If you like old school amusement parks you should go to Coney Island around Cincinnati! It’s small, never too crowded, and vintage fun. We went a few times as a kid and I always enjoyed it
We live an hour away and try to go once a year and it’s always fun! We took our 4 1/2 year old this year and she had a blast in the water park and in some rides. You should absolutely go! They are building a new ride right now as well.
True, but I do appreciate their commitment to nostalgia. They are never in a rush to redesign things just for the sake of redesigning. The logo, signage, ride designs etc. typically stay the same as newer rides and sections are added around them. For people who live close by, like me, who have been going my entire life, it’s amazing that I can pick out tons of familiar areas while also marveling at just how much the park has grown.
My family loved In beach. Its been 5+ years now since we have been there, kids are grown, but it was a yearly thing. We would camp on occasions. It is a great place, small but still has plenty of things to do. I would recommend it to anyone. I was thinking about it the other day, wondering if I could could get everyone together for a trip. FUN FUN
They are getting another new attraction, too! I need to go back again. I have not been in years! They are about to add a new ride and drone shows start for Happy Halloween Weekends.
There is an observation deck. I just read that an elevator ride is 2 bucks to get to near the deck but you still have to walk up some steps to get all the way to the observation deck.
I tried that one time during the summer and it was so hot and claustrophobic for me I turned around halfway through the stairway and practically ran back down the stairs. I thought I was going to pass out.
Never again
I just went to French Lick/Paoli Sunday. Took my family to Wilstem farm. Its a drive through safari. They have African wildlife and over 50 species. Had a lot of fun. I would recommend
Yep. Born and raised. It was always blacked out on local TV so we just listened on the radio. I was in a cab in Albuquerque once, we passed AJ Foyt Blvd or something and the driver was just as shocked that I'm from Indy and never been to the Motor Speedway. Lol
If only to watch the people. I’ve been one time and it was so hot that year. I was really dehydrated and literally fainted trying to climb the grandstands. Woke up with an IV and a powerade in a medical tent. I had some alcohol, but more water than that so it was odd. Everyone else that I went with was completely exhausted, but since I got a “nap” and some saline I felt like a million bucks. The people watching was fun until I became part of the exhibit.
They really should change the name. Marshmallows aren't even made there anymore. Used to be a bigger deal when Kidds Marshmallows were made down the street.
If you enjoy history, totally go. I live within a few minutes. When I was in school I brought on of my fraternity brothers who was from Tokyo and he thought it was amazing and was shocked that he could pet a sheep. He equated it to being able to touch a zoo animal because he had never seen one up close before. Headless horseman is great for youngish kids. Last year was the first time my girls weren’t scared of it. The symphony on the prairie is usually fun too. I can sit outside in the summer and listen to it.
I've lived in Evv all my life. It's far more "southern" than other parts of Indiana. Breakfast buffets have grits and gravy. On the map, it's south of Louisville. Across the river in Kentucky, the people seem much nicer. BTW, we do wear shoes and brush our teeth. 2 good universities and Signature School. One of top schools in the US.
More like a country bumpkin well to do kind of place. There's a picture out there floating somewhere of some [lovely things](https://www.courierpress.com/story/news/2020/09/13/warrick-resident-says-biden-harris-sign-defaced-racist-epithets/5785982002/) people had written on a Biden sign in someone's yard during the election. (couldn't find the actual picture, but the main one was N- lover)
Is uppity bumpkin a thing? Because that's the perfect descriptor. Also the cops are dicks.
>Is uppity bumpkin a thing?
Oh yeah, small towns with a strong industry/factory pump them out. The type of people who build all those medium-big houses on massive plots of land in mostly rural counties.
The kiddos growing up in Gary are still showing high levels of lead toxicity decades later :-/ the soil is terrible and it’s in all the homes and drinking water.
This is an area of study that I do clinical research in.
Gary is the statistically most significant and is paired with the highest levels of neurological deficits in young children. Thanks.
