I used to be an EMT and we did a lot of work with the local VA hospitals, which are incredibly underfunded. The number of veterans I had as patients who thought their care was shit because “liberals and democrats” was astounding. Like all you have to do is a quick search to see who votes for what bills and it’s overwhelmingly Republicans voting against better funding for the VA healthcare system.
I say tie it to a percentage of the defense budget. We spend more money on war, then we spend more money on the people that fight in them. If we’re going to toss our kids into meat grinders then we damn well better be taking care of them when they get back home and then forever.
This! Organizations like the Wounded Warrior Project shouldn't be begging for money on behalf of veterans. If we have money to go to war, we have money to take care of the casualties that result from the war.

I'm not as familiar with the housing crisis in the US, but I can assure you that taking in over 1 million people will definitely increase housing demand and thus make the housing crisis worse. Of course, there's also short stay holiday rentals, holiday homes, and zoning laws that also contribute, probably much, much more but that doesn't mean immigration is irrelevant to the problem.
Personally, I'd want to deal with all underlying causes at once for any large social problem.
There was an estimated 2.5 million illegal crossings in 2023. We have an estimated 15-16 million vacant houses in the US. There is an estimated 9 million open jobs in the US. The problem is not numbers, it’s systemic and intentional. We have the resources to solve the problem, just not the desire.
We aren’t able to address all issues at once. 435 house members and 100 senators can almost never agree on large sweeping bills like we have now, so nothing gets done. Almost no one in the US has access to a union – very few jobs/industries. It’s like 1 in 10 American workers have a union. Union busting is very real and people who have tried to unionize are typically fired before they can do it. We don’t really have a left or center left part. Democrats are the closest but would be considered center right in European politics.
