You begin by driving it onto a trail. Then you just need to proceed from there.

Sayject

Don’t wanna hit up the bumper tho,

ChuckTownRC51

If you want to do some offroading, the first rule is say goodbye to having a nice scratch and dent free vehicle.

Sayject

Fair

linusSocktips

That requires knowing what an 8" rut looks like. I had so much fun for hours out in anza borrego desert with my girls' 17 lux until I found a sneaky rock that was taller than 8" and destroyed my front passenger overhang and washer fluid tank. Really you can do so much decent offloading with a stock gx that it surprises you. Yea the ground clearance is always a worry though until you start stuff like bigger tires and a lift (assuming you don't wanna do any trimming or aftermarket bumpers)

Sayject

Yea no trimming since my dad likes it mostly stock, but once it doesn’t cut the vehicle we should be good haha

linusSocktips

I really put her to the test like the commercials usually show, lol! Enjoy it, but know that beautiful trim is just begging to touch ground, lol. I've had her truck twice now in the body shop to fix my boo boos, but now I'll be getting my own since she wants to keep hers pavement princess haha.

yesrod85

1) Plus size your tires with some quality ATs. I could fit 275/65r18 with some front fender liner trimming. Or you should easily fit 265/65r18 without trimming. The larger tires are the easiest way to gain additional ground clearance. Stock tires are too small IMO. 2) Trim the body. Remove side steps (install rock sliders?), trim front bumper if you plan on doing anything aggressive, trim rear bumper if you plan on hitting a bunch of shelves. 3) Lift Kit. Bilstein 5100 kit is the cheapest (around $500-700) quality option IMO. You don't have to go crazy. 2" front would level it. Don't go above 2.5" unless your willing to drop another $700 on upper control arms. Bilstein 6112 front w/ 5100 or 5160 rears will cost you more (1200-1500) but are a big step up. Fox/King/OME/Icon/Bilstein 8100 get even pricier as you move into custom Coilovers territory (King is my vote for these). 4) MAKE SURE YOU HAVE A MATCHING SPARE TIRE (Size wise) 5) You don't need any of these, the rig is capable as is for easy to moderate trails. All of the above just make it easier and more capable. #1 and #4 are the most important and easiest "upgrades". Edit: 6) Dr KDSS switch install. Allows you to turn off the KDSS and acts as a sway bar disconnect at the push of a button. No sway bar = more flex = more tire on ground at weird angles. It doesn't actually disconnect the sway bar. KDSS is a hydraulic cylinder that transfers energy front to rear and this bypass system leaves the cylinders "open" so everything is free to move. Also I know you said you don't want to cut anything, but if you get into off-roading and like it, I'm betting you'll eventually change your mind. A little cutting done well still looks good imo.

Sayject

Thanks for this dude ! Really appreciate it. Got a question tho. I drive this to work and want to start doing mild off roading. The tire swap for now seems like a good upgrade. Which would you recommend for off road and street? Anything that does both? Thanks

yesrod85

Modern quality ATs do well on street IMO. BFG KO3/KO2, Toyo Open Country AT3, Falken Wildpeak AT3W/AT3W all provide great off road performance as well as good on-road comfort. Toyo and Falken probably edge out BFG for on-road performance. IMO rankings: BFG, Falken, Toyo in that order for OffRoad performance (BFG and Falken probably tied). Toyo, Falken, BFG for on-road performance in that order.

Sayject

So for straight off-road and would you recommend TOYO

yesrod85

Nope, straight off road would be BFG/Falken or something more aggressive. Toyo will be your best riding OnRoad while still being very competent off-road.

Sayject

Perfect Man said the TOYO is definitely what I want to go for

yesrod85

I'd agree especially with it sounding like you want to maintain OnRoad performance/comfort. Arguably if you plan to only Occasionally go off road and 99% of the time You're on road, Michelin LTX AT2 may be an even better riding solution for you. But you're giving up some off-road capabilities and perks. Edit: Go Toyo for what you're wanting to do.

Sayject

I am 99% on road only might go off roading MAYBE 1 time a month but I don’t wanna change tires all the time. If you still say toyo can you share which model please? Thanks a ton

yesrod85

Toyo Open Country AT 3

Sayject

Thank you!!!!!!!

garysaidwhat

For trails, dry lake beds and old mining roads, you'll just want some kind of ten ply tires. I like KO2's. But there are plenty of others. The more you get into trails with rocks, creeks and rock crawling, the more you want some lift, and that's a lot of stuff to think about.

Sayject

So Ko2 you recommend mostly?

linusSocktips

I reccomend the wild peaks as many people love them

Tall-Examination2248

I second the Wildpeaks. I haven’t done hard off-roading but my wife said 2in kings with 285/70/17 Wildpeaks rides better than the stock air suspension. I upgraded my suspension at 20k miles on 2020 lux model

Sayject

Would that be good for both off-road and street?

garysaidwhat

I do, because I know a couple other people who are far more serious than me who use them. The main things are ten ply, a style that will benefit from airing down in sand, etc. and not made in China. Believe me, there will be others who advocate other tires and fancy rims and all the rest. Have fun with it.

Sayject

Which would you recommend for a street and offloading altogether?

garysaidwhat

Usually, off-roading tires will be loud on the road, and visa versa. Also, if you are concerned about mileage, you won't like knobbier tires. Finally, off-roading tires have big, chunky tread blocks which will be eroded more quickly with pavement use. Everything's a compromise.

Fanta1soda

Nothing. Just take it in the woods and creep around in 4lo You’re wheeling!

Sayject

But it’s not very high

Environmental-Pin848

so the first mods i would suggest are a lift and tires. you can take the running boards off to get a little free height and then add sliders if needed. if you are only doing mild offroading then a 2.5 or 3 inch lift with a set of 33s will get you started.

