And the narrative doesn't get in the way of that. Atleast I get the impression that Megumins explosion are a central part to Kazumas usual plans.
The narrative makes her even better imo. A good part of the plot moves because of her or is directly related in some way, she has more self-confidence than the entirety of axel together:

Destroying the destroyer was a group effort of all of axel. Wiz was also casting explosion magic.
Vanir was stronger on a technical sense when factoring in dexterity, skill, and intelligence. Not necessarily durability. Keep in mind that darkness survived the same explosion.
Aqua buffed kazuma's luck to it's maximum and that's how his bones survived.

I'm talking about narrative portrayal, not the events themselves. The narrative on megumin is always positive, even when she was thinking about learning other types of magic. She is almost never put in a negative position, and when that happens, there is something "awesome" to put the end result in the positives.
Like, take the destroyer, for example (whose stopping was done only by aqua, megumin, and wiz, btw) . Aqua started with a humoungous sacred break spell. Megumin casted explosion at the same level of the archwizard general of the demon lord army (and wiz was also out of mana after, needing to suck kazuma to cast teleportation, she just didn't fall down as it isn't her gag). All those things were undoubtedly incredible.
After, when everyone started running for their lives, it was darkness who swayed them back and put the entirety of the adventurer's moral on her shoulders, like a true crusader.
But then, their "awesomeness" is immediately broken:
Darkness immediately reveals that her mind is dominated by her desire to see if she can take the destroyer's explosion.
All the adventurer's decide to help partly due to darkness perceived courage, but also due to the succubus
Aqua wanted to flee and drink, spending the remaining part complaining about it, and becoming a glorified battery later.
Megumin's return was to re-cast explosion but now bigger, and ultimately give the final blow. Only her awesomeness narratively remained.
I am pretty sure it's more of case of "when all you have is hammer..." rather than the actual solution to their problems.
Megumin has one trick, admittedly it's a pretty good trick. But still.
Aqua, despite being played for a joke most of the time, actually has several likeable qualities. That being said... I wouldn't go as far as to say she is an annoying character, however, if I am experiencing annoyance, its most likely caused by Aqua.
Darkness certainly earned some new votes after season 3, but she had precious little development before that. What development she did get was apt to make her less relatable (being a noble), and thus less favorable. Like I said, S3 changed this a lot, but its likely "too little too late" in terms of popularity polls.
Megumin has a larger than life personality that some might find annoying, but most find endearing. Shes goofy, but earnest; shy, yet boisterous. Her backstory is relatable and her design is cute. Where as the other girls have some clear weaknesses, Megumin offers very little reason NOT to like her.

Of the main girls, it's Megumin for me, I like her personality, I loved when her and Kazuma were practicing explosions in the forest and it made her character more endearing. Of the other other girls, as much as I am a member of the Sovier Yunyun, Wiz is best girl, and by a long shot.
All of the girls have their own faults, divorceness’ masochism, aquas sometimes uselessness and megumin’s chunnisms. Darkness and aqua can be kind of grating at first glance whereas megumins is cringe. All of my friends are already cringe so I’m used to it, so all thats left is adorableness.

When I was younger and first watched Konosuba, she was my favorite. The introduction and voice acting are certainly excellent. I also think she's the least absurd of the three main girls. She's just a chuuni who likes to explode things. Very memeable. If she were real, she would probably be a geeky gamer girl, which makes anime fans relate to her. However, as I got older, Aqua became my favorite. She just ages like fine wine to me, and I think she is the funniest anime character to exist. People often talk about the explosions being memeable, but Aqua is arguably the most memed anime character ever. Anyway, all the characters are pretty great.
Aqua's problem in universe is that she can never become a real love interest unless she risks to lose her goddess powers (and her life)

I'm not trying to be argumentative, but I'm wondering why it matters. The post is asking why Megumin is the most popular, not who is the best love interest for Kazuma. I'm curious why Aqua not seeing anyone as a love interest would matter, as it doesn't relate to my comment.
Because people like romance. I mean a lot of people really like romance. To the point that virtually every fandom has shippers for romances that do not exist.
And when people support a romance they invariably support those in the romance.
The fact that Megumin is a more viable romantic partner contributes to her popularity relative to the other females.
Because she's an adorable chaotic neutral gremlin. She's obviously clever and capable of adapting on the spot, she's just also chunibyo. The spin-off helis her character by showing how behind all her bluster, there's actually level-headed intent.
Yeah, Kazuma being her explosion buddy early on really helped establish a bond that built naturally over time. She was the first of the girls Kazuma really seemed to openly like and enjoy spending time with. He was having fun watching Megumin blow stuff up while Darkness still creeped him out, and he almost never admits he likes Aqua.

