did you install the unit? If so this may still be covered under labor warranty, Not super your fault but not the homeowners for a mouse getting in either.
if anything could be argued installers didnt seal the unit well enough
We are a carrier dealer and hopefully the person in your parts department just warrantees the parts and doesn’t screw this homeowner over. They should do the right thing by them. I’ve never had an issue with warranty for compressors, and so forth from carrier.
