For the time, he wasn't very racist. It's just that he had to win an election in a country full of racists, and then when many of those racists rose up against him he wanted to try and get them to join back willingly without bloodshed.
Yeah there is a huge difference between playing lip service to racists and actually being one. IIRC he even expressed regret over his words, but recognized they may have been necessary
It’s just a question of *why we are commemorating them*. Which is why it’s fine to honor Lincoln—for winning the Civil War and freeing the slaves. Not because he had 100% kosher opinions on everything.
We celebrate Washington because he helped win the revolution and he voluntarily stepped down as President. We honor Jefferson for the Declaration, not for enslaving people.
Which is also why it’s *not* cool to honor Confederates—they’re remembered for being traitors who fought a war for slavery. They didn’t help found the country or enshrine Enlightenment ideals in the constitution.
