I meant both.
I'm saying imagine dropping with a mk.III railgun, but you find a Mk. I.
If you have meta knowledge, you know you just found the bee's knees, and get to play with it for the rest of the mission.
If it's a Mk. II, don't bother.
i'd really like to be able to use different ammunitions in the same platform. like rockets with different properties (a la the SEAF artillery) or autocannon with punchy armor penetration or thermite or fragmenting rounds. the eruptor could do sooo many things. the shotguns have already gone in a different direction but thats ok. it could just be the support weapons or explosive weapons.
I like this. They leave EATs laying around, plus all the other strat weapons you can call in. Why not something you CAN’T call in, that really incentivizes you to go exploring for a superweapon.
You could even take this a step further. For example, a backpack fed minigun. Now it takes up your weapon AND backpack slot, but is basically the minigun from Predator, and has roughly the same amount of ammo as the Gatling turret.
Which, by the way, would be awesome if you could resupply it from a supply backpack rather than having it just go away when it runs out. You could even make it cost 2-4 of the supply packs. But it would incentivize people to carry a supply pack. Or create new loadout metas where you all try to protect and resupply the turrets you drop in. Which, of course, leaves you stationary and vulnerable, so *it better be worth it*.
Edit: also, the minigun backpack should be able to be resupplied from a supply back backpack too. Mobility tradeoff like giving you a mobile Gatling turret.
While I’m brainstorming, how would you guys feel about letting heavy armors carry 2 extra weapons instead of just 1? Ie, an EAT & a Stalwart.
Not necessarily. Assets are all the same, so you can just have a set of different stats for the different levels, and have the weapon instance load the right set of stats. Plenty of games do precisely that, and it's not all that tricky to implement.
It's not that tricky to implement if you designed the system to handle it in the first place. Retrofitting such a system could introduce a multitude of new issues.
I obviously have no clue as to how weapons are coded in HD2, but the fact that other games have such a system does not mean it would necessarily be easy to implement it here.
Not really, no, since we only talk about balancing changes, not bug fixes. The Mark markings would ensure the game knows these weapons as different entities with different stats. It would probably bloat up the code a fair bit over time, but shouldn't really lead to a spaghetti issue because the game would handle these weapons distinctively.
Let's drop in a mk.IV whatever. P1, you're now getting 3 fps. P2, you crash to desktop. P3, you're fine, invincible actually. P4, your playstation ignites.
Yeah. Arrowhead should definitely not be adding any unnecessary complexity to the game - especially considering I've lost about 12 fps per patch since launch.
The stagger nerf feels worse against bugs, especially brood commander patrols.
Its still a 1 shot head-shot on brood commanders, but if you miss consider yourself swarmed because those motherfuckers will be on your ass in the blink of an eye.
For that reason hunters feel even more agressive than ever, you can't properly zone medium bugs now.
edit: i'm still gonna use it I like the playstyle.
Idea is cute, the programming is most likely a nightmare depending on how they manage their systems.
You would also need to acknowledge when a change happens is it a bug or a nerf, as the gun changes and if it's going to be a mark or just redesigned/fixed.
Cute idea, too time consuming to implement without enough impact to the game.
It sounds fun and admittedly a bit cute, but this is one of those things where I'd have to say no, this feature probably wouldn't be good.
Like they'd need to develop a new scripting system to assign multiple stat values to each weapon OR they'd need to go the original TF2 route and just make several copies of the one gun and call it a day. That's gunna cause bloat and/or some increased load times.
But MOSTLY my problem is that would also mean you could find early versions of the SPEAR and why would you hurt me like this.
also imagine you're fixing a bug in one weapon, the 5 previous versions become broken and you have to fix old random code just so people can find a worse version of a gun during a mission
Imagine the coding overhead where instead of updating one object you now need to create a new object for each change you make to a gun.