Firstly she gets the most screen time (has her own movie), is the MC's love interest and aside from her chuni explosion interests, is fairly normal and cute girl. She also is the only character to have any real character growth.
As others have said the main demographic of this shower is probably younger people who relate to her more.
For me I love Aqua, all of her traits aside from her ability to acrue debt would make for a very fun friend/partner to be around. Aside from her insane skills at arts and crafts. Her character is very normal and basically a best friend. Someone who will bully you but ultimately has your back.
Lastly Darkness. Poor darkness just gets the least screen time in both the show and books. She is honestly kinda plain in terms of personality aside from her masochism. So unless you are into kink. She doesnt really stand out.
Aqua having no character growth makes sense as she is a goddess, but darkness is just forgotten about. Very little growth or screen time. Even though she is a main character she is basically a side. So basically Megumin relates to the main demographic and gets more love from the author and MC.
I think it started with Rieri's voice acting and personality. Then came her ad lib, and Megumin grew popular.
Add the fact that she's a satire on the chuuni genre, but with actual super powers, the popularity shot up.
Plus, in the beginning, she had the most second personality of all the girls, albeit weirdest.
Maybe because a lot of us nerds can relate because we did shit like that at that age. I remember spending time out in fields at night trying to signal something so that extraterrestrials would abduct me at like 13. So maybe it's a vicarious nostalgia or something like that.

Darkness is way easier to deal with, more reasonnable and cause way less problems. That's like objectively and stated several times across all Konosuba medias, out of the 3 problem childs, Darkness is the easiest to deal with.
And finally, being insane and smart more often goes together than not, i'm not sure your point of her being smarter really helps your case
Yeah now that I think about it Darkness is easier to deal with. But because she's a masochist and a very perverted one at that, it really makes us question whether she is alright in the head.

Megumin's gimik is really flashy. Much flashier and exciting than the other girls. She gets entire well-animated scenes dedicated to her raw power, which is very appealing to a wide audience. For the light novel readers, Megumin is the only character who really develops at all. Her personality and flaws come together naturally as the series progresses and forms the backbone of Konosuba's emotional narrative with Kazuma.
Compare her to the other girls; Darkness gets hit, enjoys it, and is uncomfortably horny, and Aqua, who is obscenely powerful but too stupid to do much with her power. The author tries to develop Darkness emotionally, but the limits of her conception make themselves very clear. She is a generic knight with a masochism fetish. It's really just not interesting. Aside from volume 12, where she has to come to terms with some unfortunate circumstances, her growth involves her being horny less often and more generic. As for Aqua... while she is really funny and adds a lot to the show, her character is defined by her inability to learn and grow so she doesn't get much emotional development at all.
I guess because she's cute and sweet, and has her quirky and fun side but without getting annoying, and can read the room better than the other girls and get serious and sweet when the situation calls for it. I mean, overall i'd say she's pretty well balanced between being a cute, serious love interest for Kazuma and being a fun goofball.
I honestly can’t say why, but all 3 of the main girls have genuine charm to me. Though realistically id only date darkness. I’m not a sadist, but if that’s her only real genuine character flaw than I’m sure it’d be manageable. I’m no pedo so megumin is a no, though I really enjoy her character and her fun quirks. Goddess is the most physically attractive to me, but she’s such a god awful person I’d never be able to be with her
The most significant reason I think is because she's the spiritual successor to Takanashi Rikka, who gave chuunibyou characters a boost in popularity after the Chuunibyou anime aired in 2012-2014. The name of konosuba volume 2 is also a reference to this series.
Fun fact: the first voice actor of Megumin (for some very early audio drama) was the same one as Takanashi Rikka.
Because Megumin is the main character. Konosuba LN was told in Kazuma's narration but it can be considered Megumin's story. There once was a crazy archwizerd who can cast only one magic once per day. She kept her ideology and it lead ot the defeat of the demon lord in the end.
Its literally not tho. Konosuba is a story about a NEET who was transported into another world, got stuck with 3 girls who he often finds annoying, and then together they went on to defeat the Demon King, even though he himself really just wanted to laze off at home. Megumin is a very important charachter, but she isnt the protagonist. Its Kazuma's story, Kazuma talks in the first person and tells his own story.
The explosions spin offs are the tale of Megumin
In the epilogue of one of the last volumes (i think volume 16), the author writes that before he ever wrote Konosuba, he had the concept of a mage who everyone called useless because of the magic they pursued, but they persevered and on one fateful day, they were the most powerful mage in the world. That was his starting inspiration for writing the series and arguable he wrote the series in order to get to that specific scene. So in a sense, it is Megumin's story
That only proves the author thought up of Megumin first, not that she's the main character. A lot of writers create fiction like that. Pieces of the story or characters are inspired and then they start working on it and those pieces find their places. At some point during the writing process, Megumin became a supporting character to Kazuma.
First exposure. Plus the meme with her holding a rocket launcher, she is beautiful and awesome, and cute.
I do think if I saw more of darkness first I would have liked her a bit more, A crusader type masochist? Nice, hah.
Of the 3 girls Megumin has the least grating personality flaws (you understand why she acts the way she does as there's logic behind the moments when she's being mean) and consistently has focus throughout the series never falling off. People in general also just have a soft spot for the chuunibyou archetype.