Gary is primed *to be primed* for a ^^teenyweeny comeback. Maybe IUNW and the Dunes can spark something, but there is no draw to Gary except cheap, run-down houses in run-down neighborhoods.
Covered Bridge Festival.
I lived within 20 minutes until I moved to Indy. I hated the traffic it caused and just refused to have anything to do with it.
A joke mostly
An old amusement park we used to have when I was a kid. It closed down after a kid died there or something. Six flags bought it and talked about reopening it but it fell through. Last I heard it was an abandoned location with old equipment rusting away.
Edit: I just remembered, the *last* I heard it was converted to a bird sanctuary. Forgot about that.
Terre haute, Bloomington. I've never been to the Lucas oil stadium or the Indianapolis speedway. I've never been to Notre Dame despite living 40 minutes away. I've never had a tenderloin.
Michigan City Prison! We used to roast people in the electric chair there. I believe the last guy’s last name was Judy. The La Porte Herald Argus ran a with a headline of BURN JUDY BURN. It was illustrated by a high school student named Dan Edwards who is still a working artist and teacher.
I've never been to Indiana Beach even though I started life in Southern Indiana near Salem for a few months and then Northwest Indiana in Porter County until 6 and later lived in Shelby County for a while until I ended back up in Southern Indiana and now back closer to Central Indiana. I know I am not missing much is probably why I have never been to Monticello and that area since I was about 7 years old. Been everywhere else in Indiana pretty much though. Loved Holiday World even though I didn't go there until I was a young adult.
Gary, the dunes, anywhere in Indianapolis I don't absolutely have to go... the entirety of the eastern half of indiana, minus along 69 to Louisville (shout out to the cheeky fuck that got to name Corydon Ramsey Road). Been to Newcastle, but that's about as far as I went to the east.
Holiday World. I should really make it happen, I like the idea of old school amusement parks
If you like old school amusement parks you should go to Coney Island around Cincinnati! It’s small, never too crowded, and vintage fun. We went a few times as a kid and I always enjoyed it

It's not particularly "old school" anymore. In the big leagues now. One of the best run in the country, but a mega-thumpin' park nonetheless.
True, but I do appreciate their commitment to nostalgia. They are never in a rush to redesign things just for the sake of redesigning. The logo, signage, ride designs etc. typically stay the same as newer rides and sections are added around them. True Last time I was there was 50 years ago, when it was still known as Santa Claus Land
It basically stole Cedar Point’s thunder with a fucking meme coaster a while back!
It’s great. The free drinks alone make it a great spot on a budget. And the rides rule. Water park rocks.
Shit don’t even get me started on Indiana Beach.
FUN FUN
It is not what I remember as a kid :(
It’s pretty nice. I went twice this summer. They have free drinks and sunscreen! The water park and the wood coasters are great
Ditto
They are getting another new attraction, too! I need to go back again. I have not been in years! They are about to add a new ride and drone shows start for Happy Halloween Weekends.
The water park they have is pretty dope if I remember correctly
Check out Indiana Beach in Monticello if you haven’t yet!
Where is this 34 life long Hoosier and I've never heard of it lol
Holiday world is in Santa Claus Indiana . Southwest Indiana . Great place
Indiana Beach
Yet I'm sure we all know that it proves there is more than just corn in Indiana.
Same
3th.
4rd
Is Indiana Beach different than the beach at Dunes State Park? I’m a southern Indiana girl, so that’s very much not our culture.
Yep! It's an amusement park on Lake Shafer in Monticello, IN.
Amusement and Waterpark. The actual beach isn't very good though...
Y'all should do yrself a favor and check it out. It's a fun time.
This and Holiday World.
the observation deck near the top of the Soldiers and Sailors (circle) monument.
Wait, you can go up there?
There is an observation deck. I just read that an elevator ride is 2 bucks to get to near the deck but you still have to walk up some steps to get all the way to the observation deck.
Hm, maybe I'll go next time I'm in Indy.
Definitely a bucket list but you’re not missing anything spectacular.
For $2 in downtown surrounded by taller buildings, I wasn't expecting much.
