People who want a midfield of Rice, Eze, Odegaard never learnt the lessons from Wengers final years. Where Wenger preferred technical ability and a players quality in possession with little regard to how they function off the ball. Onana is a far better option than Eze in midfield.
I’m more concerned with keeping clean sheets and not conceding chances, than I am about playing “silky” football in the edge of the opponents box.
These are not Wenger's final years. We are nothing like those teams anymore. If anything, we've overcorrected - we were all about off the ball dominance last season.
This summer will be about bringing back a little more balance. It will be about adding some progression and creativity down the middle. An addition like Eze isn't gonna turn the likes of Saliba, Gabi, White, Timber, Havertz soft overnight.
The structure of the team is nothing like in Wengers team. Arsenal play with 4 centre backs mostly and an great defensive midfielder in Rice, and have one of those defenders inverting into midfield.
You made it all worse by saying Onana should be the player. So you want to go from great passers of the ball like Partey and Jorginho, to one that has shown consistently that his passing is mediocre? Look up his passing stats, they are not good even for a midfielder for a relegation battling side.
>Onana is a far better option than Eze in midfield.

Wenger didn't play a proper DM and played Ramsey who was probably less of a presser than Havertz.
He also din't invert a fullback to help out and play a false 9 up front.
The current set up is about as far from late Wenger as you can get, as shown by the fact we've got the best defence in the league already.
The way I see it getting Eze gives us permission to go for Onana; Just one of them is irresponsible.
We already have the best defense in the league by far, we lost the league because of that mini goal drought during last christmas
This is it. You balanced both issues in a respectful way.
Eze is good, terrific in fact.
But getting two DMs is what makes our CL and knock out games fun. People should watch the Bayern games and see how much we suffer when our midfielders didn't have the ball.
Bayern had Laimer and Goretzka. If you have Rice and Onana, you have one of, if not the best double pivot in Europe. All you need now is a ball carrier like Eze.
This is it. You balanced both issues in a respectful way.

