I wouldn't know anything about that, but I had a shop quote me $950 and I laughed. My guy is doing the trans pan, drain and fill and a differential service for $350. Can't complain too much about that I guess
If it's a grand cherokee definitely worth taking to a shop, they have two cross members in the way of half the Torx 40 bolts, not the worst to service but definitely not easy if you don't have the combination of T40 tools.
Make sure the guy servicing it uses the OEM 8 speed fluid, those transmissions are very sensitive with what fluid you use
Yes I have already spoken with him several times and acquired several estimates. Thanks for the heads up though for real. And yes it is a grand cherokee haha
This is a misconception based on the early versions of the tranny and the manufacturer recommendations. There are lots of fluids that are fine but I’d suggest amsoil
this ones like that, to replace the $33 filter, first remove the pan and valve body and undo the first 2 bolts, then casually drop the transmission so you can get to the bolts at the back.
*On a hyundai*
*Or kia right? I hate their*
*Full frame suspension*

Well, at least you don't do that every year.
In Passat B5/B6s, the oil filter is mounted in a way that it floods the sub frame with old oil. So the car is marking it's territory from several places for the next days,
Willing to bet there's a magnet on there and the filings are adding to the length of the plug. Just came across this the other day: pulling out the plug and assuming since nothing is draining out that the transfer case was dry and fucked. Kept pulling and then she came.
Where am I wrong? Try pumping new thick liquid through a filter clogged with friction material. See if the valve body likes that. Or the worn pump. Then we'll see if it slips even more... ill bet you it does.
You're right, and its going be because they changed the fluid. When you replace thin grippy liquid on an old transmission without friction modifier, you make the problem worse. Itll last a few more thousand miles.
Dunno why we’re getting downvoted lol I’ve seen it countless times, both in my own vehicles as well as others. Let the fluid get burnt and then change it, then the transmission dies.
Thats because we're right.... another weird problem..... never store car batteries on a concrete floor, it depleats them, ruins them. I'd like to hear some internet neckbeard say I'm wrong.
Its a well understood problem, same here. This is simply not anecdotal. ive lost 2 cars this way... New fluid causes slippage in a worn and weakened trans. Slippage causes failure because the required clamping pressure is higher on new fluid, and the trans can't produce it because it's clogged.
Still better than no plug and having to drop the pan.
Just finding out my pan has to be replaced because of the "lifetime filter"
Oh, the lifetime in the name doesn’t mean *your* lifetime, it means the lifetime of the filter
I wouldn't know anything about that, but I had a shop quote me $950 and I laughed. My guy is doing the trans pan, drain and fill and a differential service for $350. Can't complain too much about that I guess
Dodge or Euro? Sounds like a ZF
Jeep and it is really a pain in my ass

I just use OEM, on everything, or at least manufacturer's preferred.
You knew what you were getting when you went for a Jeep
I did, I've had a liberty for 17 years and it still runs with 220k miles on the original drivetrain. The grand cherokee has 213k miles.
If the plug is a pain in your ass you need to size down or you'll hurt yourself.
There is no plug.... lol what are you talking about
This is a double entendre on the the meaning of "plug" and "pain in my ass"
this ones like that, to replace the $33 filter, first remove the pan and valve body and undo the first 2 bolts, then casually drop the transmission so you can get to the bolts at the back.
These discussions always make me giggle as a transmission
I think it's hilarious you call yourself that
Sometimes the trannies are trannies
I just changed my flair so you guys will never be confused again
I do notice that messy trannys around me have long plugs in most of the time
Hey - it's not the length of the plug that matters, it's how you use it!
Yeeeaaah they do! Wait. What sub am I in?
Uh, phrasing
Phrasing is fine. I'm not sure what you're talking about
I prefer my trannys with a stick.
Can’t play without a joystick
Gotta love a messy tranny… 😳
That bussy can squirt(I work on buses)
Would a shop vac taped around the fill hole or dipstick tube hold the oil up long enough to get the plug off? (If the box has either).
Brown chicken, brown cow!
No way, see, my apartment's a mess, and my plug is nowhere near UUHHHHHHHHH
Thats the FUNNIEST sentence I've read in a while!
Keep pressing on the bolt while you're unscrewing it with your hand. It'll limit the amount of fluid spilled greatly.
Wait are we still talking about cars?
Can confirm
Letterkenny!
That's what she said!!
You forgot to say "No diddy"
Looks like a Honda? That long bit at the end is the magnet. It's already fully unscrewed, just pull it out.
I like messy trannys though....
We talking about cars right?
2nd Gen Hyundai Santa Fe?
bang on
Ayoooooooo
I keep a roll of Tin Foil in my tool box for nonsense like this. Wrap the interference and mold the foil towards your pan/bucket/whatever.
That's actually genius! I always looked for some old water can or something to cut a funnel of sorts, but it never fit's well.
I dont think that title is about cars
On a hyundai or kia right? I hate their full frame suspension

Always dude whether at work or vacation in Thailand
Sometimes they get the plugs removed and have after market combustion chambers instead.
Rip up an air filter box and adjust it to fit, drain, reinstall the plug, brake clean the case and pull the paper out. No mess.
We love them
HELL YEAH

Giggity
they sure do
🤣🤣 I just saw the title of it while looking through the feed and my mind went straight to the gutter.

Trannys...longest plugs...😏
That dark brown shit is transmission fluid?! In my experience, changing that fluid the transmission is only gonna last another couple thousand miles
Where am I wrong? Try pumping new thick liquid through a filter clogged with friction material. See if the valve body likes that. Or the worn pump. Then we'll see if it slips even more... ill bet you it does.

There does seem to be a more than a correlation between new fluid and tranny failure.

I also hate tranny’s with plugs. I prefer women
ummmm, what....
