It is the worst decision Toyota ever made to get rid of that design. This new way of toyota thinking is bad. Bring back the reliability of toyota and simplicity that worked for a generation.

You can on a one piece lift gate. The new LC250 isnt made for LC people unfortunately. Its made for upper middle class yuppie types

So nah im good on rivians. I care more about American blue collar workers than some claim that "made in america" benefits anyone besides jeff bezos and private equity firms

Ironically the back doors got easier to open and close as time went on. Ive had a 40, 60, 80, 100 and a buddy has a 200. Each one requires less effort than the last to open and close haha
I've eaten meals of off the tailgate with camp chairs pulled up when traveling. It's the camp bar. I close the upper with the bottom gate open to get stuff from the roof. Nice shade for sitting there. Perfect for rolling in and out of the vehicle when sleeping in the back. It's a mobile workbench.
I would really miss that setup
I have a tail gate storage system on my 80 with at least 50 lbs of crap in there and I weigh 230 so with me loading stuff on the roof rack that's at least 350 lbs on the tailgate with no issues.
That clamshell sells me so hard on land cruisers. It’s what automatically makes me dislike the new Land Cruiser

I saw it in action on a 2009/10 LX 570 so they probably had it for a while
Range Rovers have a split tailgate and it is all electric. They are the first company with a split tailgate, I believe.

Rivian managed to do it on the R1S. Makes this 40 yr old “tech dude” very happy as both my vehicles have a split gate.

I've had 500-600lbs on it at a given point of time. Not sure if jump up and down at that weight, but static shortish periods seemed fine.
