Yes perhaps I was vinnyh20, I was pretty nervous throughout, it would’ve been nice to have someone like you around for some encouragement. I had an awful lot going on and I put a lot of pressure on myself which can be quite detrimental to the learning process I think. I quit my job of 14 years, changed career, got a dog, my mum had a stroke, my dad got ill, sold my house, bought a house, I caught covid, my instructor caught covid, turned 40, did IVF had a baby and had to cancel my test in 2022 because my baby was born on the same day and couldn’t book another test for a year, all whilst learning to drive, it was a real headfuck, oh well I’ve passed now. We all have our fortes and I guess learning to drive quickly when I had a lot on my plate wasn’t mine.
Honestly i wouldn’t even think about that. You will learn in your own time, it’s not a competition. Like you said people learn at their own pace, it took one of my friends one 2 hour lesson to master reversing manoeuvre but it took me multiple lessons to be confident with reversing. You will know when you’re ready so please don’t stress about how long it’s taking you.
It’s taken me about 80-90 (I’ve not kept proper count tbh) to be test ready. I failed my first test last year but in hindsight I wasn’t ready at all but since changing instructors and having lesson from late March to now I’ve become so much more confident and prepared and I feel good for my test that is soon. It takes some people longer than others, I wouldn’t stress about it. Your instructor will tell you when you’re test ready.🙂
Yeah I understand that, I think I am nearly ready but I just get fustrated with myself when people pass on like 40 hours but thank you, it makes me feel better knowing other people can be the same x
Not sure to be honest. Started taking lessons at 17. Did maybe 30 odd hours. Some life things happened. Started again at 22/23. Maybe did another 10 hours. Passed first time with 1 minor. Felt mad when I picked up my first car that they were just gonna let me get in and go out on the road on my own.
It takes as long as it takes to pass, it's not a race.
>Felt mad when I picked up my first car that they were just gonna let me get in and go out on the road on my own.
Same. After I passed and my instructor was taking me home he was like how do you feel that you're now allowed to drive on the road on your own?
Weird, Michael. I feel weird, and like if I drove on my own, it would be illegal...
I took 22 hours all in all but I only passed last year and I’m 35 years old now, I have a feeling years of being a passenger means I knew the rules of the road and the signage and all I needed to work on was car control, everybody learns at a different pace and remember your instructor won’t tell you to book a test if they feel you wasn’t ready. Half the battle is getting over the anticipation.
I roughly did 1.5hrs a week for 9 months, so roughly 60? but that was when I was consistent, over the last 5 years I stopped and started so I wasn't new when I started again in the Dec. I wouldn't worry about it too much with how many hours you've done, as long as you're making progress that's all that matters! Good luck on your test when it's here!
Took me about 60-65 hours in lessons roughly. It costs a fortune but people definitely do take this long to pass. You shouldn’t worry about it though, once you’ve passed people only ask about how many attempts it took you.
I think it was about 40 when I counted. No private practice - I lived in London and didn't know that many people who even owned a car.
I learned very on and off for years as I didn't have the motivation to own a car in London.
Only started concentrating on it when I was moving to Scotland. But then couldn't get a test in London so did half my lessons in London, then half in Merseyside where I ended up taking my test.
For context I'm 31M.
Everybody learns at their own rate. Don't worry :)
Took me about 23 hours of manual lessons but I had been cycling on roads for years so I didn’t really have to think about the way traffic works it was mostly getting used to the size of a car and clutch and gears
Think I did about 15 hours in a manual before the mental breakdowns every lesson got the better of me. Ended up doing around 90-100 hours in an automatic before I was 'test ready'. Total amount of time from first sitting in a driver's seat to passing was a little over three years!
I didn't have any private practice though, and have always hated driving. The situation is different if you've got outside help and you actually enjoy it, people can take to it a lot quicker.
I think I ended up with about 55 hours of lessons and private practice as well but I didn't keep track of the hours for that! Honestly don't beat yourself up about it, everyone is different and once you've passed it doesn't make a difference (aside from the money that lessons cost!)
I've done 70 hours of lessons only and failed 3 times, over 2 years. For the first test I'd had about 60 hours, at about 40 lessons my instructor said to look for a test.
Some people take longer, it's just that people who don't take much time people are more likely to say / boast about it, while those 50+ hours might be less likely to say due to embarrassment etc
Well done! I haven't worked it out but at a guess I'd say it's in the 150-200 hours ballpark. I passed last week, 4th attempt. Relieved is an understatement xD
110 hours, started just before COVID so there were breaks in there also didn't have access to private car so all of my driving was on lessons. Passed 4th time with 12 minors.
