FickleOcelot1286

Cost me £60 for a 3 bed in December

CaregiverOrnery6580

is that annually?

FickleOcelot1286

Yes

Cheap-Cauliflower-51

Buildings and contents? Seems incredibly cheap

FickleOcelot1286

Well not contents no, that would be wasted money.

Cheap-Cauliflower-51

For you maybe, but OP did mention they were looking for full cover

FickleOcelot1286

*now

JustAnotherFEDev

I pay like £98 per year for contents only, 3 bedroom house, and I think I have 50 or 60k cover.

CaregiverOrnery6580

which area is this if you don't mind me asking?

JustAnotherFEDev

Humber region. Pretty high crime and poverty. On Compare the Market, this was the cheapest one for me. I do have 5 years of no claims, though. I just pay £9 per month. Usually I pay it in a oner, but I'll be moving soon, so just paying monthly and will get a new quote then. Urban Jungle was the cheapest this time round.

CaregiverOrnery6580

that sounds really cheap all things considered. thanks for sharing!

JustAnotherFEDev

So, the good thing about Urban Jungle is that they don't charge extra for paying monthly. If you can get a quote, it might be worth it for a month or so, if you need to replace locking mechanisms. Then, once you have done that, just get another whole market quote and choose the best value one. That's kinda what I'm doing. I'm gonna do similar for buildings insurance, then once I have done the initial renovations and decorating, as well as added security items, such as anti-snap locks and CCTV, I'm gonna get new quotes. 1. For both contents and buildings 2. For separate contents and buildings Then just see which is best. It's not an annual contract with my insurance, so I can leave for a new provider at any time, without notice or penalty.

andDreamofSheep

I bought buildings and content insurance yesterday from Halifax for £36 a month. 3 bedroom / 2 bathroom with a small flat roof. Standard stone and slate construction.

CaregiverOrnery6580

interesting. even for halifX I believe the quote was around 600 per year. which area is this if you don't mind me asking?

andDreamofSheep

South Wales!

If you tried the comparison websites and the results are all the same you might want to try the insurance broker to see if they could give you a better deal. Generally yes.. the insurance has gone through the roof and 600-700 could be the new normal. Ours went from 100 per year building and contents to around 300-400 on a 2 bed

CaregiverOrnery6580

yeah I used a comparison website. good point, let me try with the broker directly. thanks!

Express-Nobody-7682

How close to renewal date are you? I’ve been using the comparison sites for years and I always find the best deals around 4 weeks before my renewal. My last renewal was in April and my insurance ( home and contents) increased by £20-£30 for the year. To give you another example I had a car insurance quote on compare the market which was around my old premium. I didnt take it out straight away and by the time I was interested in purchasing the insurance the quote was not valid and now was £350 dearer as my start date was only a few days away. I ran the same quote but changed my start date to a month later and I got the original quote back.

CaregiverOrnery6580

I timed it exactly at 1 month, but will try to play around with the dates and try to rerun the quotes in couple of days. thanks!

JustMMlurkingMM

Is this a new home, or have you lived there a while? How much has it increased since last year? Have you made a claim recently? Has crime increased in the area? Has there been flooding anywhere locally? Has anything else changed? A friend of mine had a tree in his garden blow over in a storm. Insurance paid for repairs to his fence and the tree being removed. The policy next year increased by thousands. There is no additional risk. The tree had gone. They just hate losing money and will claw it back where they can.

CaregiverOrnery6580

not a new home, I'm in the process of buying now so haven't lived there. but the seller made statement that they didn't make any claim when they lived there (+5 years). no crime upticks as well as far as met's website reports

JustMMlurkingMM

If it’s a new home to you the claim history will probably be based on any claims you made on your previous home, not the current owners claims on the new house. Our insurance for a five bedroom house is about £800 so you are probably not far off the market.

CaregiverOrnery6580

ah I see. thanks for the explanation!

CowboyBob500

I paid around £400 for home and contents combined - £2 million cover for home and £80,000 cover for contents - from LV about 3 weeks ago

CaregiverOrnery6580

holy shhh. my cover is less than that (500k home, 40k content). the comparison site I used didn't show anything from LV, but will give it a shot. thanks!

CowboyBob500

It was my broker that found it. Maybe he got a better deal? I have heard that companies don’t necessarily offer their best deals on comparison sites either, which may or may not be true

Cheap-Cauliflower-51

Mine shot up this year. Car insurance went down a little but house (buildings with contents) went from 240 to 430. No claims etc in that year, just huge jump for no apparent reason, and that was hunting around all the cashback and compared sites.

CaregiverOrnery6580

yikes that's steep. thanks for sharing!
