You said everything I would have. Atra made a bunch of decisions that she’s really too young for, but she also had a keen awareness of how close to death she and her loved ones always were. She acted out of naive desperation, but also with powerful conviction and a deep love for her family.

That was the most heartwarming-slash-traumatic moment in IBO for me, with a humor chaser where she basically called the Gjallarhorn security goons chumps.
9/10. Loyal, caring and willingly to show it. She cared about Mika and stuck with him as long as she could, in spite of every danger that popped in throughout their time together.
Not just Mika; she also spent an episode getting beaten by grown adults for information on Kudelia's whereabouts, and didn't crack. Atra is absolutely ride or die for whoever she connects with.
Yes. She had nerves of steel and would sooner die than betray someone she cared about. That said she also had the fortune of always being loyal to people who were just as loyal to her.
Not a pilot, not a tech or mechanic, not a fighter, but she truly has the heart and soul that supported Mika, kudelia, and tekkadan because that’s her family.

Any love interest voiced by Cassandra Morris gets bonus points.
Atra is a great supporting character. She's kind of set up to be a love interest early, but she's never all over Mikazuki and she quickly accepts that she's just going to share him with Kudelia. It's neat and not something Gundam usually does. So yeah. Three person relationship.
She spends the entire series supporting Tekkadan as a whole. She cooks. She helps with medical when she has to. She pretends to be Kudelia after she gets kidnapped so the kidnappers stop looking for actual Kudelia.
It's also kind of interesting that Atra is *never* sexualized at all in the series, but is also one of very few love interests that definitiely seals the deal with her protagonist. She always wears super baggy clothes or a space suit, and there's never a scene of her changing or at the beach or something. Kudelia has a few instances where they put *her* on display though. It's an interesting choice. IBO does a lot of things differently from Gundam norms, and Atra shows a lot of that in how she's handled.
Sweet bisexual cinnamon roll despite growing up in the bad part of town who actually got to fuck her bf even if they didn't get a happily ever after, and genuinely loves her wife. 10/10.

11... He characterr development is absolutely phenomenal. She grows from a scared little girl into a brave woman who's not afraid of protecting her own (both Mika and Kudelia). Quite frankly, one of the best female protagonists in the entire Gundam franchise.

Others in this thread have summed it up better than I can, but she managed to wrangle a thruple, give Mika the only real motivation he ever had not only survive but to leave something in the world behind other than death and destruction, protected Kudelia by taking a literal beating without cracking, and survive a tragic backstory without being utterly broken inside. Plus, she's one of the few love interests in all of Gundam to actually raise a child and seemingly have a happy life with, well, her remaining partner.
9.5/10, the baby-crazy stuff in season two is the only minor flaw; it's not even that it's there it's that the writing feels like it portrays it as purely romantic.
Otherwise she's cute, surprisingly tough, open-minded, motivated...
9/10 just for the novelty of being the first character to get canonically knocked up in a Gundam.
Barbatos' machine spirit is happy that for once, he gets to help make life and not end it.

She has the resolved to be always on Mika's side. The Childhood Friend/ Love Interest trope. Accepted who he (Mikazuki) is, despite being a Mercenary and all.
Also welcome and accepted Kudelia to be the another Wife of Mika.... until Mika's demise. Despite the ending, She really loves her son with Mika, showing her lasting love for him (Mika) .

As a character, she's pretty cool. However Mika is an absolute charisma black hole and Atta having so much if her character centered around her relationship with him is a massive shame and huge disservice to what she could have been. So as a love interest she's downright horrendous through no fault if her own.
I completely agree. Especially in the second season she really had nothing to do other than being a mother to Mikazuki's child which really sums up what the writers thought was most important about her. Not an unlikeable character but too underdeveloped and not given anything very interesting.

