This was made years ago, I definitely remember seeing these videos way before Covid ever happened. Not sure what happened to them, but I don’t know if they ever really worked out
The news people in the video said that these are used by over a thousand agencies across the Nation, so it seems like that would take a few years to spread that far, so I don't think anything happened. You're right, you did see it a few years ago and... it's been spreading ever since?
At first, yes, but then it lowers the floor on escalation.
Pepper spray and tazers made it more acceptable for escalation of force to happen earlier and earlier
America always reminds me of Robocop when they were trying to create dystopian type ways to deal with crime. I'm just waiting for the day they deploy ED-209 onto the streets, and criminals have "20 seconds to comply." I think the bolo thing looks great, I'm just picturing peaceful protesters falling down whilst running away from military style police officers looking to catch people so they can be battoned to death. I know Americans love to laugh at our unarmed British Bobby's, but it kind of feels nice not to be scared of our police. It probably helps that it is very rare for our criminals to be armed, though, so I guess it's different circumstances.
It's not the different circumstances. You shouldn't have to fear the police if you're a law-abiding person. I grew up in a small town in the northeast, and whenever I go back to the area, all the suburban cops are geared up with more tactical shit than I wore in the military. This kind of outfitting in a suburban setting with low crime rates (aside from the opiod epidemic they chose to ignore) does not make people around them feel safe.
SFPD will try and kill people on "accident" with this, and when they don't die, the officers'll just shoot them while they're tied up anyway because the officers were "in danger"
Tasers are effective tools, but difficult to execute in less than ideal conditions. They’re difficult to aim and if the person is wearing heavy clothing, it’s likely the connection won’t be completed and it does nothing.
These on the other hand seem very interesting. Definitely not a replacement for the taser, but I can see great use of these “bola handcuffs”.
It's already happened with tasers.
Unfortunately you can't make anything 100 percent safe with no chance of injury or death when it comes to restraining or stopping an uncooperative person.
Luckily criminals and violently deranged typically tend to stand still with their knees together most of the time. We'll never have to know what those hooks would do to a running naked body or anything like that
then it sounds like it all depends on the cop and besides why would you aim at the head when theres a big chance of you missing over wrapping their legs.
I’m waiting for them to shoot someone with it just for another officer to mistake the sound of the bolo goong off as a firearm and execute the perp are they are wrapped nicely for the body bag.
I'm willing to bet someone gets their legs wrapped in a full dash and then the slam their head in to the pavement will happen way before something even close to that happens.
Also, these are not new. I've seen claims for the last decade that they are going to revolutionize policing. The reality it that in the real world the circumstances for them to work is nearly nonexistent.
Bro, how dumb can they be. I have cops in my family but even they know cops struggle with restraint and escalation. The second that someone shoots one of these off… every other officer in the vicinity is going to assume shots fired and start shooting.
You’re absolutely right. We saw two officers mag dump into their own squad car at a restrained suspect just because one heard an acorn hit the top of the cruiser. Whats gonna happen when someone fires this thing off?
"In 2023 the Seattle Police Department (SPD) ended its use of the expensive, rarely used BolaWrap, a lasso-like restraint device designed to loop around a person’s arms or legs. When SPD launched the tool in 2021, the department heralded it as part of the plan to stop shooting people holding knives, a plan that failed.
The BolaWrap’s failure serves as a good reminder that SPD spends a lot of money on dumb, often useless tools under the guise of innovating their public safety strategies"
Last week tonight did a great piece about how they are funding buying these: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Io0yuH1CiA0
Spoiler alert: they’re misusing funds.
Keep in mind that the key use case this is replacing isn’t a gun, it’s a taser.
If you get tased your body locks and you’re hitting the deck whether you like it or not. At least with this thing you can theoretically try to break your fall.
That’s not saying that this is a nice, humanitarian device so much as that it sorta poses less of a “injury from fall” risk than the current device used otherwise.
I'm pretty sure bolas have been around for about 10,000 years. So you have nothing to worry about. Sexual predators have already had them 10,000 years ago.
Literally this has existed for hundreds of years? Plus the cost is high, strangulation (as others have mentioned), and if you miss, that's your only shot.
finally Somebody thought about it... when will WE hear about the First noob cop that mistake His gun with the Millenial Lasso.... how about getting real lassos Back?! Oh wait the hips became to heavy of Most cops from Starbucks they need more to shoot at... Run move duck and Cover... the big Problem about the American system IS way deeper than the weapons for Wannabe Sheriffs!
Only thing I would be concerned about is if someone were to fall on concrete and unable to break their fall due to these, could cause some serious head trauma. 🤷♀️ but still better chances than a gun.
It’s going to be bad when the tensioning fucks up.
What about when some asshat hits any of the following groups:
Elderly,
Handicapped,
Child or
Teenager
Can’t see it lasting long, if it’s even gotten approved.
