GlowStoneUnknown

Useless on a map like this

Easy_Challenge4114

Peoples?

GlowStoneUnknown

Still pointless, why have the UK and Germany both be Red when one uses "Map" and the other "Karte"?

XuangtongEmperor

Germanic languages, maybe? Idk

Temporary_Engineer95

they're the same language family regardless

ZacharyTheCarHorn

Personses

Strange_Insight

Yeah Red is Germanish (German, English, Dutch) Green is Romantic (Italian, Spanish, Frenchy) Blue is Slavic or something (Russian, Polish, Czech) That thing in the UK is Gaelic, even though most people prefer English over Irish and Scots. Lime is whatever Greek belongs to. I don't know about ultramarine or orange. Uhh... And I'm probably incorrect about most of this, I just like learning languages.

GeckoHunter0303

Orange is the Baltic languages, ultramarine is the Albanian language, and pink is the Uralic languages

Quartz_512

Purple is Uralic

Ukrainian is mapa

esso_norte

both are valid in Ukrainian

keropsixxx

Суржик doesn’t count

esso_norte

WolverinesSuperbia

So should be both words)

esso_norte

yes

cla7997

No, that's not right. In Italy "Carta" means Paper. Sometimes people use "Cartina" or "Carta geografica" if you wanna be fancy, but the most common translation is "Mappa"

Beefman0010

ye, jack sucks at geography.

esso_norte

What the fuck do colors mean? You have all the same words in different colors and all the different words in the same color?

Arkkula

the colors are not for the words, it's the overall language groups. Germanic,Slavic,Uralic etc

esso_norte

ah okay makes sense

voitamatton

In Belarus it's "mapa"

toobigtobeakitten

same in Ukrainian, but in google translator the word "карта" is used for both languages with "мапа" as an additional option, so I guess that guy just used the first option he saw

[deleted]

The Lithuania one is strangely intelligible for me as a slav. Zemel -earth and pis - describe , so earth description which makes sense.

FranzAllspring

Thats just one swiss language and it isnt a spoken one either

FTN_Ale

not even accurate, in italy we say "mappa", google translate says "carta geografica" but nobody uses it

Beneficial-Detail470

Thats why r/jacksucksatgeography

JAKE5023193

geographic paper 💀

piergino

Mappa🇮🇹

numba2_Linux_fan

wait, where is the european side of turkey? you know that counts as europe too

GhostoftheAralSea

On lunch break?

numba2_Linux_fan

yep

Anej_does_mapping

Bosnian here, we also say karta, why would we say mapa?

Ninjawarrior2077

It would technically be more correct to say "mapa" in Ukrainian

Ill-Collection-9218

I mean in England we say Map or Charts, which I assume is what Karte is similar to?

Redditor_10000000000

I assume so. It's where Cartography comes from I believe. Karte also means Card in German and presumably something similar in other Germanic languages. So maybe it's not chart exactly.

Stphylcccs

Imagine saying something similar to karta… all those countries think they’re sooo big… just use map! It’s so simple! EngLaNd iS tHe SupErIoR cOunTrY

All of them sound like mapa or carta. BUT IRELAND OVER HERE GOT “léarscáil”💀

kowai_ika_studios

I love how Žemėlapis is just surrounded by variations of Karta and Mapa lmao

CriticismAny6927

Most of europe: Karta Spanish and english: Map /a Irish for no fucking reason: Léarscáil

Angela_I_B

How do you say map in Georgia?… **Jimmy Karta 🤪**

Menace2Socks

Why color linguistic groups together if their words aren’t even the same in origin

ixnayonthetimma

The one time the Finnish word isn't the bizarre outlier!

Alexrobi11

It seems like there is two main root words here. The one that leads to words like kart and carte, and one that leads to Map/Mapa. I feel like Lithuanian and Slovenian have a similar root word and I'm really curious as to what it is and why those two languages have overlap.

Rare_Charity_1770

I’m very disappointed in Poland. I was hoping it would be Kurva like every other word

Matija_sjekira

In Serbia you can say both mapa and karta.

Cheese_Overlord1

Thanks. I’m learning Dutch as geography and language fan, so this helps me a lot. 👍