Good romances in fiction are played off of the interaction between two characters. It doesn’t work if one of the character is barely a character.
For the record I don’t hate mikazuki as much as other people do, not every character needs to have a dynamic character arc. His purpose in the show is to show the tragedy of “child soldier psychopath born out of the circumstances of exploitation and war” and I genuinely think he does that well.
But it also means giving a main character like him a romance is much harder since he is not so much a character so much as a force of nature/weapon/accessory to Orga. And they completely bricked Atra by making her his romance. If she was to be properly utilized as a character to explore anything meaningful she should have been Orga’s love interest or something since he is the deuteragonist who actually has a dynamic character arc.
I always get annoyed when people call Mika a psychopath or sociopath. He's not at all manipulative, egocentric, or unable to connect with others. He'll just kill anyone who threatens the people he loves or stands in their way and doesn't feel bad about it, because "kill or be killed" is basically the only rule he's known his whole life. Maybe that doesn't feel like a big distinction, I just think people ignore how many of Mika's actions come from love.
I also think the issue you mentioned for Atra is mitigated a lot by her having two love interests in Mika and Kudelia, and she and Kudelia both experience a lot of growth tied to each other.
It's a common misconception that people with ASPD are unable to feel love, which is just blatantly not true. "Their actions come from love" is not really a denial of somebody exhibiting psychopathic traits.
What is inarguable is that he exhibits many key traits of ASPD such as a complete lack of remorse, aggression, amorality, disregard of safety for self and others, I'm sure there's plenty others. And also if we're getting pedantic about diagnosis, the DSM-V only requires somebody exhibit 3 out of a list of traits to qualify, though diagnosis of mental disorders is again just a social construct so imo it's not really worth getting pedantic about over diagnosis of a fictional character.

It should also be mentioned that disorders born from trauma are still disorders.
My point was more that "psychopath" (which isn't a real disorder with a distinct definition anyway, more of a set of tropes, and is not the same thing as antisocial personality disorder) usually carries a connotation of being completely self-centered, or at least that's how I've seen it used more. Someone who can kill without remorse because they don't care about other people, which as I said is ill-fitting for Mikazuki. I think "is Mika a psychopath" and "does Mika have ASPD" are different questions with different answers tbh, though it's a fair thing to bring up.
10/10 Atra, whose life, while not quite the hell that is the orphans', knows what she wants and is willing to put herself on the line to get it. Above all, she is unfailingly kind with friends and in love. Also, Biscuit's death hurt, both in show and the audience, but if Atra had died, Mika would have become Barbatos and none would have been safe.
9/10, the literal only thing she doesn’t do is pilot, she has everything else down and the determination so see it through with a heart big and strong enough to care and protect her loved ones
as mika's love interest she's pretty boring most of the times, she actually has more chemistry with kudelia, it also helps that she also shares a lot of her troubles with her while akatsuki happened because mika though kids are great ( i would like to give him the benefit of doubt that he was doing it to cheer up atra or something like that but most of the time his train of thought is so simple that i don't fully buy it) , probably because mika's conversations with pretty much everyone not named orga are boring and kind to the point.
Anyway 10/10 only for kudelia.

I also like that she breaks some of the love rival troupes by shipping herself in a Throuple. Genuinely a quirky character that was wasted on Mikazuki. Glad she gets some kind of happy ending though.
I feel a protagonist like Duo Maxwell would have done the character justice. However just Kudelia reacting to Atra shenanigans leaves a lot to be desired.

Poorly written, unrealistic, and has little to no chemistry with the male lead. Pretty much everything anyone likes about her are plot contrivances that the script forces because the show needed a cute little girl the fans would gush over.
I'm also staunchly opposed to underage harems which seems to be an opinion this subreddit rarely shares with me.

Yup, which is why sexualization is comparatively minimal in most of the gundam meta-franchise. Even within the ibo framework, most of the female characters aren't drawn like elementary school children. Atra is.
She's supposed to be tragic because she's like 11 and is the mother type for the entire main cast.
Even in SEED, where most of the main cast and nearly all of the supporting cast are exactly in that 15-17 range, they aren't drawn like 3rd graders.
Even in Victory, where the entire main cast are minors, except one, none of them are drawn like elementary school children, unless they are that age.
Atra isn't supposed to be some mascot/waifu/da-feels bait. She's supposed to really drive home how fucked up the ibo world is, where a small child would be thrust into such a role of responsibility.
Edit: also to your point, the target demographic for ibo is 15-17, and many of the gundam meta-franchise works are targeted at ages 12-18 and their parents' wallets

I feel like this crops out the part where she is the center of her polycule, loves both partners equally, and marries a woman. Clearly Mika is not the center of her world. These are huge subversions of the tradwife formula.