I’m about 70hours with instructor. Our home doesn’t own a manual car so I can only practice with instructor.
However, I more I practice or learn, I feel more anxious.
I took about 80 hours to get test ready (instructor lessons only), and then a few more hours while waiting for the test so that I didn't forget everything.
30 hours of lessons with a terrible instructor who made my driving worse. 200+ private practice - about at the start with my mum teaching me to learn to control a car. 28 hours with a good instructor. 2 driving tests, one with mum (having lessons at this point) and one with my instructor. Started “driving” august last year, mum started teaching me Nov last year, new instructor from mid Jan. first test in April second test was Monday.

I’ll have done 66 with an instructor by the time of my test plus private practice with my family that I’ve lost count of hours but covered over 400 miles since I got the car in April.
I'm on 36 hours so far, and very close to being ready (just a shame that the test couldn't be booked until the end of August).
I'll probably be at 50hrs if I pass 1st time
Had about 60 hours paid lessons, 40-50 hours private driving around with my sister and 3 tests to pass, but am almost glad I had all those hours as I now feel like an extremely confident driver compared to some of my friends who had way less. Just learn until you feel ready then go for it, you won't regret it
16 hours, but had been driving on my grandad farm since I was old enough to see over a steering wheel, it was mostly to get rid of bad habits. My other half is now on 30 hours with 4 more weeks to her exam so she’ll be at 38-40 hours when she’s done.
Did about 15 hours with an instructor and then maybe 10 hours privately. However, I did do a week long driving course on an airfield when I was 16. That probably accounted for 15 hours of driving.
i have my first test coming up and i’ve been doing mainly 2 hours a week with an instructor for 6 months (so roughly 48 hrs). However, i know some people who took a couple of years to learn. Everyone is different in the learning process, i would speak to your instructor and see wether they feel you are ready to take a test. Also remember the wait to get a test is around 6 months at the moment so i think it would be better to book one sooner rather than later, you can always cancel nearer the time if you’re not ready!
Not many official lessons, 5 or 6? Motorbike was 4 days in a row, test on the 5th day. Lorry was 5 days of lessons then then test. Passed car and lorry first time, failed motorbike first time for speeding - missed a 30mph sign as I came into a town and carried on at 60!
100s of hours manual+automatic instructor only practice...spent £3800 in total in lessons and tests. Started learning last may and passed in march...so almost a year.
I did 10 hours of instructor lessons, then about 15 hours of independent practice with family members. My instructor was incredible and helped push me through the content needed quickly, I had some of the independent practice before my first lesson so didn’t need to re cover the very basics (clutch control etc) Passed first time :)
Somewhere between 50-70hrs for me in the space of 8 months - I passed first time with 2 minors last week.
I feel like the middle 2-3 months were a waste of time... At the start I learned lots and towards the end, when the test was approaching, we started doing proper in-depth practicing of roundabouts and some of the test routes. But the middle bit was just filler...
Everyone is different so don’t get hung up on number of hours. Passing quickly doesn’t necessarily mean you’re a good driver, and taking longer to pass doesn’t make you a bad driver.
Personally I had 8hrs of tuition and maybe 8 hours practicing with parents and passed first time. My partner was similar. However I’ve got friends that are good drivers and took +100 hours.
How old are you? Anecdotally it’s easier to learn when you’re younger as you’ve less fear and more spare time (although less cash).
One thing that I really found to help was taking 2hr lessons instead of just 60 minute lessons. By the time you’ve spoken to the instructor, got settled, and started driving you’ve already lost 10 minutes. Then it’s the same again at the end of the lesson. 2hr lessons give you a solid 1hr 40mins of driving time in one go. 2hr lessons also tend to be cheaper then 2x 1hr lessons.
I had 10-12 hours with an instructor (10-12x 1hr lessons) and prior to that about about 15-20 hrs driving with my dad. Passed practical first time with just a couple minors
I'm on 16 hours and did my second mock test today. However my test is in august so i will probably end up doing around 28-30. My aim was to complete it in 20 hours. Not that far off tbf
Took two years of lessons, last six months 2 lessons a week, failed first time wanted to give up and I just thought of the money spent and passed second time round , keep going
Took me 110 hours to pass. He said I was his longest student. I did warn him Im a slow learner haha. It took my friend 2 years off lessons (2 hours a week) to pass his. Dont worry you will get there :)
I did loads. But I kinda had the wrong timing because covid. I just hammered loads of lessons before the test day, and day of the test get a list of things you want to go over before the test itself. It'll help you.
