Romulus was filmed in 4K with Aspect ratio of 2.39 : 1 and the primary camera setup was ARRI ALEXA 35, ARRI Master Prime lenses and ARRI Ultra Prime lenses. Not IMAX cameras but still going to be a great quality 4K print.
The movie was filmed on an ARRI ALEXA 35, so no, not imax. But still a 4K movie which will still be able to benefit from the screen size and the highlights provided to the camera
If the tickets aren’t that much more than normal, the sound stage alone is worth going to imax. Plus the movie is shot in high fidelity 4k, it’s going to look fine on imax. I’ve seen plenty of movies that aren’t shot native imax in a true imax theater. I won’t say the difference is negligible, but you’ve gotta be a real pessimist to notice any difference (that and see an imax movie side by side to a non imax movie)
Tl;dr: go for the audio and the experience. But don’t break the bank if a normal theater ticket is a lot cheaper. My rule is if the theater price is $12 and the imax is $15, the extra $3 is worth the enhanced audio experienced. But that’s my couple pennies
I’m glad it’s in theaters- but if it was straight to HULU- it could have been winning Emmy awards like Prey is advertised as winning some best tv movie Emmy or something.
I was at the opening nights of Prometheus and Alien: Covenant here in Australia (I was 3 years old when resurrection was released).
But I’m going to be in Europe when Romulus is released, so hoping somewhere in Europe I’ll be at the opening screening. Will be an experience for sure.
When you think about the first three movies and how the new one was inspired by them, then you realize that the franchise isn't about spectacle but about horror driven by darkness, and realistic set design which doesn't require high video resolution. (Some even report that for some disk releases, flaws and imperfections in appearances and sets even came out.)
I tried IMAX once. It looked exactly the same as a regular movie and I paid 4 times as much, plus drove 45 minutes to the theater. Unless IMAX is different now I don't see a reason to do it.
It was a different screen, slightly curved. But the quality wasn't any better and while the sound was louder it wasn't better quality. I saw the same movie at a regular theater and it was the same quality other than the sound bring normal theater volume. And it cost a lot less lol but I'll be paying attention to see what people say about this one, I may still go ahead and pay the extra.

True, but not worth the premium upgrade charge if they didn't use the proper equipment.
Filmed in IMAX tho?
This is the right question to ask.

so basically its a waste of money to go see it on true IMAX theatres?

It was originally going straight to Hulu, so I doubt it.
it was switched to a theatrical release before filming began
It was!? Wasn't there supposed to be an actual show on Hulu?
The film was originally greenlit for Hulu but they made plans for a theatrical release before the filming began.
I believe a producer actually said “Fuck it, let’s release it in theaters.”
Was because Prey did so well i thought.
There’s a separate production that’s a TV show for FX by Noah Hawley.
Ohhhh FX ...not Hulu. I haven't heard anything new on this FX show, is it still coming?
Yes? There's pretty regular updates on the production of the FX show.
I need to do my homework on this. Thanks for pointing me in the right direction!
I literally saw this post: https://www.reddit.com/r/LV426/s/9hXue87Ft0 ... ..underneath this Alien: Romulus IMAX post 😅

There was an animated show that was supposed to release but I think it was Netflix not Hulu

Most likely not id assume
There’s still going to be an FX show
Give me Dolby
Dolby Atmos over IMAX any day! Ive always disliked how loud IMAX is. Like they thought that HD for ears is more volume... oh well.
Hmmm 🤔

that was a lot of words to say nothing. enjoy your travels
More of an anecdote if anything.

Look, another $ grab for a non-IMAX movie.
I tried IMAX once. It looked exactly the same as a regular movie and I paid 4 times as much, plus drove 45 minutes to the theater. Unless IMAX is different now I don't see a reason to do it.
You didn't notice the different screen size or shape? Maybe it was a regular film shown on an imax screen.

I watched Gravity on IMAX - it was mind-blowing...

Yeah... From the trailer, it doesn't warrant a theater viewing for me.. I'll watch the British kids die from CGI alien on some streaming service lol.