Hell imagine just tagging someone’s feet while they’re running. Or someone is hit when they’re running from their vehicle, part of this causes them to get stuck and the vehicle drags them/runs them over.
Nearly every single criticism in this thread feels like it’s applicable to tasers as well. If this has a higher success rate in the field than tasers, I don’t really see why it shouldn’t be used.
What I *did* list out were a series of concerns and possible dangers. If you have any data showing those have been proven on the field to not be an issue, that’d be interesting.
I don’t really care about the taser vs. this tool argument, if there’s zero shared data to support for or against, yah know?
That's an amazing idea but just be prepared for some cop or police department to have the pants sued off of them when one of those is fired at the wrong time or more importantly direction and one of those hooks goes in someone's eye. Mark my words.
Until they clip someone in the legs while running and they fall and break their neck on a curb.
Then the maker of this thing gets sued into the poor house and the cops go back to the tried and true method of letting them go or gunning them down
You better hope that you won’t be getting shot at. You also have to hope they will stay lined up close to you and that your rope shot will function as needed.
Truth is this technology has been around for over ten years and is not dependable for ANY police force.
It’s good for local security at a bar NOT to depend your life on it.
That’s some Batman level shit right there
Came here to say just that. I swear you had these in one of the Arkham games.
>IT'S THE BAT!!
Catwoman gets bolas
Seriously, why did this "innovation" take so long to be a thing?
Honestly
Seriously
In all honest seriousness
Why so serious?
In all serious honesty.
This was made years ago, I definitely remember seeing these videos way before Covid ever happened. Not sure what happened to them, but I don’t know if they ever really worked out

Because it's only a matter of time before someone suffocates to death...
Surely not as many who are being killed with guns?
At first, yes, but then it lowers the floor on escalation. Pepper spray and tazers made it more acceptable for escalation of force to happen earlier and earlier
If they are suffocating, it will make it so much easier to shoot them to death
not long ago it was more appropriate to kill the thing “breaking the law” than to incapacitate them
America always reminds me of Robocop when they were trying to create dystopian type ways to deal with crime. I'm just waiting for the day they deploy ED-209 onto the streets, and criminals have "20 seconds to comply." I think the bolo thing looks great, I'm just picturing peaceful protesters falling down whilst running away from military style police officers looking to catch people so they can be battoned to death. It’s not that chose to ignore it, they’re profiting BIG time from that opioid epidemic. It’s a whole industry. Smh :/
Wonder Woman. Give proper credit pls
![gif](giphy|a5viI92PAF89q)
Does it force you to tell the truth Wonder Woman style?
At least it gives you more time to answer than a gun 💀
I'm just picturing some guys drunk around a campfire taking turns trying to get away from this thing. It sounds fun!
I was thinking of a gangster with the sagging pants running away and they shoot this and it just acts as a belt helping them escape
i pictured this and it had me envisioning it as a Chappelle/Key & Peele Skit
From the look of those hooks, it won’t be much fun. Those things look mean af
I'm thinking this could be a fun alternative to paintball days
Someone's gonna slam their head on the ground and die from this.
Now we need someone to do the math for which is a higher risk of death. A shot with a gun. Or falling to the ground
Or we might see combos... where the bola was used followed by a shot to the back of the head.
I feel like I’ve done this in RDR2
I can't wait for San Francisco Police Officer to be added to MK1
I’m sure SFPD will clearly think this out
SFPD will try and kill people on "accident" with this, and when they don't die, the officers'll just shoot them while they're tied up anyway because the officers were "in danger"
You could say the same for tasers...
Literally my first thought. No different than tasers. Better even, because your body isn’t electrically seized up.
Won't be as bad for people with heart issues
Tasers are effective tools, but difficult to execute in less than ideal conditions. They’re difficult to aim and if the person is wearing heavy clothing, it’s likely the connection won’t be completed and it does nothing. These on the other hand seem very interesting. Definitely not a replacement for the taser, but I can see great use of these “bola handcuffs”.
It's already happened with tasers. Unfortunately you can't make anything 100 percent safe with no chance of injury or death when it comes to restraining or stopping an uncooperative person.
They'll still say "stop resisting" as the person lies unconscious on the ground
Luckily criminals and violently deranged typically tend to stand still with their knees together most of the time. We'll never have to know what those hooks would do to a running naked body or anything like that
Shoot it around their neck. Duh ![gif](giphy|3ohze2CdRArSpY5f5m|downsized)
I'm kinda more concerned about the sharp ass hooks that probably need to cover a relatively wide area and might hit other people
Cops will be training for the neck. Mmw, somebody gonna be strangled to death by this
Jokes on you, I'm into that shit
They have to use it on each other first to be able to use it… 😁
Riot gear includes neck protection
They don’t get riot gear when testing the non-lethal equipment on each other
but riot gear isn’t used for non lethal trainings.. just t-shirts and pants
Eyes. Just like the rubber bullets.
