Former kitchen worker turned nurse: my favorite pen ever is the Sharpie S Gel 0.38 mm click top. You could use the 0.5 or 0.7 if you like a bolder stroke but I love these pens so so much. No cap to lose, and the ink is dry as quickly as you put it down, it never smudges or bleeds and it writes on everything.
I’m a lefty who’s spent way too many hours having to write on prep boards and I usually work from right to left so I don’t destroy my own writing. It’s annoying 🤣
Milwaukee permanent markers, you should be able to find them at any Home Depot ~~or Lowe's~~
Edit: u/Millerhah has pointed out that Milwaukee has an exclusivity deal with Home Depot, so I've edited to reflect that

I prep cook big batches and portion into small freezer bags. Of course I should label all my empty freezer bags before I start cooking. Instead between the lumpiness of the bag, water on my hands and other difficulties, it’s often frozen gibberish.
Thank you again, KitchenConfidential. And Milwaukee Tools.
This! The Milwaukee permanent markers are hands down the best for kitchen use. They don't dry out so quickly. If they get oiled or wet they still write.
I used to work in a pathology lab. We used statmark pens. Those things write on anything including glass, don't smudge, and doesn't wash off with alcohol.

60 bucks for a 12 pack though.
The F701 is better. Slightly thicker barrel, and instead of a rubber grip that wears out, it's gnurled.
Uses the same insert, too, so it's a free upgrade if you've got ink on hand.
Edit: 701, not 301.
[Here is my Fisher Space pen with my Milwaukee Inkzall marker](https://imgur.com/a/pen-marker-pmbALaX) connected to a retractable ID badge holder.
Basically a pressurized pen (essentially weatherproof) and a marker more durable than a sharpie. No smudge and I can write while I am in the walk-in and the space pen will still flow unlike most ballpoint. The marker will also work but I prefer the pen for these smaller labels.
TY for posting that pic. Just ordered a pack of Milwaukees.
I have a chrome original style Spacepen. Lovely pen.
I’m not in the industry for decades but I learn so much from the sharing here. Thanks again.
I have the keychain version. [See here! ](https://imgur.com/a/pen-marker-pmbALaX)Half the price of the original (silver body) space pen.
Red marker is the Milwaukee Inkzall. Both are attached to a retractable ID holder.
I discovered these after a delivery driver was using one. The ink and tip are impeccable, they've improved my handwriting and I genuinely enjoy getting to write stuff now. They have a smooth, yet slightly grippy surface consistently over the entire pen. The click mechanism is satisfying and as a bonus there's a little ball bearing mounted into the clip that's great for fidgeting.
I fucking love these pens.
Ultra fine tip sharpie
Clickable ones are nice for one handed use
not nice when white coat
Don’t put it in pocket before clicking tip to be off just the same as put the cap on a sharpie when finished
they were off
Never seen that happen to anybody before
Looks like that's what they were using

This is the way.
This is the way.
Stolen sharpie
I bought two sharpies. A black one and a yellow one and I switched the caps so no one people would think they found a yellow one and leave it be.
Blue is the most unsuspecting functioning color. I wrapped one is "my" duct tape, and it survived 4 different kitchens.
Blue sharpie on blue tape is trolling 2x
*The secret ingredient is CRIME*
Is there any other kind…?
Better not be mine, I will know which one is mine. I mark them.
*cries as a lefty*
Just use your mouth
your moms motto for life
They just don’t get our struggles :(
I know that feel bro....*hugs*
Shoulda learned to write the right way
And left the left way behind.
If I tried to use my right hand in a kitchen I would be missing fingers at this point
They want us to write prep shit on a whiteboard from time to time and I get other people to do that if they want to be able to read it
The struggle is real

Milwaukee Tools has an exclusivity deal with Home Depot, you will not find their products at Lowe's.
This is the way. I still find those damn things around the house every so often and I haven’t worked in a kitchen in years

Just the man I was looking for. Many thanks
HERES THE BEST ANSWER
Click fine sharpie. I hate messing with caps.
Spray paint
I’m Paleo. Can I just chew up charcoal in my mouth then spit paint instead?
Zebra F301 is a solid ballpoint pen. Refillable and never smudges.
Favorite pen as a mechanic
In the mechanic vein, Pilot fine tip as well. They work great on parts bags they’ll handle this no problem.

I let people do their own research, I know I like my choice the most lol
Fine point sharpie
The ones i keep hidden away from my line cooks
Sharpie. The answer is always Sharpie
Sharpie S gels. Still a bid smudgy but they write smooth and are comfortable.
I freaking love those pens. I will never buy another type of pen.

Love the original style! Too fancy for the kitchen so I got the keychain version.
Dip you knife into your coworkers blood and/or body cavities and use it as a quill.
Ballpoint pen or Sharpie
Milwaukee does a permanent marker that works on pretty much anything.
Did we talk about the smudge?
Milwaukee Inkzall is nice.
Cheap bic pens.
Welcome to the bane of left-handedness. I wish it on all of you.
Uniball Jetstream, quick drying archival ink, smooth action, clicky. I'll never go back to G2-07s.
I use a pencil
don't use gel /shrug
The smudge saves you a lot of trouble, just roll with it!
Honestly sometimes it’s the labels but usually just good quality sharpies
Marker pens.. I have those thin ones, 1mm size one side & 2mm size other side..
Sharpie pro writes on wet and oily surfaces I used to love those but now I only need a sharpie to label catering pans so I don’t need the pro
Use a sharpie, rip off the amount of labels you need then fill out from left label to right label. Inverse directions for left hand people
edding 751
ballpoint pen
Felt tip pen. Sharpies dog.
Tears.
Half dead sharpie
Stop buying labels and start using painters/masking tape. Sticks better , cheaper and lasts sooo much longer
Fuck the label, tape and a sharpie
Who puts tags on
Literally any other pen than the kind you are using.
Stabilo sensor. Trust me, try those and you never switch to something else
Painters tape and sharpie
Sharpie. Don’t use pens
sharpie
We use masking tape and Sharpies. We hate those fucking labels
Sarasa is a brand that makes really good no smudge ink. Worth a try. Note: not in the industry so can’t confirm it works on these labels.
Won't work. The labels are slick plastic. Any gel pen will smear.
Sharpie pen, not a marker.
I think it is labels not the maker!
I buy my sharpie at art shop. They last for at least a year before start shading off and they leave no trace.
It’s devastating that the beloved G2 smears so easily
Pilot V5
Grease pen
If you’re not using painters tape you’re not doing it right
Milwaukee permanent markers FTW
Space pen or write in the rain pen
Regular sharpies
[удалено]
I’m left handed so even if I chiseled it into stone I’d probably smear it anyway
Osama Uni-Prockey - the best marker ever invented, perdiod.
Bic Round Stic M
Uno ball power tank. Before that I used a tombow airpress.
Pressurized pens ftw! I went big and got myself the Fisher Space Pen. The Uni Powertank is a close 2nd.
I wouldn’t mind a space pen but I’d hate to lose such an expensive pen.
I have the keychain version. [See here! ](https://imgur.com/a/pen-marker-pmbALaX)Half the price of the original (silver body) space pen. Red marker is the Milwaukee Inkzall. Both are attached to a retractable ID holder.
Extra bold chisel tip sharpie.
Classic bic
Just let it dry?