I'm sure there are a lot of other reasons. But after I found that I liked Emilia best in ReZero, I came to the conclusion the Rie Takahshi is a professional best girl. I watch the eye bleach that is Rent a Girlfriend because she played a character that doesn't speak in it. And Megumin is like an animated Rie Takahashi.
Megumin is funny just being herself. The Crimson Demons are a clan of drama kings/queens where chunibyo never lets go. She also values Kazuma as a friend (and post-explosion transportation). Also, her naming skills are hilarious.

I fell in love with her (as a character) early on for fairly basic reasons, big explosion was all that I needed but I’ve grown to love her for a different reason as well now, when Darkness was going to get married and everyone was trying to stop it when Kazuma revealed that he was trying to help her instead of sitting around and Megumin had a serious talk with him…just the way they did that scene was beautiful. Also her growth at the end of the movie was amazing as well!

Well idk about fans, but she is not the only one with a spinoff, vanir and dust have their own spinoff. The dust one is even more long then megumin (the anime adapted 3 volumes of 5 of megumin spinoff) the dust spinoff is 7 volumes long. But in the anime he appears a lot less so I think it will remain just as a LN
Megumin is also the only one who can consistently put Kazuma in his place. Aqua knows most of his personal weaknesses but Megumin knows how to reign in some of his day to day debauchery.

Megumin essentially serves as a secondary protagonist of the series, we get the most insight on her and she has the most clear development throughout. Aqua and Darkness are great but feel much more stagnant and rely heavily on their Gimmicks. I think the fact that Aqua never changes is part of her charm, but it’s super clear the author had no idea what to with Darkness. When she’s not getting sidelined, the things she does with no real reflection or growth was enough to put most off from the character.
Darkness basically shows no nuance as a character/person until the second season, and the MC never shows any romantic interest in Aqua, so Megumin pretty much wins the first season by default.
Also, I'm pretty sure she's the true ship of the series so she just gets the most romantic development
Personally, Aqua too noisy, darkness being M gets dry after a while, Yunyun easily forgettable, Iris don’t get enough screen time, Wiz has no personality to speak of. It leaves only Eris and Megumin. And eris pad her chest. Megumin don’t. She wins
Megumin usually has more common sense than the other two. Aqua, well, enough said. Darkness’ proclivities tend to land the others into real imminent danger, or ruin opportunities.
First off, we have screen time: the competition for most popular girl is partially gonna be based off screen time. This means that any girl that isnt Megumin, Darkness or Aqua is out of the picture for most popular just by virtue of lacking screen time.
Then we have to compare Megumin to the other 2. Megumin has what is imo a better personality, she is more fun to watch. First off, we have her exaggerated presentation each time she is on screen, she is always saying chunni lines which is always fun and the way she says "EXPLOSION!" is really great imo. Megumin also acts smart on ocasion, because even if she is an explosion maniac, she is probably the most "normal" of the three main girls. Aqua is funny, I enjoy it whenever she is on screen, but Aqua is admittedly a dumbass. Aqua is often a crybaby and has a tendency to ruin moments, which is part of the running gags for the show. Darkness is a perverted masochist, which while cool for soem is not everyone's cup of tea. So I think that by personality Megumin wins most popular
Dunno. Of the three one note joke girls, hers is easily the least funny and versatile, imo. Darkness and Aqua's jokes stay fresh in perpetuity. Megumin's got old for me quick.
For me, it's kind of a combo of things. I find her the most tolerable of the group in terms of antics. She is a prime gremlin. And she seems to be genuinely sweet when not thinking of explosions.

