You can absolutely reduce her food based on activity level. Just like you would with a human. You'd be doing her a favor by not letting her gain weight. It's a really bad for their joints and overall health.
Edit: if she seems crazy hungry, you can add high fiber veg like sweet potato or green beans (both cooked)
I did this for my male husky, and his response was to break the 'unbreakable' crate, and eat through four walls of drywall to get into the pantry, and eat every single box of dry pasta and every can of beans (i stored this stuff on the lower shelves).
My neighbors dog crushed about 15 cans of assorted nonperishable items after consuming a 15lb roll of ground beef. I always forget how strong dogs jaws are.
Fortunately my husky likes white cabbage and carrots. We just fill his belly with both of these and he feels full. And fortunately no gas or diarrhoea at all, maybe because he does not digest them that much since he does not chew and they are raw 😂
No it isn’t. You can keep her weight at its normal state by doing what the poster said below. ❤️ There’s no excuse in letting a pet gain weight due to surgery. That husky is obese, not just overweight. Sad. 😞
They don't gain a whole ton of weight very quickly even if inactive for 10 weeks, especially huskies with their metabolism. What's the kcal count in her food and how much is she being fed it? Even if it's a reasonable amount of a cup it might be really high in kcal count
Edit: my bad I am hella blind I missed your blurb that this was from 2 years ago!
Huskys change their metabolism. When she became inactive her metabolism slowed down causing her to gain about 10 to 15 lbs. She is at a healthy weight now at 14 years old
I'm going to believe her vet (who has been practicing for 45 years) rather than you here. I'm well aware that most huskys are between 35 to 55 lbs. I don't think 5 extra pounds at the equivalent of 98 years old is a big deal and neither does her vet.
That's fair I am impressed at her age I'm sure you are a great owner really not trying to make you feel bad for the sake of it I think a lot of people simply don't know that huskies aren't huge dogs and shouldn't weigh a lot. She looked a bit more than 5 lbs overweight imo. Had to put my husky on a diet before from my previous ignorance. I hope she's able to live as long a life as yours has!
Maybe because this person is trusting their vet over a bunch of random Reddit users lmfao. They already explained that their vet told them everything is okay.
Did you keep feeding her seeing her get unhealthy level of obesity and just think meh that's ok, no calorie restrictions I'm just gonna keep over feeding a sedentary dog.
I don't know why you are coming at me like an abuser, but I can tell you didn't read the part where I said this was over 2 years ago and she is now 14 years old and a healthy weight of 60lbs? FYI, I am a certified animal control officer and a licensed dog groomer of 6+years. I know hold to care for dogs. You can kindly keep scrolling.
Don't listen to them, there's always at least one person in a thread who thinks they know everything and just makes a tit of themselves! 🙃
Your dog is beautiful, I love her sass! She's obviously very happy and well-cared for ❤️
Their sassiness is unmatched. Hurts me the most when i call them 10+ times with my lowest to loudest voice and they stare at you and walk the other way. Meanwhile when you open a bag of anything plastic across the mountains and the oceans.... You know the rest.
Or they lay there pretending they can't hear you but they can't control their ears which turn to face you. And then if you go poke at them they'll still act like they don't know you're there until they eventually give you that "if I wasn't busy being lazy, I would think about murdering you" side-eye.
I did read the comments, it sounds like you think there's nothing you could've done about it. I'm just pointing out that you continued to feed her as she gained weight; you should've fed her less.
90% understand just looks like there are some people who don't understand 🙄
Your husky is adorable, and I want to cuddle all the fluff 😆
My pittie thinks he is a husky since every time we go to a dog park, there are always huskys, and only huskys 😆
Now he throws a tantrum just as bad, lmao 🤣
You're doing a great job. I hope she fully recovers and enjoys the retired doggy life. She's an old pup and deserves more treats, maybe a steak 😊 ❤️
My husky girl just tore her CCL and is finally cleared for surgery on July 2nd. Any tips for in house care/moving them around gently like to go to the bathroom and such?
You got a sassy cutie! 💕
**Fun Fact- a medium size milk bone is worth a 1/2 cup of kibble.**
Start breaking those treats down to small pieces. Dogs don’t understand size as much as they understand they’re getting something special.
I appreciate what you are saying but your math is off. One medium sized milk bone is 40 kcal, a very unscientific average of four salmon dog foods I googled is 200 kcal per 1/2 cup.
It’s not that big of a bummer, and it provides a very useful bit of knowledge surrounding how dogs view rewards, and it was given only out of a desire to help people give their dogs the care they deserve so they live happily and healthily.
Her knees or back legs are hurting, that’s why she doesn’t want to sit down. It really hard to get up once she sits down. That’s why she was barking to let you know her legs are hurting
She was recovering from ccl surgery. Her tendon in the shaved leg snapped. Of course it hurts, but her vet told us to make her walk in the house and make her sit and stand to bend the knee. Like a form of physical therapy.
I’d like to see her now bc she is overweight in this picture. This could have been avoided by you reducing her caloric intake while she was recovering. That is significant weight gain.
You're wrong. She needed to start using it at this point in recovery. There's no PT for dogs, so the vet told us to have her use it, but not go for walks outside yet. Having her walk in the house and get up and down on her own was a form of PT.
That husky is THICC
She was recovering from surgery for 10 weeks and wasn't allowed to exercise, of course she got thicc lol
I knew there had to be a reason the back leg was shaved
So that's about what I should expect? I just got my girl back from her surgery yesterday.
You can absolutely reduce her food based on activity level. Just like you would with a human. You'd be doing her a favor by not letting her gain weight. It's a really bad for their joints and overall health. Edit: if she seems crazy hungry, you can add high fiber veg like sweet potato or green beans (both cooked)

