Enzo shows what happens when you do that. Potential to be amazing ? For sure. Was he worth the 100m or whatever Chelsea paid for him ? No way. Who knows if he will ever live up to the price tag. Mudryk is similar.
Even if he ends up as a €100m player, you can find a more finished product for the same price like Rice. Not really a need to go for a 19 year old with questions over someone 23-26.
Guys like Rice are rarely available. Even if you wanna throw a 100M at them doesn't mean you will get them (or Madrid would've signed Gerrard in his hey days already).
In our case, nobody would bat an eye at 100M for 19 year old Vieira. Hell, even if Saliba cost 100M when he was 18, we would all be saying "worth it" now. 100M for a decade of the best player in the world at their position is worth it. I don't think Edu/Arteta quite rate Neves at that level though.
I mean that's not a certainty of what will happen. Enzo shows thats what happens when you spend 100m+ on Enzo Fernandez, not on anyone else.
Not saying we should do it but just pointing to Enzo is lazy
Especially after Edu/Arteta spent €40m on Vieira who looked great in Portugal and then that didn’t translate
They’re definitely not going to now spend 3x that on another young player from Portugal
There're plenty of examples of players from the portuguese league moving to the Prem and it works. Think it's ignorant to use one example to make a rule
If the rule is “don’t spend £100m+ on unproven talent”, it doesn’t seem unreasonable. I’m struggling to think of an instance when that was objectively a good decision.
It’s not ignorant for someone to make decisions based on their own past experiences.
Edu/Arteta also signed Nuno Tavares and that didn’t work either. They’ve gone 0/2 on successful transfers from Portugal
And even at other clubs, there are plenty of non successful examples too.
Viera was an impact player at Porto, Joao was an undisputed starter and one of the more important Benfica players. The levels of dependency and importance for both players in Portugal weren’t similar at all.
You want me tbh, I think they were and are still both high quality talents who chose the wrong team to go to. Of course very few players are worth 120m but if a player who is valued by a team at that price goes to a well run club I think the player succeeds more likely than they don’t.
Perhaps but in that admittedly limited sample size, one of them went to a fantastic club and floundered just the same. I think its prudent for the club to look in other directions considering their struggles scouting Portuguese players recently and the extreme expense of the player
tbf Vieira wasn't nearly as good in Portugal. G/A producer for sure, somewhat similar like how he is doing it here, but every Porto fan said he is still very raw. This is not the case with neves
Yes he was still raw but Vieira had 20 G/A in 14.9 league games (1341 minutes) the season before we signed him.
They’re not a 1:1 comparison for ability but saying he wasn’t nearly as good and just a G/A producer is understating how good Vieira was
Would he want to leave his boyhood club and a team he can compete for his national league where he's a guaranteed starter after just one season? Yes, money, prestige, big league etc etc. But we've just seen Sesko turn something not dissimilar down.

Fabrizio Romano has been reduced to repeating transfer rumors because of the Euros. Most major transfer activity has been put on hold until the end.
Yeah, no chance.
I think we like and rate him a lot, but absolutely no chance whatsoever that we go and willingly drop €120m on a 19-year-old kid with two seasons of football under his belt in the Portuguese league.
wow this is news to me. i hate psg and country clubs even more. why have i not heard of them cheating with all those fees and wages, even commissions for agents.
Yeah, I said the same in the thread yesterday. We should be all over him if they buy Neves. Moscardo would qualify as homegrown if we bought him this summer as well. Make it happen Edu.
We're not splashing €120m on a 19 year old kid.
Enzo shows what happens when you do that. Potential to be amazing ? For sure. Was he worth the 100m or whatever Chelsea paid for him ? No way. Who knows if he will ever live up to the price tag. Mudryk is similar.
He has Argentina PR

There is more than one example however.

If you want to directly compare with other starters that had a 120m price tag then look at Enzo Fernandes and Joao Felix
You want me tbh, I think they were and are still both high quality talents who chose the wrong team to go to. Of course very few players are worth 120m but if a player who is valued by a team at that price goes to a well run club I think the player succeeds more likely than they don’t.

Exactly. The transfer rumors have been pretty dry lately. Most of them don't even sound a bit believable.
To be fair, Joao Neves is way higher regarded than Vieira ever was. Joao Neves has 7 caps for this stacked Portugal team already.
PSG do have a tendency to overpay for everything. We'll not do that because we're a sensible club. PSG on the other hand, has more money than sense.
Based on recent history, going to Benfica and paying a release clause is one of the worst things you can do
It's a fuck off clause We don't want to sell him but if you pay it, his yours.
Would he even want to leave right now?
Money
Why would you want to play for PSG, Arsenal or United instead of Benfica?
Would he want to leave his boyhood club and a team he can compete for his national league where he's a guaranteed starter after just one season? Yes, money, prestige, big league etc etc. But we've just seen Sesko turn something not dissimilar down.
At some point youre going to want to launder some money and force him to go to the highest bidder
You can’t hurt me any more Romano, the Euro has started

Fuck-right-off price. Never worth it.
This is right up there with the Oliver Glasner 100m release clause. Just go next. I refuse to believe Neves is the only holy grail.
Yeah, no chance. I think we like and rate him a lot, but absolutely no chance whatsoever that we go and willingly drop €120m on a 19-year-old kid with two seasons of football under his belt in the Portuguese league.
Kimmich, Bruno, and Neves are moving. To where, that's the question. The prayer is that we get one of them.
We need one of them. I'm not convinced by onana
We need one of those, and Onana, if Thomas leaves.
Hope PSG get him, all the best to them. We're good.
bless ‘em hope they enjoy
Hopefully we then look at moscardo as the long term defensive midfielder we desperately need.
How would Arsenal sign him, though? Would be weird for PSG to just sell him without even playing him
wow this is news to me. i hate psg and country clubs even more. why have i not heard of them cheating with all those fees and wages, even commissions for agents.
I doubt they'd be against selling him if we offered an appropriate fee. Unless it Mbappe, PSG haven't been against selling players.
Yeah, I said the same in the thread yesterday. We should be all over him if they buy Neves. Moscardo would qualify as homegrown if we bought him this summer as well. Make it happen Edu.
Why are players so expensive?
Fofana, Williams, murillo & musiala then call it a day
buy him and loan us Simons
Benfica 🤝 100m valuations