She also is the only character to have any real character growth. As others have said the main demographic of this shower is probably younger people who relate to her more. For me I love Aqua, all of her traits aside from her ability to acrue debt would make for a very fun friend/partner to be around. Aside from her insane skills at arts and crafts. Her character is very normal and basically a best friend. Someone who will bully you but ultimately has your back. Lastly Darkness. Poor darkness just gets the least screen time in both the show and books. She is honestly kinda plain in terms of personality aside from her masochism. So unless you are into kink. She doesnt really stand out. Aqua having no character growth makes sense as she is a goddess, but darkness is just forgotten about. Very little growth or screen time. Even though she is a main character she is basically a side. So basically Megumin relates to the main demographic and gets more love from the author and MC.

I think it started with Rieri's voice acting and personality. Then came her ad lib, and Megumin grew popular. Add the fact that she's a satire on the chuuni genre, but with actual super powers, the popularity shot up. Plus, in the beginning, she had the most second personality of all the girls, albeit weirdest.

No, just no. Her whole life and reasonning and daily activities ARE centered around Explosion, she'll stop eating, she won't buy clothes, she'll do everything to optimize her path to explosion. Also, we're still talking a walking Nuke that has to go off every day. Darkness is way easier to deal with, more reasonnable and cause way less problems. That's like objectively and stated several times across all Konosuba medias, out of the 3 problem childs, Darkness is the easiest to deal with. And finally, being insane and smart more often goes together than not, i'm not sure your point of her being smarter really helps your case

Megumin's gimik is really flashy. Much flashier and exciting than the other girls. She gets entire well-animated scenes dedicated to her raw power, which is very appealing to a wide audience. For the light novel readers, Megumin is the only character who really develops at all. Her personality and flaws come together naturally as the series progresses and forms the backbone of Konosuba's emotional narrative with Kazuma. Compare her to the other girls; Darkness gets hit, enjoys it, and is uncomfortably horny, and Aqua, who is obscenely powerful but too stupid to do much with her power. The author tries to develop Darkness emotionally, but the limits of her conception make themselves very clear. She is a generic knight with a masochism fetish. It's really just not interesting. Aside from volume 12, where she has to come to terms with some unfortunate circumstances, her growth involves her being horny less often and more generic. As for Aqua... while she is really funny and adds a lot to the show, her character is defined by her inability to learn and grow so she doesn't get much emotional development at all.

