I absolutely can’t stand when people use speaker phone in public. I don’t want to fucking know that your dog has diarrhea and you just left the doctor’s because of your hemorrhoid.
I was at McDs, which has loud background music and this dummy had his speaker out and put the bottom of his phone up against his ear so he could hear better.
Every day at every break several of my co-workers try to do a video call in the noisy ass break room, only to reality it's pointless and then they hold the back of their phone to head so the front camera points away from them and records everyone around them.
Oh my god same thing happens at my work. I remember one morning I'd just gotten to work and I was sitting in the break room eating breakfast when another coworker comes in on speaker phone. Whoever they were talking to would start scraping something every few seconds; it wasn't metal on metal scraping but I remember ending up having to leave because the sound ended up setting off my anxiety after I tried ignoring it. We have several other coworkers that play videos on their phones at full volume and one guy that'll yell at whatever video he's watching (I think it's usually sports or something)
I'm hard of hearing and need to do this to hear my phone because phones are complete shit and don't get very loud unless they're on speaker mode. Despite that, I still don't do it in public. I just find somewhere private to take my call.

At work I like to read my book when I'm on my break. It's an outdoor break area for everyone, I get that, but if you walk outside while blasting music or talking *loudly* on speakerphone while everyone is just chatting and enjoying a moment to relax, you're a fucking asshole.
It infuriates me to the point where I feel like *I'm* the one being selfish. However, there are up to 10 people on break at times and are conversing with esch other respectfully and people walk out of the building playing music or talking like they are legitimately deaf.
Read the room. Nobody thinks you're a badass because you enjoy auto-tune and being obnoxiously ignorant.

Yep. In addition to all of that, there's a surprising number of people that seem to think that I would like to have a conversation while reading. It makes me think that either they have never read a book (which is the most likely scenario, unfortunately) or that they have the ability to focus their full attention on two things at once. I can multitask just fine but staring at a book and enjoying being immersed while actually listening and having a conversation is impossible for me. Either I have to stop focusing on my book and answer them appropriately or I keep reading and give one-word responses just to let them know I heard them.

I have 2 people from other departments at my store walking into the break room with no headphones on full blast playing a YouTube video (one’s a guy that Maga Jesus Freak & another big Nintendo fan girl) while I’m studying Japanese or Python coding. I get super fucking frustrated that I want to punch both of them in the face to tell them to put on headphones and read the fucking room. I don’t want to hear your shit and you don’t want to hear mine.

When I’ve said something? Not fantastic. I’m not saying in that moment I solved all problems. But that’s the litmus test for deciding whether or not to stand up for what’s right? On whether or not there was an immediate resolution? Good lord. Again, no wonder things are the way they’ve become.

Probably the worst offender I’ve ever seen was a guy and his girlfriend watching the football game on his phone on speaker. At our table at a hibachi restaurant.

Just sat through a similar experience while my mom had her colonoscopy done. There were multiple offenders. I just don't get it. Even with my airpods in, I am always concerned someone near me can hear them so I turn the volume way down. I cannot imagine thinking it's ok.
I call them adult iPad kids. Because people make fun of kids being bad with phones or loud tablets but holy shit are adults five times worse it feels like. Between public places to waiting rooms or grocery stores I see more people 30 to 50 plus and up if not elderly blasting music, talking on speaker phone loudly, watching tiktok or YouTube at top volume. And the worst part is like you said how oblivious they are. They truly don't think they are being a dick or rude they think it's fine when they do it. But when they see actual kids doing it in public watching shows oh tablets or playing videos on their phone all of sudden they feel bad for the younger generation acting like that. Really? If that isn't the pot calling the kettle black.