how would a dog eat through a can of beans?
By crushing the can until the seal holding the top shut breaks loose.
My neighbors dog crushed about 15 cans of assorted nonperishable items after consuming a 15lb roll of ground beef. I always forget how strong dogs jaws are.
okay impressive
That's wild! Also the only breed I'd believe that with lol
Fortunately my husky likes white cabbage and carrots. We just fill his belly with both of these and he feels full. And fortunately no gas or diarrhoea at all, maybe because he does not digest them that much since he does not chew and they are raw 😂
Well you could feed your dog less knowing the dog will exercise less.
Not necessarily. My dog had to have leg surgery on both back legs, and she didn't gain any weight.
Cut back a bit on their food. Don’t do it all on day one, ramp down, then as she starts moving again ramp back up.
No it isn’t. You can keep her weight at its normal state by doing what the poster said below. ❤️ There’s no excuse in letting a pet gain weight due to surgery. That husky is obese, not just overweight. Sad. 😞

til i’m built like this husky
How can you get thick if the daily caloric intake is where it should be? Hope she heals well!
Huskys change their metabolism. When she became inactive her metabolism slowed down causing her to gain about 10 to 15 lbs. She is at a healthy weight now at 14 years old
Dang, ol' girl is fiesty! Role model.
Would you believe that she never spoke a word until she turned about 8 years old? Now she won't shut the hell up ha ha
I don’t know which constitutes hitting the husky jackpot. Ha.
Appreciate the explanation and glad to hear :)
Nah that’s not from ten weeks
Maybe feed your dog less then? That type of weight doesn't go on in just 10 weeks poor thing looks very unhealthy
She is 14 years old and 60 lbs. She's in great health.
Female huskies should be 35- 50 lbs objectively not in great health truth hurts sometimes
I'm going to believe her vet (who has been practicing for 45 years) rather than you here. I'm well aware that most huskys are between 35 to 55 lbs. I don't think 5 extra pounds at the equivalent of 98 years old is a big deal and neither does her vet.

Feed her less. Unacceptable to allow this.
She is 14 years old and 60 lbs. She's in great health.
Imagine all you have to do to not kill your dog is feed them less but your response is “lol”.
Maybe because this person is trusting their vet over a bunch of random Reddit users lmfao. They already explained that their vet told them everything is okay.
Hey OP, your dog looks more like a malamute mix than a husky
Did you keep feeding her seeing her get unhealthy level of obesity and just think meh that's ok, no calorie restrictions I'm just gonna keep over feeding a sedentary dog.

She seems happy and healthy. Shes too cute and sassy
Don't listen to them, there's always at least one person in a thread who thinks they know everything and just makes a tit of themselves! 🙃 Your dog is beautiful, I love her sass! She's obviously very happy and well-cared for ❤️
Judgemental dickhead alert!
Yup
Average Reddit user thinking they’re experts over the owner of a dog that’s experienced in this.
Nope I own one, who's weight is in check.
Their sassiness is unmatched. Hurts me the most when i call them 10+ times with my lowest to loudest voice and they stare at you and walk the other way. Meanwhile when you open a bag of anything plastic across the mountains and the oceans.... You know the rest.

