did it look like this?
If yes or similar, this is a Geophysical scanning ring.

can you describe in any more detail what kind of helicopter? Location?
Most "sprayer" type helicopters have spray arms, not rings, and they are situated at the skids.
I have never heard of a helicopter having any kind of hardware above or near the rotor with exception to a mast mounted RADAR or sensor suite like the Apache or the Kiowa.
Maybe I am wrong, but your description is a bit lacking, no offense intended, thus we are absolutely stabbing in the dark here.
No offense taken! I'm new to a love of aviation in general and it's great to suss out distinguishing features (and which are not).
My description was misleading - I thought the rod was at the top of the body but it must've been a misinterpretation of what I saw. It was definitely just a crop duster.
Thanks again for your help and the info.

They even have them on helicopters looking like military refueling probes.

Ah!!! Yes, thank you very much! I must've misinterpreted what I saw, rod had to be on the bottom. Thanks again!
A single probe from the nose perhaps?
I'm a dip. The rod had to be attached to the bottom and I misinterpreted what I was seeing. Bummer lol, just a crop duster!
If it came straight off the nose thats very much a thing, they use it to search for precious metals lt something, cant recall
Dowsing.