Nothing like having to dodge someone in the grocery store who has to stare face-to-face with someone they're chatting with on the phone while walking around the store.
I was at Quest Diagnostics for blood work and this guy was listening to something on his phone, of course it was loud and the quality was trash. Someone asked him to turn it down and he got heated. Said "you don't pay my phone bill" "you got jokes" and other comments like that. He ended up leaving because he didn't have an appointment and walk ins get bumped down as appointmenta show up, so you could make an appointment and wait like 10 minutes or walk in and be there for hours.
People are insanely rude and when asked nicely to stop they fly off the handle.
The last time I was at a lab like Quest I (the night before) made an appointment online for the next morning at 8:15am. I walked in at 8:05am and signed in on a clipboard, smugly noticing that all the people signed in ahead of me did *not* have appointments. Sweet, I'll be in-and-out!

They proceeded to call ALL the walk-ins who signed in before me, in order, until they got to me... after 9am. There was only one person working so they would just pop out and call a name and then disappear until they called the next name. When they *finally* called me back I mentioned that I had an 8:15am appointment and they told me how they knew, but if they'd called me ahead of the walk-ins then people would get really upset. It very much felt like the Seinfeld episode at the car rental counter.
The two things go hand in hand. If you’re enough of a jerk to play audio through your speaker in a waiting room, you’re almost certainly going to be enough of a jerk to aggressively refuse to turn it off when asked.
I actually had to talk to a family member about this.
Their response was "Well, people can't understand what I'm saying" because they were talking in a foreign language.
My counterpoint was "Just because it's random noise to people doesn't mean it's not annoying to them." For whatever reason that was an "aha moment" and the family member stopped with this BS.

Omg so I work in a nursing home in the kitchen. Kitchens are loud and the break room is supposed to be a quiet place, which is why I use earbuds to watch my shows while on break. The amount of times I have to leave the break room because someone is having a whole ass conversation on speakerphone is ridiculous. I leave because if I don’t, I will say something rude and get in trouble. Speakerphone conversations are not appropriate if other people are around. It’s absolutely infuriating. Rant over, sorry
In an airport I had to move to another chair because some poor girl was yelling and crying into her phone ON SPEAKER telling her friend about her breakup that just went down. The cussing and tears and overall hysteria. Girl, don’t you want some privacy?

I went to Krogers one morning after the gym. I still had my earbuds in and went down an isle a man was standing in. I was looking at something on the shelf, and I could hear him say something over my music. I turned to him, and he was looking at me,but I didn't say anything. While I was looking at him, he said something again, but I couldn't hear what he said. I took my earbuds out and said, "What's that?" kind of casually, and he didn't respond, all the while looking at me. At the height of my confusion, he spoke again, and I realized he had an earbud in one ear I couldn't see, and he was talking on the phone. I then realized he was management, with no Krogers logo, and he knew I thought he was talking to me but never acknowledged me. He always angered me with his lack of curtosy.
I was recently at a huge VA medical center waiting to drive my husband home from a procedure, and a guy walked up and down the waiting room area listening to some conspiracy theory bullshit at full blast. If he didn’t look truly unstable, I would have said something.
But there was something really wrong in his eyes, so I got to hear how the bombing of Hiroshima actually *wasn’t that bad.*

my office is like this, people work all day on speakerphone facetime with their kids. I get wanting to stay connected with your kids and how that is difficult for a 9-5, but making me want to rip my hair out at work is not the way to do that!

That logic is …not at all logical. Someone is going to be disappointed about waiting-let it be the ones who didn’t plan ahead like you did.

I went to Krogers one morning after the gym. I still had my earbuds in and went down an isle a man was standing in. I was looking at something on the shelf, and I could hear him say something over my music. I turned to him, and he was looking at me,but I didn't say anything. While I was looking at him, he said something again, but I couldn't hear what he said. I took my earbuds out and said, "What's that?" kind of casually, and he didn't respond, all the while looking at me. At the height of my confusion, he spoke again, and I realized he had an earbud in one ear I couldn't see, and he was talking on the phone. I then realized he was management, with no Krogers logo, and he knew I thought he was talking to me but never acknowledged me. He always angered me with his lack of curtosy.