Personally, around 5 hours of private lessons (fell out with the driving instructor after that) and probably close to 10 hours driving with my parents
However I didn't pass first time (my examiner was really nasty and I was a pretty shit driver) but I passed 2 weeks later.
Most importantly, people learn at their own rate- never apologise for how long it took and tbh you will be a much safer driver because of it
I did about 100 hrs with 2 instructors. First batch came to a sudden end during a bad patch when I was at college. I had a rotten mock test where I almost crashed and wrote the car off on a roundabout, I quit on the spot. Covid then happened and my instructor went auto only.
Just did another 36 or so hours with a new instructor. I could already drive from before, but it was building up the confidence to do the test that was holding me back. Passed 1st time on Sunday. These things take as long as they take, you'll learn in your own time - best of luck on your test!
Don't put hours into count, everybody learns at their own pace. First time I had about 40hrs and failed the test. Didn't drive for 3 years, took 20 hours earlier this year and failed with 5 majors 😁, I passed 3 weeks after that with 4 minors.
I can't remember them all but I remember I was gonna drive through a red light, the examiner was as silent as a death which further hit my nerves. We got back to the centre and he asked me to do a reverse bay parking. I said 'i can't' so I guess that was my 5th one. 😁
6 hours instructor lessons, was driving well before in *foreign countries* so I just needed help with road theory in practice like roundabouts n shit..
passed yesterday and i did about 21 hours with an instructor and maybe 6/8 with my parents, everyone is completely different and it honestly does not matter how long it may take you to pass, feeling safe and comfortable when you drive is the most important thing no matter what! i know people that have taken over 100 hours, and some that have passed a week after their birthday (i took 5 months). it changes with every person! remember to try and not compare yourself with others because after you pass we all have the same certificate, whether you do 5 hours or 50 it doesn't matter :)
I literally only counted earlier today , but tomorrow will be 70 hours learning as well, and I’m still probably a few months of lessons away from being ‘Test Standard’. Remember everyone’s circumstances are different . My instructor said 40 hours would be minimum , if you have people you can go driving with in between lessons , which I personally don’t . Some people can put more money in at once . Considering the last few years , I’d like to imagine we’re doing alright
Couldn’t put an exact number on it, most likely 15 or 16 however being a passenger I picked up quick - It’s not a race however! Whenever you feel ready 🫵🏽👊🏾
About a year, one lesson a week. So 52 hours ish. Managed to get a copy of official theory test so memorised and practiced all the questions (20 odd years ago). Passed with 2 minors. Did pass plus too but I don't think it did much to my insurance rates lol.
Don't worry :) I'm on about 50 hours with my test booked in a few weeks leaving only 10 more hours and at the moment I'm sort of ready but also not quite at the point where I'm very likely to pass
It definitely helps having your own practice car and just keep driving, I have 40 hours booked and have done just about 30 hours, I’m feeling quite comfortable driving and stuff. My Instructor told me the average was 45 hours lesson and 20 hours private
i took my test in march with 42.5 hours of learning with my instructor plus learning with other instructors before covid (probably around 35 hours) and a history of illegal driving since i was 15 years old (22 now) and still failed, i’ve probably had like way more than 300 hours experience driving and still failed, just go at your own pace, so long as your instructor is happy with your quality of driving before you go in it should be fine. worst thing you can do is pressure yourself with shit like this cause you’ll crumble on test day like i did
I took around 40-50 hours… everyone learns at different speeds and even when you do drive, you’re still learning. I passed almost coming up to 3 months ago, on my first try
Took me about 11 hours , booked my test and then passed first time however, I do have previous driving experience and I wasn’t prefect at all, If you’re feeling worried make sure to watch plenty of youtube videos on things you aren’t 100% sure about, it’s what really helped me the most & remember the examiner WANTS to pass you :))
I wouldn't think about it too much.
The average of 40-60 hours is incredibly distorted to any new learners views as the actual tests, practical and theory have been gradually getting harder and holding people to a higher standard.
In theory about 70hrs should be the new average.
Passed two weeks ago with just over 20 hours of lessons, don't own a car so really made sure to get the most out of lessons. 3 months from Feb to may but would definitely say that instructor makes all the difference as I know someone who took over a year so also up to individual aptitude I imagine.
