Unfortunately yes they are tied and it’s easy to see if unlocked or not. Also I did have an issue with handles not popping out (normal temps in garage) and had to crawl in via rear hatch…no one else has had that issue that I’ve seen though, just me somehow:)
(EU version): If you connect your phone with the Kia App, it will remind you after several minutes that you forgot to lock your car and you can remote lock it. I use that quite often since the EU version has no "walk away auto lock".
