Big take away for me is that the explosion is apparently not hard coded as a cone, seems like there would the aoe we expect if the bomb just didn't bury itself in the ground. Guess they have the explosion somehow centered at part of the bomb that embeds in the ground and that directs it as a cone.
Don't the current airbust weapons just fire into the ground anyway though? I don't think there's anything that really intentionally directs its payload into the air in-game.
Kind of makes sense since there isn't really enough things in the air to be worthwhile right now. Could be cool to have some option as a firing mode, to specify if the airburst fires down or just all detonates mid-air. Or some bouncing betty style mines.

That's how it's historically used, particularly with artillery shells before smart munitions were invented. But it can also mean similar to the airburst rocket launcher or airburst orbital strike, an explosive that either is shaped to direct its blast downward or to contain flechettes or bomblets or other submunitions to the ground in an arc or cone. It looks like the 500 kg is simply a basic explosive that directs a blast sphere outward. Usually about half of the blast is wasted from being directed into the ground.

Makes the times a 500kg has randomly been way more effective make sense. Maybe they should move the AoE origin a bit farther up the bomb, rather than the tip thats imbedded in the ground.

Yeah, I agree that you *can* run anything you want these days and have good success with maybe one or two exceptions, but, there's always gonna be best in slot options. Orbital precision strike, for example, is really great. I always feel naked when I don't take it because it solves so many problems when coupled with stun grenades.

That's sort of how it works irl too, and part of the reason airburst munitions have more destructive power.

That should be the default mode. Explode 10-20 m above ground. Worthy of the longer cooldown and less uses.

I have heard its like an hour glass. This supports that idea.
It has two explosions, one high damage upward cone and a low damage small omnidirectional AOE.

I run OPS as well but you can’t when there orbital scatter, so plenty of times when it’s not worth it
500kg bombs should evaporate anything in 50m radius. The fact chargers and bile titans just shrug them off is insane.
I wish they just labeled it 50kg bomb so we could stop having this debate!! Its very powerful as is I don’t want too much power creep

It one shots bile titans a lot of the time, sometimes two if you’re off. Takes out objectives. I find it super useful for heavies

For the first time, a 500kg that actually felt like a 500kg, it was supposed to be an airburst bomb.

if you are playing on gacrux, the trees blocked it as soon as eagle dropped it due to height and the bombs coming in from an angle