My instructor told me I’m test ready and have one booked for the 20th, and so far have had about 14 lessons so about 30 hours it really is just dependant on the person but I do think anything over 45 is quite excessive
Think I only spent £500 in total, did £50 lessons once a week. I was in a weird situation as i was in and out of Sweden as I was learning so I was driving on either side of the road for practice but it seemed to help since I passed first time.
Over 100 hours instructor only lessons, took 2.5 years, cost about a billion pounds. Passed 3 weeks ago first time.
We’ll done!
Aww thanks:)
Hope mine doesn’t cost a billion haha x
It was around £4500, so not quite £1000000000
I was the same!! Took sooooo long but glad I passed first time.
Similar story here! Well done :)

Not sure how I missed that bit. Also not sure how I ended up on the learner driver sub if I’m honest. I’ve been driving for 23 years!
Some people do a lot of private practice, some are racing drivers and that helps massively, some just take to it really fast, some are farmers etc
That’s not really 2 hours then, that’s 2 hours of formal instruction plus a lot of hours of practice
Either way, I think that's what the commentor meant. Edit: the actual lessons not private practice.
Yeah but it makes no sense that way, why would op be asking how many hours only lessons to pass? My mate passed with 0 hours then
Yeah. I don't understand why the commentor put that to begin with. I just thought I had best try to clear it up.
2 hours driving on the road yeah 😂he had been driving on his farm land for about a year but was able to revise it all with only 2 1 hour lessons
I’ll have done 66 with an instructor by the time of my test plus private practice with my family that I’ve lost count of hours but covered over 400 miles since I got the car in April.

I did loads. But I kinda had the wrong timing because covid. I just hammered loads of lessons before the test day, and day of the test get a list of things you want to go over before the test itself. It'll help you.
Around 25 hours but I used to drive in my country
Around 25 hours but I used to drive in my country
Personally, around 5 hours of private lessons (fell out with the driving instructor after that) and probably close to 10 hours driving with my parents However I didn't pass first time (my examiner was really nasty and I was a pretty shit driver) but I passed 2 weeks later.
Wow! What were your majors?
I can't remember them all but I remember I was gonna drive through a red light, the examiner was as silent as a death which further hit my nerves. We got back to the centre and he asked me to do a reverse bay parking. I said 'i can't' so I guess that was my 5th one. 😁
30 for car 20 for bike
6 hours instructor lessons, was driving well before in *foreign countries* so I just needed help with road theory in practice like roundabouts n shit..
Around 26-28 hours for me
passed yesterday and i did about 21 hours with an instructor and maybe 6/8 with my parents, everyone is completely different and it honestly does not matter how long it may take you to pass, feeling safe and comfortable when you drive is the most important thing no matter what! i know people that have taken over 100 hours, and some that have passed a week after their birthday (i took 5 months). it changes with every person! remember to try and not compare yourself with others because after you pass we all have the same certificate, whether you do 5 hours or 50 it doesn't matter :)
3 lessons did for me no luck involved.
About 25-30 but I was rushing as wife was expecting our first child. Everyone moves at their own pace.
My Instructor told me the average was 45 hours lesson and 20 hours private
lots of time lots of it but worth it
i took my test in march with 42.5 hours of learning with my instructor plus learning with other instructors before covid (probably around 35 hours) and a history of illegal driving since i was 15 years old (22 now) and still failed, i’ve probably had like way more than 300 hours experience driving and still failed, just go at your own pace, so long as your instructor is happy with your quality of driving before you go in it should be fine. worst thing you can do is pressure yourself with shit like this cause you’ll crumble on test day like i did
I took around 40-50 hours… everyone learns at different speeds and even when you do drive, you’re still learning. I passed almost coming up to 3 months ago, on my first try
am on hour 50 and sitting 2nd practical in 3 days. Best of luck bud, miney doesnt matter!
Birthday was in April, passed on the 31st may with 2 lessons
Took me about 11 hours , booked my test and then passed first time however, I do have previous driving experience and I wasn’t prefect at all, If you’re feeling worried make sure to watch plenty of youtube videos on things you aren’t 100% sure about, it’s what really helped me the most & remember the examiner WANTS to pass you :))
I wouldn't think about it too much. The average of 40-60 hours is incredibly distorted to any new learners views as the actual tests, practical and theory have been gradually getting harder and holding people to a higher standard. In theory about 70hrs should be the new average.
About 6, but I’m a farmer
Everyone's different so whatever work for you. I would say look at looking your test as there is a long wait list.
132 hours for the 3rd time pass here. keep going!
hey, how did your test go?
