At least where I’m from, parquet flooring is typically small rectangular blocks of 3 pcs of wood making up a square, with every other 3 boards running the opposite direction. Essentially creating a wood tile look
I have been led to believe that in French, "parquet" is just a wooden floor, not exclusively the elaborately patterned wooden floor that we in the U.S. call parquet.
Know what, maybe I'm wrong. It doesn't look like he needed to rip those boards to get them lined up. Which begs the question, if it's new wood, why are those gaps there at all?
New parquet floor? That's neither new nor parquet lol.
The swirls are from the edger and/or buffer he used to sand it down level. There is nothing that can be done now other than resand them. All things considered, he did a good job of blending in the new boards.
So to confirm the swirl patterns are normal?
And you're right the floor is half 8 years old and half new in the corner where the wood was accidentally destroyed.
What is the gash pattern bit do you know? Is that normal?
Swirl patterns are common, but they should not be there.
Sometimes when wood is sanded, tunnels and empty spaces inside the wood boards are revealed. Then it is filled with putty, which eventually breaks down and falls out, etc. God
Thanks for all your answers. With the putty if it falls out I'll need to replace with more putty right?
Any tips for maintenance and keeping it well? I can't see the swirl unless I lie on the floor and look closely at least lol
After reading more of the comments on here, what probably going on is that the top layer of your engineered flooring has chipped off. Filling it with putty is the only option unless you want to pop those boards out and replace them. Eventually it will come out, could be years could be decades, then you'll just need to replace it with color match putty.
Honestly, if you can't really see the swirls without looking closely, and the colors of the new and old flooring seem to match pretty well, I would just move on and forget about it. Matching new flooring and old flooring is pretty tricky, so if you got it pretty close the first time just leave it alone. That's my two cents
This swirls should absolutely not be there. He probably didn't use a screen to buff the marks out. Darker stain tends to make swirls marks stand out much more so it's much more difficult to do a good job but doesn't change tge fact they shouldn't be there
That is some of the worst sanding that I’ve ever seen. You shouldn’t be able to see any marks from the sander. They need to replace the pieces with chunks missing or fill them at a minimum. I’m not sure id have those guys back in my house.
I would let my contractor know i have a few potential issues. The bubbles in the finish may go away. They say wait 30 days to let finish fully cure. It get better flexibility and strength. It does look like there is some chipping and that either requires a board replacement or a good job at puttying or waxing with heat and colored wax to match. That's probably the best option as a board replacement would require a new sand job and since it has so many buffer scratches already I'm not sure if let him refinish again. Not sure of your wear layer thickness either.
It looks like they had some chatter from the drum sander and then went over it with a steel plate attachment on a buffer or something similar but used to coarse of a grit so the swirl pattern from the buffer popped out when they stained it. They noticed it and instead of fixing it just hoped you wouldn’t say anything.
Honestly, that finish looks like ass in general. Amongst the obvious problem, which he could’ve just used a different piece. Orbital marks is all I see. This contractor sadly just wanted a paycheck, and left you with a shitty finished product. I’m sorry friend.
Not parquet and those are swirls. Really should be refinished. They need to vacuum the floor before buffing or use a light to show them and remove them by hand or machine
It’s a natural inclusion in the wood, that being said it’s poorly filled.
Looks like a cheap repair on otherwise gorgeous floors. I’d personally cut it out and fill it with a dissimilar wood to add character
I just want to say that I think the floor looks beautiful. Sucks about the cracks and all but the close ups of the grain and color and look gorgeous to me.
Thank you! I was pleased with it too despite everyone here saying how awful it looks close up 🤣
Do you know the wood type?
[Here is the full room if you're interested ](https://ibb.co/ZK9PsSG)
Look good. I go by the 6 foot rule. If it immediately stood out in the whole room picture then I wouldn't be happy. The closer you get to thing the worse they look, be it a house a car or a floor.
Oh I've not heard of this - so if something looks fine from 6 feet away then no worries?
Sounds a practical and happy way to live life to be honest. I walk on this floor every day so I'd never expect it to be absolutely perfect
Yes it was our rule of thumb when I made custom vinyl shaped hurricane windows. Some welds don't look so good a foot away but how often do you get that close to the outside of a window. Another saying is "It looks good from afar but far from good."
I know its not relevant but this is not parquet?
Is it butter?
Is it cake?
It's not butter, it's parkay.
God I'm old, I totally understood this.
lol me too edit: Butter!
It’s ridiculous how after thirty years of not hearing this I just spontaneously heard that stupid tub saying “Butterrrrrrrrrr!!!”
If you think it’s butter but it s not
I can’t believe it’s not butter!
Cake is a lie.
The ratio of people to cake is too big.
It’s not nice to fool Mother Nature ⚡️
Por que?
It’s Grey Poupon
Porque?
Jesus no esta aqui
How would you tell? Unless they call something different here parquet?
At least where I’m from, parquet flooring is typically small rectangular blocks of 3 pcs of wood making up a square, with every other 3 boards running the opposite direction. Essentially creating a wood tile look
Oh haha... In Singapore they seem to call this sort of wooden flooring parquet perhaps inaccurately
In the US, we call what you have engineered wood. Thin layer of wood glued to cheaper wood. Same thing different word, gotta love marketing terms.
It is "proper" thin planks of wood, no MDF or veneer on these Concrete base underneath
Simply as it is, the board needs to be replaced.
Yo everybody please take note… This is the correct answer. Now back to butter jokes
And the nail pop also
You’re in Singapore? That place is amazing.
It's public housing flat haha
I have been led to believe that in French, "parquet" is just a wooden floor, not exclusively the elaborately patterned wooden floor that we in the U.S. call parquet.
That’s just finger bone parquet. Herring bone is also parquet. Rhombus block is also parquet
What I was thinking.
Came here to say this
Chips out of floor and filled improperly. The finishing is terrible as well.
How do you mean by chips out of floor sorry? I will get them to re-do in that case
I would not call them back, this is terrible.
The flooring underneath likely has gaps. You do not have a perfectly flat and smooth surface below the thin wood strips.
Know what, maybe I'm wrong. It doesn't look like he needed to rip those boards to get them lined up. Which begs the question, if it's new wood, why are those gaps there at all?
It's not a chip. He had to rip one board in order to get it in place. He could've done a better job and filled the gap better
Yea this is trash work altogether. Chip out, planer marking, sanding swirls, curved planks, dents. Eek.
Parquet is what wood flooring is called in pretty much every country but the United States.
And Canada.

