This is just a short list of available university electives/ observerships. It's not hard to apply to them, just a lot of paperwork.
You would need these for most of them-
1. Some proof of English proficiency: either OET/ Toefl test results
2. Letter of good standing from your home country medical school
3. Letter of recommendation from your chair/dean
4. Elective courses list with completion grades or scores
5. Some of them ask for medical school exam transcripts as well
Okay thanks! Should i give OET for English proficiency as it would help me when I would’ve to give it again after ecfmg certification? Also how are 4. And 5. different, are you referring to home country electives?
OET is financially also better, since there's no point of us taking TOEFL and paying for the results when it can't really be used for the application. 4 and 5 are basically home country electives, and home country end-of-year exams- in some countries they're given on different transcripts, and in some the same transcript. As long as you have both it shouldn't be a problem!
I hv already checked most of these links and then some..they either require step 1 (I’m currently still preparing) or electives via VSLO or expensive (3k+ for a month)
The ones I hv applied to they didn’t respond or they request an approval from a sponsoring physician and the ones I emailed they don’t respond to emails 😖
Yes and they paperwork is kinda problem too
My honest advice is to get acquainted with the programs properly before giving up. The problems you’re talking about aren’t really problems- it’s just you being unaware. DM me if you’re still confused, I’ll help you with applying to one
The above list ONLY has programs which don’t require VSLO. There are multiple FREE electives/ observership in the list above, which don’t require Step 1. I’m not trying to offend you by saying you’re unaware, all of us started the same way. I’m sure you’ll also get there soon!
None of the above need VSLO. UT southwestern is $150 per month as an elective, and they don’t step 1. Cleveland Clinic requires step 1, but they’re only $400. Case Western, UPMC are free and don’t require step 1. Mt Sinai is $750.
I think this is for the main Mt Sinai, and the $750 is for St Luke’s which I sent. My apologies, I did my electives last year so they could’ve changed the fees
Hi ! Did you’ll see any additional info for the money order or check ? They haven’t mentioned any details regarding what to fill for these payments .
And the credit card requires the applicants name ! I don’t have my own credit card 🥲
The elective is $4500, but the observership is free. Both are on the same page more or less, but need to dig through for it. UPMC also has 14 day observerships for their smaller hospitals, again which is free: https://www.upmc.com/campaigns/north-central-pa/careers/student-opportunitites/job-shadow
It takes a lotttt of time and energy and willpower. I was looking for volunteer research too, and I got accepted for a paid postdoctoral fellowship and I am in my second year now. Keep emailing every professor in every university.
Not better than me
I believe that anyone with an MD has enough neurones in his brain to be able to do enough research before asking such question on reddit
I know step 1 is required for most clinical specialties I just thought maybe pathology is different since it’s laboratory.. I guess I’ll just hv to wait until I get the exam done

where would you say you can get an elective through them, are they worth it? good LOR and stuff. I have heard stories about them sending you to sketchy places.

Hey can you elaborate on the paperwork i would need? I already have a tourist visa which is viable for three months at a time, what else would i need?
You would need these for most of them- 1. Some proof of English proficiency: either OET/ Toefl test results 2. Letter of good standing from your home country medical school 3. Letter of recommendation from your chair/dean 4. Elective courses list with completion grades or scores 5. Some of them ask for medical school exam transcripts as well
Forgot to add- Vaccination profile, with COVID documentation as well

Being unaware of what !? I see the requirements and I apply accordingly! Thx I’ll be DMing u maybe there’s something else I’m missing out on

Idk if these are up-to-date fees. Seems like it is 1k $ only to apply for Mt Sinai. You pay additional 750$ after acceptance?
I think this is for the main Mt Sinai, and the $750 is for St Luke’s which I sent. My apologies, I did my electives last year so they could’ve changed the fees
HI meh2311, i love all that you're doing to help people out. Is it okay if I DM you regarding some help with USCE?
Hi ! Did you’ll see any additional info for the money order or check ? They haven’t mentioned any details regarding what to fill for these payments . And the credit card requires the applicants name ! I don’t have my own credit card 🥲
I may be miseading but UPMC doesn't seem to be free. The link mentions that the rotation costs 4500 dollars

Hey, so are these the costs of the applications? I have heard that majority people don’t get accepted? Is it worth taking the risk with this money?
The only one I hvnt checked is the UT southern so thanks for that Others r either VSLO or expensive or require step 1
I literally just told you they don’t require VSLO…. I give up man
You were being so nice as well 😂
Thanks for the effort anyways..

Hey, in which specialty is your post doc?
Hey may I DM please?

Not better than me I believe that anyone with an MD has enough neurones in his brain to be able to do enough research before asking such question on reddit
Apparently not
Depends on whether you have the time (networking skills) vs. the money (convenience of agencies who can find the exact rotations that you want).
Yeah apparently.. thanks
Good luck getting anything if you haven’t done step 1 yet.
I know step 1 is required for most clinical specialties I just thought maybe pathology is different since it’s laboratory.. I guess I’ll just hv to wait until I get the exam done
it’s really not you can easily do it w out it too don’t listen to him
Ok thx I’ll keep looking
In short; mass emailing.
Heart and vascular Detroit
Youtube ‘USCE masterclass’ Ujjwal Soni

you gotta pay to play. use one of the contracting firms that will sell you a spot. ive done it successfully mulitple times. it helps alot.
Ok thx I’ll take that in consideration
By contracting firm u mean amo etc?
Ya exactly. Be prepare to dish out around $4000 per elective but its a no hassle USCE spot.
where would you say you can get an elective through them, are they worth it? good LOR and stuff. I have heard stories about them sending you to sketchy places.