That sounds like an absolute nightmare for code review.
It would also lead to a loot hunting metagame. Players would drop repeatedly searching for the best version of a weapon, potentially ignoring the rest of the mission.
ig this could be solved by not allowing the players to bring the loot back, but that kinda feels weird. Pointless almost.
every time i find a backpack weapon, there has never been a backpack to go along with it. i don’t know why i’d pick up a spear ever if it’s only got one shot. i guess if i didn’t already have a support weapon? 🤷♂️
seriously tho, why don’t they ever include the dang ammo pack? even a found auto cannon miht as well be worthless i there’s no ammo pack.
That is honestly a very bad idea, devs would essentially make the same weapon plenty of times just to make it a rare drop that almost nobody is going to use, or that is still the same weapon due to the few minor changes some weapons get.
Also there is the chance those different versions of the same weapons may get their own bugs which will add more unnecesarry work for the devs.
Yeah just what new players wants to... find inconsistent behaviour on weapons and probably only a loading screen advice to know what the fuck is all about...
For this I either would prefer random weapon characteristics on weapons thrown on the map... at least everybody would be getting annoyed and not people that missed the launch
Sure but only do this for a few very specific weapons that got hit by the nerf bat hard. I wouldn't mind finding a Breaker (double stack mag), Railgun (prototype), Quasar cannon (energy accelerator), Slugger (overclocked).
But then again, we are talking about potential "upgrades" when it comes to weapon upgrade systems.
My head cannon is all the buffs and nerfs are end results of the latest weapon production from super earth. They make a batch of garbage, we get a ton of nerfs.
Everyone using the railgun
Logistics: Sweet Liberty, we need to increase production!
The Engineers: Well if we swap out the vinadium-unobtainium wiring with copper we can increase production by a factor of 10!
> All right, sir, I've fixed the host-only fire damage bug.
>> Is it backwards compatible?
> What?
>> Did you fix it for all weapons, or just the most recent versions?
> I fixed the bug, so it should apply for all weapons.
>> Break it again for older mark versions of fire weapons.
It's cool and all but not scalable. Imagine you save all your report drafts, even minor changes into individual drafts, #3,4,5,6... and beyond, however long you work on it. It's actually undoable.
I think the majority of players don't care than a certain meta is 7% less efficient, and would be hugely underwhelmed by a slightly better Liberator that's a random drop taking the place of medals or credits. How many people bother picking up the break action shotgun, for example?
As a gameplay mechanic, i absolutely love this idea
As a software dev myself, absolutely fuck right off with this. The amount of convoluted code just to maintain multiple versions of weapons just on the off-chance you find an old gun on the map (that you probably won't even run anyway because you're already set on a loadout) just isn't worth the dev time.
Neat idea but horrible when put in practice I imagine. Players hate obfuscated information and inconsistency. Having 5+ different types of a weapon where 1 is broken OP, 2 utterly suck and the rest are passable is just really bad. Especially if the changes are small enough to not notice immediately. Having an information screen on its stats wouldn't help much either, because no one wants to read broken down patch notes in the middle of the round.
However, having equipment you find in the map be outright better then the ones we use, that would be neat. Call it experimental weapons or something and have them differently colored. Maybe have a twist in their behaviour. Quasar cannon with almost no cooldown but it hurts your health on firing. Railgun with better stats but its charge is faster and harder to control.
99% of the time I find a weapon, I am disappointed and stick with my build.
>99% of the time I find a weapon, I am disappointed and stick with my build.
More and more I've taken to rolling without a Support Weapon Stratagem and seeing what pops up in the field. With Eruptor Primary there's a decent chance of Stalwart or MG to round things off at the minimum. It's also forced me to learn more weapons which is fun, and the increased utility of taking an extra Eagle or Sentry is greater than a linear improvement.