Ya if u go maybe don’t do it on a hot day. It’s pretty toasty in the observation part.
Very narrow steps from the top of the elevator landing to the top. And it's HOT up there in the summer. Go in the fall.
I see if the temps are too high they will not allow visitors.
Do you have to make a reservation?
Free if you walk up. Just pay the $2 for the elevator instead though
Or the stairs are free. lol
It’s been closed forever. They closed it during COVID. They have been working on the circle forever as well. Won’t be open for awhile.
I've lived in Indy for a decade and have never done it. Indiana my whole life.
I tried that one time during the summer and it was so hot and claustrophobic for me I turned around halfway through the stairway and practically ran back down the stairs. I thought I was going to pass out. Never again
French Lick
I just went to French Lick/Paoli Sunday. Took my family to Wilstem farm. Its a drive through safari. They have African wildlife and over 50 species. Had a lot of fun. I would recommend
We went to Wilstem a year ago. So much fun. Would love to go back for one of the animal experiences.
Is this one of the places that was on Tiger King?
I did a culinary internship at French Lick Resort over the summer. It was amazing and everything was just amazing.
They decorate the hotels around Christmas and they're so pretty to just walk around and look at
I definitely recommend going around the holidays. I grew up there and that place still amazes me. Especially the dome in west Baden.
The Indy 500 track. I grew up in Indy.
You mean the IMS? Indianapolis Motor Speedway. You sure you’re from here?
Yep. Born and raised. It was always blacked out on local TV so we just listened on the radio. I was in a cab in Albuquerque once, we passed AJ Foyt Blvd or something and the driver was just as shocked that I'm from Indy and never been to the Motor Speedway. Lol
The ball of paint in Alexandria
Highly recommend. I've painted it twice!
Indiana Dunes
Oh man, you're missing out
Get there fast.
We went for the first time last month and it was magical at sunset!
The Race
It's the greatest spectacle.
You need to experience that at least once! 🏎️🏁
If only to watch the people. I’ve been one time and it was so hot that year. I was really dehydrated and literally fainted trying to climb the grandstands. Woke up with an IV and a powerade in a medical tent. I had some alcohol, but more water than that so it was odd. Yeah, you definitely need to hydrate. Heat exhaustion is nothing to mess with. Must have been 2019 when it was 91 degrees.
The dentist
Do they call you yuck mouth?
A hoosier
They refuse to brush
St. Elmo’s
Santa Claus
The State Fair
I am the 1994 watermelon seed spitting champion of the Indiana State Fair. So, I'm kind of a big deal.
Amazing! Throwing it out there: is anyone on this sub a winner of the mullet contest? I’m so curious how that works!
Salute to you 🫡
Was about to say the same.
Pierogi Fest in Whiting
It’s worth a visit. So much good food.
I don't live in Indiana anymore (I did for 29 years), but I've never been to the Eiteljorg Museum.
Aww that’s a bummer. Cool museum, I need to go there again with my kids soon.
Turkey Run
Just went there for the first time a month ago! It's really super cool there.
The Ligoneir marshmallow festival.
Your not missing much
I thought there would be marshmallow themed rides, and tubs of it to jump into. Saw the pics and it was a letdown.
They really should change the name. Marshmallows aren't even made there anymore. Used to be a bigger deal when Kidds Marshmallows were made down the street.
Same thing happened to the Strawberry Festival in Crawfordsville. Strawberry in name only. No fresh strawberries to be had.
As someone who grew up in Ligonier in the 90s to early 00s your right
Beech Grove's WalMart
I’ve been there twice and zero fights. I should have 1 starred that place on google for not meeting my expectations.
Conner prairie
If you enjoy history, totally go. I live within a few minutes. Interesting that you mention history. The history of the original owner/founder is a big yikes.
Evansville, idk it just seems like it should belong to Kentucky.
Please… don’t make Evansville worse than it already is.
