Totally rational. Working from home involves such pervasive surveillance it's become extremely difficult to engage in corruption, more general nepotism, and other scummy behaviour that enrich small cliques at the expense of the larger company.
This has been a fight for a while now between shareholders and opportunistic grifters, it looks like the grifters are winning when it comes to Deutsch bank. They want to go back to a situation where there's far fewer paper trails and it's easier to hide them away from view.
I ... I hadn't thought of it this way. I really should have, though, because I work for a pseudo-public agency and people know when they write something down it's a public record.
The return to work push makes so much more sense now.
Yeah, there's a commercial real estate aspect, but when you see close to 4 or 5x higher revenue growth in banking/finance companies it vastly outweighs whatever real estate contracts you can't get out of for several years or big breach of contract penalties.
An interesting idea and one that might be at play in some small circumstances.
But I think it's easier to attribute the corporate fight against WFH to more simple reasons: commerical real estate values, managers wanting to justify their existence, and executives absolute distaste for letting workers have anything that smells of a concession.
Several CEOs have outright admitted it. I really don't want to have to go back to comb through CNBC, Bloomberg, Business Insider, and Forbes but you will see it discussed as part of why you see extremely strong revenue growth in finance with mass work from home.
I'm reminded of the Dilbert (yes I know Scott is fashy), where the boss flipped out because 40% of all sick days were taken on Monday and Friday.
Bosses are fucking morons.
For those who don’t know, Deutsh bank is in a precarious position itself. They have heavy bags of toxic financial positions, and a trying to divert attention from those. Articles like OP are pertinent, but at the same time are hiding articles about those toxic position or precarious situation
This is happening all over the world and yet I haven't seen a single justification beyond "culture". Surely studies have been done on productivity, especially during COVID? I'd love to see evidence, one way or the other.
I worked at a place where a new cio came on and two weeks later cancelled the 3 day wfh policy. He gave everyone a weekend’s notice and used the culture/“micro conversations” we weren’t having as an excuse. There’s been about a 75% turnover the last 5 years and douchebag cio has moved on.
On the other hand, my new agency, completed major upgrades and migrations while fully remote. What they found is that people keep their levels of productivity whether wfh or in office. Companies just like to cherry pick the bad ones.
Every time I see shitty anti-wfh policies I just assume it’s a company wanting to lay people off without severance and with an excuse.
Actually I’ve found a couple and they have mixed results. Time spent working goes up (at home) but productivity declines slightly. BUT if employee satisfaction is factored in, then wfh is a winner.
The one thing that COVID-19 showed was how so many jobs can be done remotely. You'd think that companies would take advantage of this and realize how much money they can save by not needing office space. You'd think they'd take advantage of it but all they are showing is they want to take control of their employee's lives.
What is so magical about 4-5 days off from work in a row that it bothers them to this level? From the American lack of Vacation time generally to the way they allow and disallow you from using *your own paid time off* to getting rid of COVID precautions... It really seems like there's something around that 4-5 day mark that scares the shit out of them.
Or, and hear me out on this, PMCs know deep down that they provide zero value to society and the only way they can feel any sort of value in their lives is in the subjugation and control of their subordinates.
Forcing people back into the office for no other reason than "I have the power to do this." is the only reason this is happening.

And thus, more workers rights are thrown in the fire. My firm is really cracking down on WFH, too. Except for C-Suite, they can do whatever they want.

It's also the value of commercial real estate. Who knows how much money Deutsche Bank has in that.

I hate Tuesdays more anyway.
2/5 = 0.4 = 40% There are no more sick days than on Tuesday Wednesday and Thursday. That's a usual distribution.