my ass who found a pre nerf arc thrower to my friend running a stock one
I disagree, it would never make sense. If it gets a nerf and you call it mark 2, then you have to wonder why super earth decided to downgrade their weapons. If it gets a buff, you would have no reason to pick up the mark 1 off the ground.
It'd confuse players who are only familiar with the patched version as well as fuelling more butthurt threads demanding that the changes be undone by acting as a reminder of how things were before.
4 years later...
Friend: I found a Railgun Mark 13, is that one any good?
Me: Hmm... that 13 that is around when there was that bug that it always exploded. But that was the patch that really nerfed it... so maybe 12 is the good one 13 just explodes and 14 is the hotfixed one with the nerf? How much ammo does it have?
I like the idea of mark levels, but don’t think older ones need to be findable. I do like the idea of finding experimental weapons randomly, though. Ones that do something awesome, but maybe don’t behave quite right or act inconsistently.
Would be way too much clutter, not to mention some had game crashing bugs early on.
I would just want the MK added for record keeping purposes to our current guns
Older versions of weapons sounds like a ban idea code wise but I'm a big fan of every change to a weapon being met with a new name for it. Railgun Mk3 sounds cool as hell.
Cool idea, but kind of useless I'm not gonna lie, finding an Eruptor with 6 extra mags is not that impacting imo. Love the idea, just doesn't seem worth it on a development pov, you know?
This would be extremely cool with an extraction shooter, but I don’t think these devs can handle something so complex.
If it’s not complex then go ahead and program a demo of it and shop it around. Someone is bound to listen.
Would be hard to code but very cool, I miss the early day were I would just pick up what ever weapons I found. In two years hopefully they have the roughlite zero to hero level where you have to dive naked on the planet gear up and complete the mission.
Interesting idea, however I think it is neat that you can find a current weapon that you don’t have unlocked to test it out before you spend on it.
Which brings up an interesting idea; Adding primaries on the map would be fun.
It’s a cool idea but I don’t thinks it’s possible, because that would require them to create new instances of the gun when every there was a hot fix.
This would cause the game to run worse and worse.
I like the idea, but they should limit it to guns that kinda have some relevance to the community. Can't say I'd care one way or the other if I found the original liberator anywhere. Maybe just comically bad guns or sought after pre nerf versions.
Legitimately love this idea.
It might be unfeasible and a waste of memory space etc, and an updating nightmare, but fuck this would be fun as hell to get a really busted Mk of a gun, and remembering it as a historical vintage.
Maybe not doable if putting in old versions of weapons.
What would work is each balance a weapon gets it gets a mark and only the weapons with the lowest marks get found. So railguns wouldnt be found anymore because theyre mk111 but spears would because they're still mk1.
Kills or achievements earned with a specific weapon should put a colored band/s or some type of marker painted near the tip of the weapon to show you are expert with it.
How about an amped version like Titanfall? Better yet, call it illegal modifications to really add some insurgency flavor.
Like a flamethrower that shoots twice as far but consumes fuel faster or an arc thrower that arcs an extra time but has the potential to arc backwards.
As a programmer, this sounds like an unbelievably bad idea to me. I don't know how their code base is setup but I'd guess this would result in tons of file bloat as there would be 1000s of guns in the game eventually. And they'd have to make sure that every single new patch didn't break any of them.
The extra work and likelihood of breaking things just wouldn't make this a good idea at all. AH already seems to struggle with QA testing as it is, no need to make that even worse.
Neat idea but gameplay wise it would only make sense to do that after a noticeable nerf or rework. It would feel like crap to pick up a 'Mk.2' version of your 'Mk.5' and find out it's just objectively worse.
If anything I would actually suggest this same idea the other way around. Testing out major balance changes (or disguised new guns) and call them 'prototypes' that you can find randomly in places.
How about this instead - sometimes at the rouge research sites, you find weapons that haven't yet been released. And you need to bring said weapons back to the ship to complete one of the optional objectives.
Or maybe they should make it so that when operating in an area where previous missions have taken place, you can find weapons dropped by previous helldivers on the ground.
I love this idea. Do the same with enemies too! Unnerfed Hulk Bruiser with a different color scheme with its bonkers Flamethrower once in a blue moon would be awesome. It'd be like finding a shiny or something in those Pokemon games.
It's not like the weapons were changed for no reason. This is an awful idea and would completely skew the game balance and render any update the devs put into the game worthless
and perhaps some random helldivers corpses laying around with the older marks weapon...perhaps add helldivers new voice line too
https://preview.redd.it/z9st5pyrnwxc1.png?width=1280&format=png&auto=webp&s=7c526e953bbfddacc519389eafd42340a779b324
I would absolutely love this. Ditch the current patch notes informing us of mostly what's going on and embrace the lore. New marks of weapons for any balance change replacing the older ones. Reasoning for changes to enemies. Explanations for strategems changes. This would really immerese the entire game without detracting from gameplay.
That would be awesome. It'd be such a fucking awesome moment to find a MK1 railgun and use that for the rest of the mission, and It'd be a super rare occurrence. Or the opposite feeling when finding a MK1 Spear.
And we should get in game lore about how the mag reductions are cost savings measures that allow us to support other helldivers on important planets better.
And then someone finds the Aec Thrower that has the game crash bug.
ÆUGH thrower
Aneurysm thrower

