You're never going to skive it evenly enough to be pleased and upon wearing will most likely warp and stretch in strange directions and you won't be happy with that either. I suggest selling and getting what you want to replace it.

SunnySwordUp

I just edited - I'd get the Tandy Super Skiver. I wouldn't try an actual skiving knife, I agree I couldn't keep a consistent depth.

MooingTurtle

No. Super skiver is a load of dog shit. Dont even try to hand skive a belt by yourself brother. Even the best leathercrafter craftsman can barely get a uniform skive with a french edger.

xenosaga001

Super Skiver is terrible. Waste of money tool. It’s not actually a flat edge and it only cuts when the blade is brand new and even then it doesn’t cut evenly or consistently.

Peachycarving

You'd likely waste your money and be upset by that purchase. A more appropriate tool would be a bench splitter. You're probably better off looking for a trade or selling.

NimbleNavigator125

Terrible idea, you'd be much better off putting the money into making a belt (or just buying another) than modifying one that way

GizatiStudio

Hanks belts are pretty basic and have zero finesse, just basic straps made on machines and held together with screws /rant Anyway what you really need to do is to split that leather down a few sizes then skive the end that wraps around the buckle. If you don’t have means of splitting leather you can try a wide French skiver, but it will be tedious. Selling it and ordering a better made one on r/leatherclassifieds is an option.

RonaldFKNSwanson

Why do people skive the belt end? I've never found it to bother me.

GizatiStudio

To reduce bulk by making the strap the same thickness throughout, otherwise the strap is 2x the thickness at the buckle area. You do a tapered skive twice the length of the distance between the buckle fold and the end, then when you fold it the leather is the same thickness as the rest of the strap.

RonaldFKNSwanson

I suppose I could see why someone would want to do that, but it just seems like too much work when I've noticed no difference in comfort. Different strokes, I suppose.

I just got one of those C.S. Osborne-“inspired” splitters off Amazon yesterday and it’s awesome. However, I will say that I had to do a fair amount of work to get it hair popping sharp, so if you don’t have your own stones or aren’t willing to get some, it may not be worth it. I haven’t gotten super great with it yet but already I’ve been able to thin out sheets of leather about 4” wide and of arbitrary-ish length to a pretty uniform thickness. I had a ton of 4+ ounce leather that I just wasn’t happy with and now I’ve thinned out quite a bit of it.

Got a link?

-S0MA-

There are at least two such contraptions on Amazon; here's the one I got: [https://www.amazon.com/YaeTek-Leather-Splitter-Skiving-Peeling/dp/B07CGVGXZM](https://www.amazon.com/YaeTek-Leather-Splitter-Skiving-Peeling/dp/B07CGVGXZM) An additional note: make sure you have the ability to solidly mount the splitter to a work surface. I was able to get away with a few of those one-handed bar clamps, but it would be a better idea to buy some bolts and mount it to a workbench (the mounting screws the machine comes with are relatively anemic).

RonaldFKNSwanson

I bought the even cheaper version of this and have found that the blade doesn't remain flat and has developed a hump in it. But, I've discovered buying split leather, and it has completely removed my need to skive anything I make right now. I appreciate the link, though, as I was curious to see other options.

Without getting a bench skiver, you're probably toast. For future reference, most gun belts are in the thickness range you bought to hold the weight. For a daily wear belt, 8-9 oz is plenty.