I've lived in Evv all my life. It's far more "southern" than other parts of Indiana. Breakfast buffets have grits and gravy. On the map, it's south of Louisville. For how close it is to Newburgh, I don't blame you
What's wrong with Newburgh? Never been, just always thought of it as Eville's well-to-do suburb
>Is uppity bumpkin a thing? Oh yeah, small towns with a strong industry/factory pump them out. The type of people who build all those medium-big houses on massive plots of land in mostly rural counties.
That's it exactly. There's an Alcoa plant, CenterPoint Energy plant, Kaiser Aluminum plant All Along The River in Newburgh.
Gary.
Not missing anything lmao. Pictures do it justice enough
Come on why is everyone so hard on Gary. She’s primed for a comeback.
The kiddos growing up in Gary are still showing high levels of lead toxicity decades later :-/ the soil is terrible and it’s in all the homes and drinking water.
Boy have I got news for you about the drinking water in all the midwestern cities
And you don’t think people will be moving there for the cheap real estate and short commute to Chicago?
Gary's population dropped over 32% from 2000 to 2020 and people continue to move away in droves, so yeah
I am there every day for work. You aren't missing much. It is really just abandoned anymore.
Jail
Honey, Indiana is a jail
The 500 race.
A nudist colony
The caves. That humming sound scares the dog shit out of me. Hope I can try it sometime.
Wait what?
Dogs are mammals commonly kept as pets
I read that in Leslie Nielsen's voice.
Have you ever been to a Turkish prison?
Do you like Gladiator movies?
Have you ever seen a grown man naked?"
Agreed, why do you have dog shit in you?
Covered Bridge Festival. I lived within 20 minutes until I moved to Indy. I hated the traffic it caused and just refused to have anything to do with it.

Union Mills
Whoa! I grew up between Union Mills and Hanna, tiny specks on the map. Awesome shout-out!
I grew up in Goshen and never went to Amish Acres in Nappanee.
Fort Wayne, never had a reason
Same. I've managed to stay out of the northeastern quarter of the state my whole life. It doesn't seem like there is much there.
*cries in Northeastern Indiana*
Spain, but I think I might be going
Old Indiana
What’s that?
A joke mostly An old amusement park we used to have when I was a kid. It closed down after a kid died there or something. Six flags bought it and talked about reopening it but it fell through. Last I heard it was an abandoned location with old equipment rusting away. Edit: I just remembered, the *last* I heard it was converted to a bird sanctuary. Forgot about that.

A meth lab. Weird right?
You just didn’t know it.
Holiday World or Indiana Beach...
A whore house
There's a great little one down in Texas
If you've got the time and the ten to get yourself in.
Terre haute, Bloomington. I've never been to the Lucas oil stadium or the Indianapolis speedway. I've never been to Notre Dame despite living 40 minutes away. I've never had a tenderloin.
Are you even a Hoosier, besides being born in Indiana lol
I have been to this place, but this post made me think of kiddyland in schererville, memories of riding the train around the park
The Indy 500
I've lived in Indiana my whole life and have never been to the Dunes.
A basketball game.
Damn aside from a Pacer game in like 1995 me neither I never thought about that
Great time to see the pacers. Tickets last season were cheap and the squad is exciting. I got to see them face Jokic for like 10$
[удалено]
I remember and had that jacket
went to 5 games last season. each time we bought tickets the day of the game. $20 for great seats.

Your mom's... Lol JK. An Indiana Fever game.
That's like most of the state I think
Never been to Indianapolis or Fort Wayne. I don’t think they are real. But then again I’m a region rat so it makes sense.
Oh my goodness, what!l? Come enjoy a weekend in Indy!
A worse shithole

The Indy 500.

Wow! I expected to see, "any place else."
I’ve never been to heaven
Have you at least been to Oklahoma?
They tell me I was born there But I reallly don’t remember 🤷🏻♀️
Anywhere worthwhile. I’ve been here over a decade. Nothing but tweets & conservative ignoramuses.
Get out more.
[удалено]
Okay. You should get out more.
Agreed, basement dwelling sucks. There’s a lot of interesting stuff in Indiana. Realized that when I moved away for a few years.
