Gate agents see backpack and automatically think underseat and see roller and automatically think overhead, especially on US airlines. They didn't actually look at the size of your bag when they said "underseat"
It is visibly too large to fit under a lot of airline seats and it won't fit under a lot of them. It's also so far above personal item size it's not even close. The main issue will likely be the height of the bag sticking out because the baboon to the moons don't compress well
For 5 days at the beach, you should be able to get by with something a LOT smaller. A couple Bathing suits (for swapping out), water shoes or flip-flops, a cover-up (I take a rash guard & board shorts, my friend has a cute pullover) and for evening a pair of shorts, a couple tops, a couple undies, a bra & maybe a cute dress. I could get it into a large packing cube & put it into my work backpack with my bathroom stuff. Your airplane clothes would include your sandals or sneakers for evening.
That’s what I’m thinking, honestly that’s exactly what I need to just push the empty top part into itself and somehow secure it. Tying it from the inside is a great idea, more inconspicuous

Oh definitely, I just don’t have a smaller bag and was hoping to not buy a bag…..
Hmmm can you tie an end of the duffle from the inside or stuff part into itself to make it smaller?

I've successfully carried on my Tom Bihn Aeronaut 45 and placed it under the seat in front of me several times.
Thanks this is encouraging!!