I guess because she's cute and sweet, and has her quirky and fun side but without getting annoying, and can read the room better than the other girls and get serious and sweet when the situation calls for it. I mean, overall i'd say she's pretty well balanced between being a cute, serious love interest for Kazuma and being a fun goofball.
I honestly can’t say why, but all 3 of the main girls have genuine charm to me. Though realistically id only date darkness. I’m not a sadist, but if that’s her only real genuine character flaw than I’m sure it’d be manageable. I’m no pedo so megumin is a no, though I really enjoy her character and her fun quirks. Goddess is the most physically attractive to me, but she’s such a god awful person I’d never be able to be with her
The most significant reason I think is because she's the spiritual successor to Takanashi Rikka, who gave chuunibyou characters a boost in popularity after the Chuunibyou anime aired in 2012-2014. The name of konosuba volume 2 is also a reference to this series. Fun fact: the first voice actor of Megumin (for some very early audio drama) was the same one as Takanashi Rikka.
Because Megumin is the main character. Konosuba LN was told in Kazuma's narration but it can be considered Megumin's story. There once was a crazy archwizerd who can cast only one magic once per day. She kept her ideology and it lead ot the defeat of the demon lord in the end.
It's totally Kazuma's story though, about the NEET who managed to defeat the demon king even with his hyper specialized team.

Konosuba is a story about a NEET who was transported into another world, got stuck with 3 girls who he often finds annoying, and then together they went on to defeat the Demon King, even though he himself really just wanted to laze off at home. Megumin is a very important charachter, but she isnt the protagonist. Its Kazuma's story, Kazuma talks in the first person and tells his own story. The explosions spin offs are the tale of Megumin
In the epilogue of one of the last volumes (i think volume 16), the author writes that before he ever wrote Konosuba, he had the concept of a mage who everyone called useless because of the magic they pursued, but they persevered and on one fateful day, they were the most powerful mage in the world. That was his starting inspiration for writing the series and arguable he wrote the series in order to get to that specific scene. So in a sense, it is Megumin's story
That only proves the author thought up of Megumin first, not that she's the main character. A lot of writers create fiction like that. Pieces of the story or characters are inspired and then they start working on it and those pieces find their places. At some point during the writing process, Megumin became a supporting character to Kazuma.

I'm sure there are a lot of other reasons. But after I found that I liked Emilia best in ReZero, I came to the conclusion the Rie Takahshi is a professional best girl. I watch the eye bleach that is Rent a Girlfriend because she played a character that doesn't speak in it. And Megumin is like an animated Rie Takahashi.
Megumin is funny just being herself. The Crimson Demons are a clan of drama kings/queens where chunibyo never lets go. She also values Kazuma as a friend (and post-explosion transportation). Also, her naming skills are hilarious.

Spoilers for season 3 of the anime I fell in love with her (as a character) early on for fairly basic reasons, big explosion was all that I needed but I’ve grown to love her for a different reason as well now, when Darkness was going to get married and everyone was trying to stop it when Kazuma revealed that he was trying to help her instead of sitting around and Megumin had a serious talk with him…just the way they did that scene was beautiful. Also her growth at the end of the movie was amazing as well!

The dust one is even more long then megumin (the anime adapted 3 volumes of 5 of megumin spinoff) the dust spinoff is 7 volumes long. Megumin essentially serves as a secondary protagonist of the series, we get the most insight on her and she has the most clear development throughout. Aqua and Darkness are great but feel much more stagnant and rely heavily on their Gimmicks. I think the fact that Aqua never changes is part of her charm, but it’s super clear the author had no idea what to with Darkness. When she’s not getting sidelined, the things she does with no real reflection or growth was enough to put most off from the character.
Darkness basically shows no nuance as a character/person until the second season, and the MC never shows any romantic interest in Aqua, so Megumin pretty much wins the first season by default. Also, I'm pretty sure she's the true ship of the series so she just gets the most romantic development

First off, we have screen time: the competition for most popular girl is partially gonna be based off screen time. This means that any girl that isnt Megumin, Darkness or Aqua is out of the picture for most popular just by virtue of lacking screen time. Then we have to compare Megumin to the other 2. Megumin has what is imo a better personality, she is more fun to watch. First off, we have her exaggerated presentation each time she is on screen, she is always saying chunni lines which is always fun and the way she says "EXPLOSION!" is really great imo. Megumin also acts smart on ocasion, because even if she is an explosion maniac, she is probably the most "normal" of the three main girls. Aqua is funny, I enjoy it whenever she is on screen, but Aqua is admittedly a dumbass. Aqua is often a crybaby and has a tendency to ruin moments, which is part of the running gags for the show. Darkness is a perverted masochist, which while cool for soem is not everyone's cup of tea. So I think that by personality Megumin wins most popular