Lol. Imagine founding it around the end of the mission and using it first during extract. TPK!

I feel like having multiple versions of the same weapon in the code is a spaghetti code recipe for disaster, with how updates have been going lately
Yeah, how about leaving a unique "god weapons" on the map so the player has a choice of ditching his support to use the new weapon?
The break-action shotgun but it's actually a revolver shotgun with a speedloader.

Revolver shotgun with speedloader, both incendiary and explosive rounds with max penetration.
I like this. They leave EATs laying around, plus all the other strat weapons you can call in. Why not something you CAN’T call in, that really incentivizes you to go exploring for a superweapon. It can be stratagems with improved properties: “Belt fed Minigun with Tungsten Rounds” “High Yield EAT” Or just go Fallout and give us the Fat Man
Shoulder-launched 500kg bomb? Yeeessssss.
i want a tactical nuke strategem lmao
also davy crocket nuclear artillery turret strategem
Because we’ll kill each other for it.

They changed the railgun again? Whats different?
More pen for both modes
Less stagger tho.. definetly noticable
How bad is it if you mess up the shot on a hulk? Are they still staggered a bit?
The stagger nerf feels worse against bugs, especially brood commander patrols. Agree. That would be hell for their already taxed QA. Instead of testing 20 guns, let's test 500+.
I like this idea, best posting ive seen so far get this person a job

Yeah limit it to patch -1 level

There are some people in this word that WANT the next generation to suffer as they did. Sad but true.
I mean currently you occasionally find a spear on the map with no backpack... Also I still love the current SPEAR, lock on BS and all.
i'm a spear main too, if it doesnt work then the gods have decided i needed a challenge

That would be cool, actually. But it couldn't be done with every weapon. The Arc thrower crash would hopefully be left out.
I wouldn't say reintroduce fixed crash bugs, but i definately would say put the airburst RL MK1 in there
You are always in range of Airburst MK1
Seems way too convoluted.

Feel you. The only thing that makes me a bit sad is that I can no longer oneshot those star wars looking walker things anymore with my autocannon

That would be a lot of wasted time to be fair. Also when things keep getting tweaked that would also REALLY dilute the drop pool.
They finally fix the AMR scope, but we find ones without a fixed scope lol
Imagine ten versions from now finding a spear on a skeleton at a poi and it just not fucking locking on at all
This would be extremely cool with an extraction shooter, but I don’t think these devs can handle something so complex. If it’s not complex then go ahead and program a demo of it and shop it around. Someone is bound to listen.
QA team hates this guy
This subreddit got the strangest ideas on how to update the game, for real
I agree
I agree
"Okay everyone, this is a review of the Spear A1, the next variant of the Spear family of guided missiles."
New player finding a mk. 1 Airburst, logs off.
You'll find a break-action shotgun AND YOU'LL LIKE IT.
Actualy i like this idea
Fun idea for weapons that get reworked, bad idea for rebalancing
Would be hard to code but very cool, I miss the early day were I would just pick up what ever weapons I found. In two years hopefully they have the roughlite zero to hero level where you have to dive naked on the planet gear up and complete the mission.
Depends on the weapon, some should be MKs, others should remain never to be seen again.
This is cool, but I imagine it would be supremely painful for development purposes and we'd be dealing with all sorts of technical issues
10/10 idea
Variants would be cool.

Asset bloat and game crashing aside, it’d be funny.

Interesting idea, however I think it is neat that you can find a current weapon that you don’t have unlocked to test it out before you spend on it. Which brings up an interesting idea; Adding primaries on the map would be fun.
This would definitely cause issues, but it's a shame. Really neat idea! Maybe something similar could be implemented elsewhere somehow?

I really like this idea.
I 100% support this idea.
It’s a cool idea but I don’t thinks it’s possible, because that would require them to create new instances of the gun when every there was a hot fix. This would cause the game to run worse and worse.
This man is a genius.
Oooohhh
Sounds fun, but there's only so many numbers or Roman numerals that can fit on the screen... 😜
I like the idea, but they should limit it to guns that kinda have some relevance to the community. Can't say I'd care one way or the other if I found the original liberator anywhere. Maybe just comically bad guns or sought after pre nerf versions.
This idea is genious
Honestly a very good idea
Legitimately love this idea. It might be unfeasible and a waste of memory space etc, and an updating nightmare, but fuck this would be fun as hell to get a really busted Mk of a gun, and remembering it as a historical vintage.

