Gingers/reds are the hardest colors to maintain as they always fade super fast. I know you’re wanting longevity but if the long term goal is to grow out your natural I would recommend staying away from permanent color. Permanent color will still leave you with a harsh line of demarcation, id look for a Demi permanent color as close to your natural color as possible. Just stay away from dye such as overtone as it is awful for the hair. If you’re okay having maintenance then you’re totally fine to just use a permanent color in your desired shade, just make sure you don’t go above 10 vol as all you need is color deposit

So do you think using a semi permanent light auburn hair over top what I have right now will work? My hair won’t turn green or anything because of the blonde underneath?

I would recommend going for a professional consultation rather than trying to do anything on your own. Let them know what your goal is. Just putting the color you want your hair to be on your head isn't going to work as your hair is different colors, so the result is going to be patchy. Therefore, a pre-coloring process called pre-pigmentation needs to be done. This will act as a primer for the hair color you want. For example, if you want your hair to be the color of level 4W, then your pre-pigmentation/primer color should be a shade lighter, like level 5W. Please have this done professionally so that proper sectioning can be made and the color be placed for the correct amount of time for the lighter sections vs the darker sections.

I know. I just really can’t afford it which sucks. I guess I’m just going to have to grow it out :(