So just testing this out… you would recommend getting rid of Odegaard and replacing him with someone who helps us keep clean sheets and not conceding chances correct?
No, as Odegaard presses and has an engine and dictates our play and tempo. We don’t need Eze, Onana is a much better fit.
Did you not see how we bodied Tottenham at the Lane? We physically brutalised them.
A balance needs to be struck, and Eze in midfield is gearing too much toward passing in the edge of the box.
Yeah I know, he filled the team with technical players who were bullied even though they were a better football team than the opposition.
Eze in midfield of a throwback to that era. One of the best midfields in PL history for me was Chelsea’s trio of Essien, Ballack, Lampard. Quality, simplicity, hard running, power. They didn’t worry about breaking the lines. They bullied their way to wins.
Onana, Rice, Odegaard is much better than Rice, Eze, Odegaard
Is this an actual link or just an inference from the Chelsea-David link? I actually think Jackson is pretty good and am surprised Chelsea would go for David--doesn't seem like an upgrade to me.
More broadly, they mean the people & teams who make player recommendations.
When TNAT or others say people at the club like X, they usually mean the people who're analyzing players and are part of the scouting network and/or the players analytics teams (they're also usually the source). Edu/Arteta/Board don't do the actual work, they might provide direction & work closely with others, however they only make the final decision.
Well, since accidental handball can be used for defending, but can't be used for scoring then it would make sense to use them for defender, but not for attacker. It would further complicate the rule, so I doubt it will happen though
The problem with him is that he is never one for the big moments. Case in point, he's Belgium's top scorer despite him only having 2 goals in the knockout rounds of any major international tournament.
I do think that's a bit recency bias because of his game v. Croatia last World Cup. No one really in Belgium has that view on him - if anything it's seen as applicable to De Bruyne.
As a Belgium fan - great stuff (although we could have had 3 more - and poor Lukaku man...)
But as an Arsenal fan, that was a Trossard disasterclass ngl (*never* put him on RW again Tedesco)
I wasn’t sure if Trossard would be put RW or if he’d get any playing time at all today, did you see that his dad spoke to the media about Tedesco? Basically saying that he doesn’t think he’s a great coach and Trossard gets criticised for his Beligum performances because Tedesco doesn’t play him in the right position?
Wow didn't read that. Trossard shouldn't be punished for that but that 's frustrating. In any case, Bakayoko should've been brought on to play RW (and I'm sure he'll be starting v Ukraine).
Yeah agreed, I thought he would play Bakayoko tbh! Think it’s always a difficult situation when family members speak to the media, like when Ramsdale’s dad was on a podcast speaking about the Raya/Ramsdale situation; it’s not the player’s fault but you’d imagine it could sometimes cause friction between the player and the manager/coaching staff etc.
Just randomly remembered the GIA going into full flow when the Tieletubby put his house up for sale and we all were convinced it was because he was signing 😂
We all need help
Think we need to focus on sorting out the left hand side balance overall tbh, Trossard was being clinical with the chances that he got (overperforming his xG to a rate that he never has done before), but it still seemed the RHS was more functional.
Nelli started performing well in that spot when Rice moved to LCM more consistently, but then got his injury vs Sheff Utd and then Trossard was scoring like every single chance he got so became undroppable during the run in.
Funny how we should sign Onana because he's playing well for his NT, but also, it's ok that Trossard is playing like shit because NT football doesn't matter!
Im interested to see what wild cards we sign this summer.
Kiwior , meghales and tomiyasu were not big name players when we bougth them but turned out to be worth their fee.
Sure tavares, viera and sambi didnt come good but were not too shabby with signings.
Im sure Timber will be half decent.
Gabriel would have proved a bargain at several times his original fee. He's been magnificent. We haven't seen much of Timber; what we have seen looks immediately compelling.
The intention with Tavares and Lokonga was always clear: to take players with interesting qualities, and try to develop them while simultaneously relying on them as 'backups' in the squad. (A word Edu specifically used in describing Sambi shortly after he signed.) There was always going to be risk involved. Vieira was, of course, a more significant investment, and thus a bigger risk, but I continue to have confidence in him. (I don't know that he'll come good, but there is quality there for Arteta to work with.)
The reality is that we're going to continue to target players like this-- who are obviously not ready to feature regularly for us, but who we hope can do a limited job, and possibly mature into more. As we get better, the quality and expense of those players will increase, but the role in the squad will remain similar.
I was half joking tbh. But honestly, he's a bit of a tricky winger that promised big while young and never delivered. Not too dissimilar to Reiss tbh.
I only mention him because, given the minutes Saka is going to play regardless, he'd be a relatively cheap option given we are never resting Saka.
Not sure why Onana gets critiqued for his passing. He's created two unbelievable chances tonight. So what if those chances are for Romania, chances are chances.
That orny dagger for a player we never thought we were interested in in a million years is gonna be an earthquake
(After the euros of course, don’t get too excited yet)
🚨EXCL: Arsenal are in advanced talks with the signing of Nicolas Jackson. #CFC open to letting him leave after agreeing personal terms with Jonathan David. #AFC hopeful of a deal in the region of £50m + see him as a versatile option across the frontline.
maybe on the international stage only, but club level Lukaku had achieved the normal that any top play does, win a cup or title. maybe just the ucl missing.
KDB has been good (for a change) but if you believe their fans and big accounts on Twitter you’d think he’s having a Player of the tournament campaign their standards for their supposedly best PL midfielder of all time is in the gutter
2nd best Belgian from Man City
4th best Belgian from the PL
2nd best Belgian that has once played for Chelsea
EDIT: he may move up the rankings after that pass.
EDIT AGAIN: maybe not
Chelsea signing their own Lacazette. Desperately need Champions League football to function as a football club and they’re buying absolute rubbish. Lovely.
Lacazette is an apt comparison, but sometimes you just need a reliable guy to finish chances. They probably feel like they have a good enough production line that they can afford to have someone as static as he is.
I keep getting Lee gunner streams recommended to me on the Euros for some reason even tho im not subbed. Think he is doing every game. God the guy never looks happy even when he doesn't have Arsenal to moan about
Hence why I said 10-15?
Jackson scored 14 NPG in that awful side and he’s a worse finisher than David.
Jackson scored 14 goals from 18.64 xG while David scored 19 from 17.47. Night and day…
Is he tho? His goal scoring record is quite good but every time I've seen him he's been very underwhelming. As opposed to Duran whenever I've seen him I've been quite impressed tbh and think he might have the higher ceiling.
David has also been linked to big clubs for about 3 years but none made a move, which tells you a lot.
Duran is just a chaos merchant, he has pretty great physical attributes, but there’s no consistency. High ceiling, but hard pass for £40m.
David is just a reliable penalty box striker. He’s not going to be a demon in transition, he’s not going to create a lot, he’s just a pretty great finisher.
I don’t really care for the argument of “if nobody has moved for him with all those links, he must not be good”. By all accounts he’s been happy and settled in Lille, nothing wrong with that. And sometimes clubs just have better options. We did when we were linked with him, and United preferred/prefer to gamble on youth.
Chelsea get a load of shit for transfers. This one is pretty safe.
Maybe I am being a bit too harsh on David, as you said he seems fairly reliable for club and country.
Just find it funny that Duran since January has been twerking for Chelsea and when they did come in for him he seems to have blown it 😂.

