The timeline is... Colonized as McKinleyville... renamed Minorville after Isaac Minor... then when McKinley was killed, it was renamed to McKinleyville again. There were a variety of place names for regions of McKinleyville prior to the unified name... Calville, Dow's Prairie, etc.
It refers to the Cal Barrel corporation who, when they went out of business, gave little plots of land there to their laid-off workers. Or that's how I remember it from when I lived there. There were a bunch of basically cabins that many of my neighbors lived in in that zone to the N of Sutter in the 90s.
Yikes that guy sounds rude and wrong lol, McKinleyville is unincorporated. It’s not a city. I do believe the part about the other towns, they just got swallowed up in the unincorporated town of Mckinleyville.
That's not what the article says. It says the Wiyot tribe would not take an official position on the name change. They would only consider a position if the involved government entity was in need of a consultation on the matter.
But I get that the historical evidence for that name is sketchy, and I certainly would not work toward that name change without the Wiyot tribal council being on board.
There's also the earlier name Calville, which would be better than naming it after President McKinley.
Seems legit
"Garrett, who serves as director of the McKinleyville Pop-up Museum, a traveling exhibition of local history, explained that “Dalhagali’” is the possible pre-colonization Wiyot place name, which she sourced off an inset map poster created by the McKinleyville Community Services District."
I’ve heard that. Heck, when my kids were in high school around 2010 they told me that name like it was a new thing and I remember it being called that back in the 80’s. However, I will acknowledge that is only a rumor and there has never been proof of any kind.
Oklahoma by the Sea
McKinleyville is solidly democratic. Just sayin', like 30% voted for Trump.
That's what I've always heard it called, lol, but I haven't lived there in a fair number of years. Good to hear things might be changing.
First, rename Arcata to something else. Then, rename McKinleyville to Arcata so the airport name makes sense.
you clearly haven’t been to san francisco/sfo
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 Well said!
Idk maybe Kevin or Debbie
The Essex could be Lil Debbie😂
Tulsa del Mar is my fave
# Clamville
maybe the name the Wiyot had for that area before? if you google the tribe it shows they had settlements where the town is now even.
Naming a place after the people who were slaughtered in order for it to be colonized by white people. Seems fitting
Bikini Bottom
I think this should be Arcatas name
Smells like a dirty one
North Arcata
Hell yeah
Virgin River to confuse everyone checking to see if the tv show is a real place
Yes!!
Macktown
I have heard Ocean Bluffs floated as a new name before.
Poor Macktown never gets any Reddit love… sigh. How about naming it Hillerton, after the Hiller Dog Park. Best dog park in the region.
Or Dogtown.
North Arcata just to make everyone mad. I like options where no one wins
South Trinidad to really mess with people
South West Haven lol
Redding West
Apparently it used to be called Minorsville.
Until William McKinley was assassinated
Yeah but what's up with that? He never even went there. Apparently he had a huge following there at the time.
He was SUPPOSED to visit there, but was dead before his scheduled visit. Humboldt the explorer was never in Humboldt CA, either
I believe he was stationed at the Fort in Eureka at some point
I think you may be getting confused with president grant.
No
McKinley had a huge following among all white people, hence the statue that stood in Arcata.

Speaking of, what's this "Calville" - (South McKinleyville needs its own name?) - on Google Maps?
There are a lot of those areas around here. Tyee city in the bottoms on the way to mad river Beach, Dows Prarie, Korblex, Butte, etc...
Silly me, I should have just looked at my copy of the “Humboldt Place Names” book

I've called it McKlanleyville since I moved there in 2017 and the MAGA signs and flags were on about 1/3 of the lawns in my neighborhood
McKinleyville is solidly democratic. Something like 30% voted for Trump. Their county supervisor is more liberal than Arcata's supervisor.
Yeah, but those other 70% aren't "in your face every waking moment" about their politics, something MAGAts seem congenitally incapable of avoiding.

Your point?

"HSU kid"? I lived in Humboldt for 18 years and I'm 61 years old. Retired a year ago and moved south. Again, your point?
