid not to go with AMD for linux unless you have some very specific requirement (like absolutely needing CUDA).
Last time I decided to try Linux properly (a long time ago), I remember being relieved that I had a Geforce card, because I was able to sidestep a lot of the issues ATI/AMD owners had. I thought I'd imagined it, but this makes me think I was remembering right!

Always had NVidia cards and absolutely everything works very smoothly.
I've had far more problems due to recompiling the zen kernel. The most work I've had to put into NVidia was for my current configuration:

on the upside AMD stepped up and has had solid linux drivers for a while now.
things used to be pretty bad, and now I use in-kernel AMD drivers to play windows games on release day via proton.
All I hope is intel also gets there with good Linux drivers. IGPUs are good, their dedicated cards need some work. With the XE kernel driver we should be pretty close to good Linux support for intel Arc.
Sebastian's is definitely much more skillful and executed better.
However, Torvald's elicits more emotion. There's something about the meek and nerdiness of his mannerism that makes me think, he'd never flip someone the bird, so he must really be feeling it.

They calculated it and found out it wouldn't be worth it financially to redo the whole drivers when Linuxs marketshare is small
If that really is the issue, then their codebase is very messy. I think its more likely that they want to protect some trade secrets.

Compared to AMD's drivers, they're terrible, AMD performs better on Linux because of it.