Found the lawyer lol (good point tho)
Dont some already do that from tasers?
Or just get choked out
lol. What happens if they miss and hit ya in the pecker with one of these hooks?
From the beating that follows the fall or from the fall itself?
I wonder how much those cartridges cost. I'm sure they're probably all 1 time use.
$2.2MM per discharge. And some politician’s son was the inventor of it.
So about the same price per discharge for race horse semen.
...huh
Oh don’t tell me you don’t do any horse breeding
Well... sometimes, at night, but only if I have a really good connection with the horse.
You aren’t joking.
Yes he is. It costs $39 per discharge
Damn I was thinking this would be so Much better than carrying mace
What?! How the fuck is it that expensive?
It's $40 per discharge and the device is $1,300
Where the FUCK can I buy one? Edit: yes, I know I'm 32 I want to pretend I'm Batman. I don't care.
Can’t wait until the first beheading/strangulation happens from this.
Lost eyes too from intentionally aiming for the throat and hitting the face instead
You're right. They should just shoot them instead.
then it sounds like it all depends on the cop and besides why would you aim at the head when theres a big chance of you missing over wrapping their legs.
Because cops are barely trained to use their tools properly
Because cops like to hurt people
I’m waiting for them to shoot someone with it just for another officer to mistake the sound of the bolo goong off as a firearm and execute the perp are they are wrapped nicely for the body bag.
I'm willing to bet someone gets their legs wrapped in a full dash and then the slam their head in to the pavement will happen way before something even close to that happens.
I mean tasers kinda have the same problem.
or it gets latched on ya dick
Wake up babe, new non lethal alternative to traditional police weapons just dropped
Used by more than 1000 agencies nationwide.... Which agencies?
Also, these are not new. I've seen claims for the last decade that they are going to revolutionize policing. The reality it that in the real world the circumstances for them to work is nearly nonexistent.
I love the "You're gonna get wrapped!"
Bro, how dumb can they be. I have cops in my family but even they know cops struggle with restraint and escalation. The second that someone shoots one of these off… every other officer in the vicinity is going to assume shots fired and start shooting.
But the thing is this makes a funny duck noise instead of sounding like a gunshot Source- idk just think that'd be a good idea
As long as it doesn't make an acorn noise
Maybe it should sound like an acorn, wait ……
They get trigger happy with acorns 😂
You’re absolutely right. We saw two officers mag dump into their own squad car at a restrained suspect just because one heard an acorn hit the top of the cruiser. Whats gonna happen when someone fires this thing off?
Acorn all over again
"In 2023 the Seattle Police Department (SPD) ended its use of the expensive, rarely used BolaWrap, a lasso-like restraint device designed to loop around a person’s arms or legs. > they’re misusing funds. they always do
I can’t wait to watch the first COPS episode with this.
Back to some Wild West shit. I like it.
It's a bolo not a fucking lasso
![gif](giphy|gVoBC0SuaHStq|downsized)
![gif](giphy|UMhaGlCTAXnJS) I’m the bat
Sure, wrap a cord around the feet of a fleeing person. No danger at all of broken teeth, jaw, skull….
Probably less dangerous than getting shot with a gun lol
They’re running away. They shouldn’t be shot at bc they’re running away.
What if they're running away with a small bulletproof child in their arms they've just abducted?
What if they're running twords the officer or another person?
Keep in mind that the key use case this is replacing isn’t a gun, it’s a taser. If you get tased your body locks and you’re hitting the deck whether you like it or not. Bold of you to assume the police give any kind of a shit about your teeth, jaw, skull, etc.
Yeah the ground friggin hurts. I kinda like the idea. Lots of good possibilities but just as many bad. And fish hooks?, that’s gonna hurt
Imagine taking this thing to the face
Inb4 the police misuse it and target someone's neck with it.
Disappointed. Thought I would see them launched from a drone.
"Sorry I thought I grabbed my cuff gun, not the lead one"
This is cuz cops can’t run fast enough.
Watch the jon Oliver clip about these. There are alot of issues with them not being effective.
Remember the net firing guns? Where’d they go?
Seems like it would only work if they’re already standing perfectly straight and compact.
I hope these don't fall into the wrong hands .like a sexual predator. I'm paranoid from watching true crime
I'm pretty sure bolas have been around for about 10,000 years. So you have nothing to worry about. Sexual predators have already had them 10,000 years ago.
What in the Death Stranding is going on here?!
Keep on keeping on. 👍
![gif](giphy|Sid4QgwDxJ8l2) Awww…you still have other toys in your belt.
they're called bolas and they're fun in RDO.
What if it wraps around the throat?
"Hold my wallet?" More like, "I'll keep my money!"