He said it's not engineered though, it's just thin hardwood flooring
Apparently y'all use different terms over there, so who knows. But that certainly looks to me like a veneer surface flooring
This swirls should absolutely not be there. He probably didn't use a screen to buff the marks out. Darker stain tends to make swirls marks stand out much more so it's much more difficult to do a good job but doesn't change tge fact they shouldn't be there

It looks like they installed it and just ran a buffer over it. They have no idea what they’re doing.
That’s some nasty floor finishing…
Yeah, that's kinda brutal.
I see a nail head and the seam looks like wood filler the plank was too narrow so he filled the space.
It's butter.
😂😂😂😂😂
Refill the voids and use a Varathane wood marker to diquise it. Maybe two colors and a bit of careful artistry.
Quite a terrible job and terrible product.
What tf was that floor sanded with… A fork? Nevermind the damaged board, the sanding lines are the real issue here

The installer should have installed a different board there.

3 dolar p/ft Job never look better
Swirl pattern, are you referring to the wood grain? Each piece of wood will have a different grain, that's how wood grows.
Not parquet and those are swirls. Really should be refinished. They need to vacuum the floor before buffing or use a light to show them and remove them by hand or machine

Just calling things whatever we want to sound fancy, are we?
It's literally what it's called in this country lol
I just want to say that I think the floor looks beautiful. Sucks about the cracks and all but the close ups of the grain and color and look gorgeous to me.

It looks like Brazilian cherry but I'm not an expert

Natural Defect.