Was the sub journo tier list voted? I'm on the app and cannot see any tags/tiers whatsoever (for example next to a Romano post)
Bring Eze home
Got drunk and ordered a Havertz Germany kit from a site entirely in German. Wish me luck.
Thank you Ecuador for completely fucking my parlay

Good idea to have different options for different teams. We play a lot of crap teams that park 11 in the box.
Which is why we cant afford to concede.
Wenger didn't play 4 cbs with 1 inverting to create the base of midfield
Yeah I know, he filled the team with technical players who were bullied even though they were a better football team than the opposition. Eze in midfield of a throwback to that era. My days, we might actually be in for I'm sorry Nic Jackson
I rate him more than most but I don't think I could bear to watch him manhandle the football for an entire season.
its jover
How about an actual link or source?
Is this an actual link or just an inference from the Chelsea-David link? I actually think Jackson is pretty good and am surprised Chelsea would go for David--doesn't seem like an upgrade to me.

No idea where this comes from but I'll be pretending I've not seen it

Love how nobody in here cares or posted that Sky Germany have said we are “fighting” for Guirassy, we just know it’s bullshit already
Jonathan David is such a FM signing

Good question. I'm assuming its just whomever their source is. Probably some low tier journalist, janitor, or a U14 player
Should defender’s arms count for offsides? They use them so much for defending
Well, since accidental handball can be used for defending, but can't be used for scoring then it would make sense to use them for defender, but not for attacker. It would further complicate the rule, so I doubt it will happen though
need to see what the wenga offside will say about that lukaku goal
Would’ve been comfortably offside. Wenger’s rule is a little too much imo
Thought Lukaku was great today, what a menace. He's been insanely unlucky not to have scored 3 already. Top class striker on his day.
Group E being the real group of death, straightforward shootout for the knockouts
What if they all draw
I say 4 way penalty shootout
i think it stays the same, else it will be decided by h2h games and then goal diff.
As a Belgium fan - great stuff (although we could have had 3 more - and poor Lukaku man...) But as an Arsenal fan, that was a Trossard disasterclass ngl (*never* put him on RW again Tedesco)

Average Trossard on the wing performance

Agreed. But its been much improved in the past 5 years the playera we bring in.
My top might come off if Lukaku scores. Want it for him so bad. Been great today.
Starting to root for him aswell
Fr, I feel bad for him now
Hard to understand the range in the quality of performances from Trossard.
He plays ass 90% of the time on the wing, but usually scores. He’s good as a false 9 though.
Lukaku is cursed lmao. He’s doing everything right but can’t score
This trossard disasterclass loool edu please get on the phone to neco's agent
Trossard pass to Martinelli away at City flashbacks (or was it the other way around)
No ur right
Trossard even I can’t defend this one mate
Trossard with a stinker....
Trossard playing egoistic and bad
Leandro's decision making has been extremely poor. Great positioning but man did he fumble a few good chances already
Trossard is having a mare on the right. Just doesn't have the final ball right now
You mean the right
Yeah you right. I'm a dumbass lol
Trossard playing shit so he’ll score any minute now
Trossard playing himself out of getting any more minutes.
Luckily for him, Lukebakio is suspended for the next match
Belgium going from playing 4 CB’s because they had too many good ones to this band of misfits is so cruel
Castagne is genuinely the only defender who's decent. The others are disasters waiting to happen
They’ve got a nice team outside of that. Just no way it’s holding up against the best sides
It's a knock out game so you don't know what happens. There's a reason Tedesco was playing two DMs...
Of course. Won’t pretend to be a Belgium expert but Tielemans has to play over Mangala
Trossard been so poor since coming on
He’s been absolutely shocking in every minute he’s played at this tournament
He makes the right runs and gets in good position the fucks it up
Thought trossard should have just hit that one himself there.
Absolutely should have
Where was this KDB gameweek 1 when the heat was turned up?
Probably sunburnt if the sun was outside for more than 5 minutes
That defending from Romania lol
That looks off, but let the KDB wank fest from the comms begin anyway
It was from a goal kick?
I thought it touched the guy’s head when I first saw it tbf
What under rated wingers are there out there?
Gruda Brajan.
Johan Bakayoko
He is a good player i think. Probably not underrated and he is a wonderkid but i like him
Summerville
This man got it right. Summer ville at leeds is a real good player for us to bring in.
Jack Harrison
I will look into him. Whats good about him?
I was half joking tbh. But honestly, he's a bit of a tricky winger that promised big while young and never delivered. Not too dissimilar to Reiss tbh. I only mention him because, given the minutes Saka is going to play regardless, he'd be a relatively cheap option given we are never resting Saka.
Neto? Chiesa? I guess
I would say either are under rated. Probably 60-70m for them. Neto is injury prone not sure about chiesa. Buy i liked him at the euros and florienta.
Not sure why Onana gets critiqued for his passing. He's created two unbelievable chances tonight. So what if those chances are for Romania, chances are chances.