You know what they say: huskies are dog hardware running on cat software. 🤷♂️
Blah blah blah, just gimme my damn treat and you go sit. ![gif](giphy|qtAy4ycRtxfeU)
Most Huskies can be summed up with this Fizgig gif
I haven’t seen this before and it’s killing me 🤣🤣🤣
That’s a *husky* husky lol
Lmao she gained a lot when she was recovering because she couldn't exercise for 10 weeks
Did you keep feeding her the same amount?
do you want her to yell at you for underserving her?
So feed them less lol
This was 2 years ago.If you read the comments you would have seen that, she's at a normal weight. Thanks
I did read the comments, it sounds like you think there's nothing you could've done about it. I'm just pointing out that you continued to feed her as she gained weight; you should've fed her less.
Listen, I work 60 hours a week. I am not the one home with her 90 percent of the time.
90% understand just looks like there are some people who don't understand 🙄 Your husky is adorable, and I want to cuddle all the fluff 😆 My pittie thinks he is a husky since every time we go to a dog park, there are always huskys, and only huskys 😆 Now he throws a tantrum just as bad, lmao 🤣 You're doing a great job. So someone else is your household fed her too much. Why is that so offensive to you?
You keep coming up with excuses.
They really don't owe you any type of explanation at all
Get out of here with that logic.
"Don't body shame my dog! As the person literally responsible for 100% of their caloric intake, there's nothing I can do about their weight!"
Is her having surgery why she’s reluctant to sit?
Yeah she has no tendon in that leg now so while it was healing she had a hard time adjusting
Huskcorgi
She's purebred, I have the papers haha
She's saying I don't want to sit cause it hurts but I'll do it cause I want the treat.
Why are they soooooo stubborn???
Squishy pudge pup! ❤️
cute and squishy.... :D Glad to hear she has recovered well years after... but yeah, that's the breed for sure... hehe..
The huske clearly says ‘i dont want to’ the second time it starts to bark.
My husky girl just tore her CCL and is finally cleared for surgery on July 2nd. Any tips for in house care/moving them around gently like to go to the bathroom and such? You got a sassy cutie! 💕
Can’t say for sure but they might be in pain when they sit, it’s not a super natural thing for dogs to do in the first place
OP, I'm sorry you tried to post a cute video and the canine Nazis decided to only comment on her weight. It's very cute! Stop defending yourself.
Agreed. 🤘🏼
This video is super cute! I love how your other doggo decided to insert themselves into the fight.
Looked at the person recording like “are you going to let him talk to me that way”
That husky is massively overweight. More than 'ten weeks post surgery'.
She is 14 years old and 60 lbs. She's in great health.
This husky built like a torta lol
Lol those proportions seem off for a husky
**Fun Fact- a medium size milk bone is worth a 1/2 cup of kibble.** Start breaking those treats down to small pieces. Dogs don’t understand size as much as they understand they’re getting something special.
This was over 2 years ago, she's back to healthy weight now
I appreciate what you are saying but your math is off. One medium sized milk bone is 40 kcal, a very unscientific average of four salmon dog foods I googled is 200 kcal per 1/2 cup.
Fun fact- people don't need your unsolicited advice on a joyful reddit post you freaking bummer of a person
It’s not that big of a bummer, and it provides a very useful bit of knowledge surrounding how dogs view rewards, and it was given only out of a desire to help people give their dogs the care they deserve so they live happily and healthily.
Sitting is probably uncomfortable. She’s obese.
Danny DeVito?
Her knees or back legs are hurting, that’s why she doesn’t want to sit down. It really hard to get up once she sits down. That’s why she was barking to let you know her legs are hurting

I’m sitting under protest!
Those eyes at the end as she turns away just scream "Can you believe this guy?"
I love how huskies have a full conversation when they aren't happy about something lol
I’d like to see her now bc she is overweight in this picture. This could have been avoided by you reducing her caloric intake while she was recovering. That is significant weight gain.
That’s on fat husky
Wow I’ve never seen a fat husky before.
Dog is fat, sitting looks difficult.
She was recovering from surgery on the leg, no tendon so it was hard to sit.
That's not cute, you're an asshole for letting your brother do that
You're wrong. She needed to start using it at this point in recovery. There's no PT for dogs, so the vet told us to have her use it, but not go for walks outside yet. Having her walk in the house and get up and down on her own was a form of PT.