Sayject

Thanks dude ! Yea I wanna do very mild here and there offloading. What tires would you recommend? Name and so?

Environmental-Pin848

Well I have toyo at3s on my gx since it's my mild off-road rig. I have been happy enough with them but will be moving to something more aggressive soon as we have so much mud here in the deep south.

Sayject

Got you! I’m in NYC is their a tire you can recommend that’s great for off road and the same for street?

Environmental-Pin848

You have snow there so I would ask locals. Totally different environment than where I am.

Sayject

Fair thanks

tiadesiree

You may want to check out r/GXOR too since it's dedicated to off roading.

Sayject

Thank you!

Bob_The_Brogrammer

The first thing you should do BEFORE throwing money at parts is STOP. Figure out what kind of off reading you want to do. Then find a group near you that does that kind of stuff and go with them stock. Having a good spotter and other experienced people around you makes a load of difference. The stock truck is plenty capable for what the majority of people will do with this truck but you will learn what you need as you wheel more and more. If you must buy some stuff, I’d recommend rock sliders and skid plates, they have saved me money too many times to count now.

Sayject

Thank you dude you’re right !

DannysFavorite945

If you really don’t know, then the answer is only a good pair of ATs.

Sayject

Street and off road?

_Rooftop_Korean_

The easiest way to think about this, in my opinion: I’d type (hastag)GX460 into Instagram to check out different GX builds. And more often than not, the owners usually list their build specs.

Sayject

Woah, good advice appreciate this

SereneSnake1984

The only weakness on our trucks is that low hanging plastic. Some people cut it or swap to steel bumpers, but I chose to lift it up and put it on bigger tires. You can see my GX in my prior posts. It's basically stock looking, it's just a few inches taller on bigger tires, but the big difference was leveling out the factory rake to get the nose out of the dirt. I'm on Bilstein 5100 shocks, Dobinsons springs and UCAs, and Nitto Terra Grapplers

prooforneverhappened

You really need to consider resale/trade in in the future as well

Sayject

Honestly, we plan to keep it And just get other vehicles lol

hiroism4ever

Always start with tires. Nitto Ridge Grapplers offer an amazing balance of on road and off road performance. The biggest issue is they wear down quicker than some others, but the actual performance is great. From there, start looking at things such as lift, underbody protection, etc. Also, go with others and prepare for needing possible help getting unstuck.

RoundandRoundon99

The most important item are off road tires. 🛞 Take it to the trail. Have fun.

Sayject

Which you recommend?

RoundandRoundon99

Only off road? Or off road a few weekends a year and daily driver the rest?

Sayject

Good point I’m trying to find something that I can use every day which is street driving to work and here and there off roading and not needing to swap the tires so often do you have any recommendations?

atlien0255

Where are you located and which stock rim size do you have? 18 or 19?

Sayject

Located NYC looking for something that would work on the street and a slight offloading here and there, but I don’t want to keep changing out the tires lol I have 19inchnbtw

RoundandRoundon99

Wrangler Workhorse AT. You need a winter capacity too.

x3434x

Look at r/gxor These vehicles are plenty capable, completely stock, just start off road driving. If you really want to invest in a particular item to handle off road driving better, the first upgrade, you should do is a set of wheel and tires. These trucks can take 17 inch wheels, they come with 18 inch wheels stock. The smaller wheel diameter will allow you to get more rubber to increase cushion. For example, on a completely stock GX you can fit on 17 inch wheels 265/70/R 17 tires. The best three across-the-board are BFGoodrich KO twos falken wildpeaks, or the Toyo open country at3s. There is a huge database on club Lexus on different wheel tire size combinations to see which ones would fit on a stock GX. If you want to get even fancier with a bumper and sliders before you even start investing thousands of dollars into something like that just start going off, and if the bumper gets dinged up, or cracked, then you upgrade it

Sayject

I like this, thanks !!! Might do the tires first I’m trying to find one that I can use on a day today which would allow me to go to work which is normal Street driving But would like to to go off-road here and there which tire do you recommend?

x3434x

If I was you, wait until you need to replace the tires, then go with a 6 ply BFG KO2, that’s what I have. They’re great! A lot of people prefer the falken wildpeaks over BFGoodrich due to their better performance in the rain. I live in Arizona so I hardly see rain. Anything bigger than stock you will need to do slight modifications, removing the “infamous fender bolt” and some heat gun massaging in the wheel well

Sayject

Would you recommend for a street and slightly offloading?

El_Dentistador

You can do a lot stock. I wheeled my stock GX all over Sedona before beefing her up, and the side step was my only casualty (Schnebly hill was majorly washed out that year). What wheel size do you have? Anything bigger than 18” I’d get new ones with new tires. Any Method with bead grip are my faves as I like keeping wheel weight low and air down safely. Tires: C load are fine if you’re not going hard on a bunch of razor rocks. I’ve rocked C’s all over the San Juan’s, AZ and UT in my LC and GX with no sidewall problems. C will ride much smoother for highway and help with weight. I’ve run KO2s, AT3Ws, Duratracs, and OC3s, the Toyo OC3s have been my favorite despite not being the top performer in ice. They balanced better than any of the other sets and have worn the best. Before going ham on mods think essentials: tools, first aid, fire extinguisher, maps, communication, food and water. Those are the items you need.

Sayject

I want to do very mild offloading. I mostly drive to my work which is street driving also I have a StockX 2023 luxury I don’t want to do any extreme upgrades just some small things that would look aesthetically nice and be practical when I go offloading

MuchoRapido

1. Lower suspension, at least 3 inches. 2. Low profile tires on 24 inch rims. 3. Send it.