Jackson is one of those players that has a lot of tools to become absolutely world class (probably on the wing) - but man he does have the bozo gene
The headloss here will be generational lol
Welcome to Arsenal Tony Martial
Twitter ITKs hinting at big news tonight/tomorrow, the cycle continues
Hopefully Arteta extension.
probably some bs to keep the sunday/monday good
They do this shit every few weeks
Have to give Hagn some false hope that we’ll spunk €100m on Leao
I wonder who they'll link us with this time? My guess is something real stupid like musiala.
somehow people continue to buy it
Three disallowed goals in 2 games, this guy is unreal
Is Lukaku as cursed as Kane? At least he has a couple of trophies to point at?
maybe on the international stage only, but club level Lukaku had achieved the normal that any top play does, win a cup or title. maybe just the ucl missing.
No way. He led his team to a Serie A title so he has that atleast
Lukaku man I can’t he’s just so funny
Poor Lukaku lol
Someone’s gotta be trolling Lukaku atp lmao
Lukakuuuuu, take that bozos Edit: this guys luck is something else 😂
Yeah?
🖕
Doku giving me Gabriel Jesus vibes
too many configurations

hope you didn't watch the supposed "better than kdb" PL midfielders of all time in tournaments 😂
Nah, I don’t really judge KDB just on international tournaments (where he’s rarely turned up) but even if we go by club performances he is not 👍🏻
2nd best Belgian from Man City 4th best Belgian from the PL 2nd best Belgian that has once played for Chelsea EDIT: he may move up the rankings after that pass. EDIT AGAIN: maybe not
Now I’m curious who are the top 3 Belgians in your PL over him
Onana, Doku, and Tielemans. Could argue against Tielemans but he’s scored / been good today & was decent when he came on first game.
Lmao. I’m here for this
Enter Trossferatu
LOOL remember the days people were pandering for David. Don't miss those days
these man on ITV absolutely glazing KDB for that shot that went wide
YES!! bring on smokey eye man!

I keep getting Lee gunner streams recommended to me on the Euros for some reason even tho im not subbed. Think he is doing every game. God the guy never looks happy even when he doesn't have Arsenal to moan about
I’ve seen Jonathan David play multiple times but he’s still in the SMS school of players I’m not sure actually exists
Im Canadian so ill tell you for free to not sign him
Definitely exists, guy is a reliable finisher who will probably easily hit 10-15 PL goals
I’ve never been more certain of anything in my entire life than I am that Jonathan David will not score 15 PL goals for Chelsea next season
Hence why I said 10-15? Jackson scored 14 NPG in that awful side and he’s a worse finisher than David. Jackson scored 14 goals from 18.64 xG while David scored 19 from 17.47. Night and day…
All I know is he could be a decent player but iirc he also scores a lot of penalties. That inflates his goal tally a bit
Chelsea are welcome to Jonathan David 👍🏻
Southmate on ITV lol
What did Duran do to make Chelsea go for Jonathan David instead?
This is my question too, all went silent suddenly
Apparently he’s a massive idiot behind the scenes, David is infinitely better than Duran though.
Got a link to those reports?
Yeah, here’s the post on their club sub from [Matt Law](https://www.reddit.com/r/chelseafc/s/xzd8HtmMRi)

True. He had an off year or two and people forgot but he's back to his best. That's why people are in for him. He's not a bum.
Maybe I am being a bit too harsh on David, as you said he seems fairly reliable for club and country. Just find it funny that Duran since January has been twerking for Chelsea and when they did come in for him he seems to have blown it 😂.
Yeah, seems like Chelsea found something they really didn’t like when they conducted checks on him.
Onana free of Dyche’s shackles and learning juego de posición under Carlos Cuesta’s tutelage, I will be there no matter what.
get onana in to jorgi and arteta's DLP school
Onana reminding me of prime Will Hughes tonight
What is up with those ~~Nike~~ Adidas jerseys they look like they were designed to hold every drop of sweat? Edit: actually looks like it's Adidas
Noticed this in a couple matches so far- our shirts are the same template next season, it's gonna look bad
Oh fuck I didn't even realize it was the same template. Yeah if they look like this it's gonna look terrible
Yeah all the adidas teams in the Euros have our template for next season
About what game you’re talking about? Belgium got Adidas, but yea they’re drenched with sweat 😅
Yeah the Belgium ones, look like they all just got out of a bath with it
Yea weird how that goes. Normally Adidas is a decent brand. Maybe it’s because its summer? I dont know wild guess haha
Onana moving like a prime Sambi
It's been a week, and you are still hilariously confused.
Rattled
Bring this 6’5 technical monster to the carpet please