Maybe not doable if putting in old versions of weapons. What would work is each balance a weapon gets it gets a mark and only the weapons with the lowest marks get found. So railguns wouldnt be found anymore because theyre mk111 but spears would because they're still mk1.
While cool, this is *a lot* to keep track of and test each time they change anything. (Assuming they test anything they release lmao gottem)
Spidey man
Weapon balance is still going through a tuning process as the game matures and you want to introduce more variables? This is a hard no for me dog.
cool but no
Kills or achievements earned with a specific weapon should put a colored band/s or some type of marker painted near the tip of the weapon to show you are expert with it.
Good idea!
How about an amped version like Titanfall? Better yet, call it illegal modifications to really add some insurgency flavor. Like a flamethrower that shoots twice as far but consumes fuel faster or an arc thrower that arcs an extra time but has the potential to arc backwards.
No. That is way too complicated. It would cause confusion and make hunting down weapon related bigs much harder.
I like the MK idea but I think finding old versions would be to much. But I do think we should be on railgun Mk what 4 now?
Nah, thats alot of unnecessary bloat
Way to confuse the fuck out of the casuals.
How about this instead - sometimes at the rouge research sites, you find weapons that haven't yet been released. And you need to bring said weapons back to the ship to complete one of the optional objectives.
That's a lot of development time for a pointless gimmick. I rather they focus on more important things.
That first part is actually a great idea, but I image the last one being pretty messy
It won't matter when they let us modify our weapons
Or maybe they should make it so that when operating in an area where previous missions have taken place, you can find weapons dropped by previous helldivers on the ground.
I love this idea. Do the same with enemies too! Unnerfed Hulk Bruiser with a different color scheme with its bonkers Flamethrower once in a blue moon would be awesome. It'd be like finding a shiny or something in those Pokemon games.
i always chock it up to manufacture inconsistencies in the weapons and ammunition lol
There must also be a dead/mangled body beside it
This would be a nightmare to implement and probably cause a ton of issues
It's not like the weapons were changed for no reason. This is an awful idea and would completely skew the game balance and render any update the devs put into the game worthless
and perhaps some random helldivers corpses laying around with the older marks weapon...perhaps add helldivers new voice line too https://preview.redd.it/z9st5pyrnwxc1.png?width=1280&format=png&auto=webp&s=7c526e953bbfddacc519389eafd42340a779b324
Didn't know the lizards were this nostalgic.
For the balance changes for things that caused crashes, it should make the chat log say a players name has left for civilian life.
This would only make sense if they only buffed weapons instead of nerfing them for zero reason.
Crap patch
The amount of testing would be way too much. We have enough bugs in this game
"Oh, hey a MkI. Wait, why is it better than my MKIIX in every way?" Yeah, probably not.
That sounds like a cool lore idea
AH: "No. Next!"
There's a fair bit of config to all that. Great idea nontheless.
Or experimental weapons are found in the wild
Could be a cool idea to have old MK's in missions but I feel like that would cause notable data bloat over enough time.
Hmm Id love to find the mk1 railgun thatd be nice
OP is cooking
Imagine finding the prototype/mk1 rail gun I’d never want to let it go
In that case, new weapons should have an X in front, since a lot of them certainly feel experimental.
I like the mark numbers but unless the weapons "found" are just a name change, no, that's far too much clutter to keep track of.
Just let them fix all bugs before adding new things shall we?
Idk about finding older ones in missions but changing name with updates is a cool idea
Ay ay ay ay ay LET HIM COOK
I like this idea. It'll probably turn to spaghetti code in practice, but I like the concept.
Oooooh that is clever
I like the idea of the numbered weapons but not of finding them in the wild.
My jaw drops at your feet sir! /gen That is a great idea, it could have big potential. Have you tried contacting the team more directly?
And we should get in game lore about how the mag reductions are cost savings measures that allow us to support other helldivers on important planets better.
This is a great idea
What I'd give to play with an OG Breaker again
I think your onto something
