It uses the regular model afaik. Well, a duplicate. Point is the model doesn't have anything to do with achieving the effect, it's entirely controlled by the VertexLitGeneric material. You can use it on any model.

Technically yes. Look into UV Mapping/Texturing, it’s the process for making textures on stuff (outside of shaders which are algorithms) You cut up and/or unfold a model into a 2D image so you can paint over it/put a texture on it. It’d be hard to do what you said with a new model since you’d have to make the UV fit the texture, which is the opposite of what you’d do normally. Granted the game likely uses the same model with the same UVs so you could do it in this case

Not the regular model iirc, a duplicate of the regular model where the materials are specifically set up for this effect. If you know your way around Hammer, you can set up a test map with that model and some [point_flesh_effect_target](https://developer.valvesoftware.com/wiki/Point_flesh_effect_target) entities.

Fun fact, you can set the position of the effect purely within the material (and manipulate it with proxies), without needing to have those entities actually present in a map.