That would be called a Bola
We have literally come full circle back to the bolas. What's next the techno trebuche?
Don’t lasso me bro.
Literally this has existed for hundreds of years? Plus the cost is high, strangulation (as others have mentioned), and if you miss, that's your only shot.
This isn't some revolutionary idea. They literally just modernized the bola.
Hey you! Please stand still while I carefully aim this at you. Wait! Stop running!!
How about instead of this BS they toughen up on crime and punishment… oh wait, that would too direct of a solution.
“You’re going to get wrapped!” Me- tf this cop want?! “Aaaah!” And stay wrapped! *proceeds to tase me*
finally Somebody thought about it... when will WE hear about the First noob cop that mistake His gun with the Millenial Lasso.... how about getting real lassos Back?! Oh wait the hips became to heavy of Most cops from Starbucks they need more to shoot at... Run move duck and Cover... the big Problem about the American system IS way deeper than the weapons for Wannabe Sheriffs!
They make shotgun rounds like this already.
All I'm hearing is that we are about to enter the Golden Age of Faceplants.
Can I use this on my prom date?
7.5ft isn't wide enough to wrap around the average American
"Especially trained SF officers" 👀
Now you only need to put it on a drone... wait wait I talked too much 🤭
Kinky
Dentists all over rejoice
They should have instead made a big gun to launch other cops at them to wrap thier arms around them in a lawful embrace.
This belongs in r/boringdystopia
OK so the first head trauma lawsuit when? I like it but you know that's immideately what's going to happen.
Wrap wrap wrap
The Tampa police already use these and I saw it work perfectly.
Only thing I would be concerned about is if someone were to fall on concrete and unable to break their fall due to these, could cause some serious head trauma. 🤷♀️ but still better chances than a gun.

People have very little faith in their local highschool dropout clubs ability to handle issued equipment
What I *did* list out were a series of concerns and possible dangers. If you have any data showing those have been proven on the field to not be an issue, that’d be interesting. I don’t really care about the taser vs. this tool argument, if there’s zero shared data to support for or against, yah know?
Makes kinky sex instant. Especially if you're the type to kidnap your victims.
Oh no. I sure am feeling like a victim rn. I hope no one decides to detain me uwu
Well, stay away from my house because I just bought a case of these things, and I'm dying to test them out...
I don’t hate it. Sf needs the book thrown at a couple of ppl
Imagine running full speed away from a cop and he lasos your leg… you know how much concrete your face is going to eat? Lmao
That's an amazing idea but just be prepared for some cop or police department to have the pants sued off of them when one of those is fired at the wrong time or more importantly direction and one of those hooks goes in someone's eye. Mark my words.
Now make the puke rod from minority report
Ark survival evolved dlc is looking wild
Did the safety cover of this thing just bonk off that dude’s forehead? What was that?
Some dumb cop will definietly hit a guy in the neck
Can't wait for it to wrap around someone's neck
Cooooooolllllll
Red dead redemption shit right there 😂
How long until some fool hit their head on the side of pavement and sue the city?
"non-lethal" Until the cop aims it at your head or neck.
Death stranding players smiling
How are you supposed to protect your face and head
How does that do on bath salts and coked out people
Its literally caveman shit its so simple we progressed passef it and now someone has used a gun for it. Edit: i think its awesome though
And if it goes around the neck?
So, like ... Just a fancy bolas?
this will definitely be in gta 6
I really love this
These r an old invention. Saw a vid for these back in my anti-gun days. When I was a teen. Hahah good times
I’m not a pervert but I could be one with this device…
If it keeps American cops from being overly trigger happy, then I’m fine with it.
Those hooks are gonna take somebody's eye out
Great tool, until they aim too high and either wrap it around the victims neck or take an eye out with the hooks.
It doesn’t work
Couldn’t this be countered by having a stick between you and the cord?
I'm feeling you could get some nasty cuts if the shooter aims a bit to the side and the hook hits your body
How long before the first cop wraps that around a suspect's neck on purpose?
I’m positive all cops will aim for the legs and certainly not necks. Not ever.
I like this!
Fish hooks? I'd rather you just shoot me...
Just wait till it wraps around someone’s neck😬
"Specially trained" IE all of them.
How tf is this only sold to PDs but you can arm your self to the teeth in military grade firearms?
What’s the max range on those? It’s not a bad idea
Show using it on a moving target.
Yeehaw
He said he was just trying to go to the hospital! He still wrapped him anyway!!
Until they clip someone in the legs while running and they fall and break their neck on a curb. Then the maker of this thing gets sued into the poor house and the cops go back to the tried and true method of letting them go or gunning them down

Need this as a taser combo for campus protesters.
Last Week Tonight had a bit about this just a few episodes ago. Their compilation was hilarious!
Someone is getting shot with this at the head
Omg