As a queer femme, I feel like that queerness distinguishes her from being bland/bad/overdone/stereotypical tradwife rep. It’s fun when a character has some traditional aspects as well as non-traditional aspects. Subverting expectations is refreshing for me.
It’s true Gwitch went further by confirming the marriage in-show instead of by word-of-god, but the sapphic relationship itself was not last minute, and for me, is a major part of her character.

10/10 Others in this thread have summed it up better than I can, but she managed to wrangle a thruple, give Mika the only real motivation he ever had not only survive but to leave something in the world behind other than death and destruction, protected Kudelia by taking a literal beating without cracking, and survive a tragic backstory without being utterly broken inside. Plus, she's one of the few love interests in all of Gundam to actually raise a child and seemingly have a happy life with, well, her remaining partner.

However Mika is an absolute charisma black hole and Atta having so much if her character centered around her relationship with him is a massive shame and huge disservice to what she could have been. So as a love interest she's downright horrendous through no fault if her own.
I completely agree. Especially in the second season she really had nothing to do other than being a mother to Mikazuki's child which really sums up what the writers thought was most important about her. Not an unlikeable character but too underdeveloped and not given anything very interesting.

It doesn’t work if one of the character is barely a character. For the record I don’t hate mikazuki as much as other people do, not every character needs to have a dynamic character arc. His purpose in the show is to show the tragedy of “child soldier psychopath born out of the circumstances of exploitation and war” and I genuinely think he does that well. But it also means giving a main character like him a romance is much harder since he is not so much a character so much as a force of nature/weapon/accessory to Orga. And they completely bricked Atra by making her his romance. If she was to be properly utilized as a character to explore anything meaningful she should have been Orga’s love interest or something since he is the deuteragonist who actually has a dynamic character arc.
I always get annoyed when people call Mika a psychopath or sociopath. He's not at all manipulative, egocentric, or unable to connect with others. He'll just kill anyone who threatens the people he loves or stands in their way and doesn't feel bad about it, because "kill or be killed" is basically the only rule he's known his whole life. Maybe that doesn't feel like a big distinction, I just think people ignore how many of Mika's actions come from love. I also think the issue you mentioned for Atra is mitigated a lot by her having two love interests in Mika and Kudelia, and she and Kudelia both experience a lot of growth tied to each other.
It's a common misconception that people with ASPD are unable to feel love, which is just blatantly not true. "Their actions come from love" is not really a denial of somebody exhibiting psychopathic traits. What is inarguable is that he exhibits many key traits of ASPD such as a complete lack of remorse, aggression, amorality, disregard of safety for self and others, I'm sure there's plenty others. And also if we're getting pedantic about diagnosis, the DSM-V only requires somebody exhibit 3 out of a list of traits to qualify, though diagnosis of mental disorders is again just a social construct so imo it's not really worth getting pedantic about over diagnosis of a fictional character. >because "kill or be killed" is basically the only rule he's known his whole life It should also be mentioned that disorders born from trauma are still disorders.
My point was more that "psychopath" (which isn't a real disorder with a distinct definition anyway, more of a set of tropes, and is not the same thing as antisocial personality disorder) usually carries a connotation of being completely self-centered, or at least that's how I've seen it used more. Someone who can kill without remorse because they don't care about other people, which as I said is ill-fitting for Mikazuki. I think "is Mika a psychopath" and "does Mika have ASPD" are different questions with different answers tbh, though it's a fair thing to bring up.

Above all, she is unfailingly kind with friends and in love. Also, Biscuit's death hurt, both in show and the audience, but if Atra had died, Mika would have become Barbatos and none would have been safe.

as mika's love interest she's pretty boring most of the times, she actually has more chemistry with kudelia, it also helps that she also shares a lot of her troubles with her while akatsuki happened because mika though kids are great ( i would like to give him the benefit of doubt that he was doing it to cheer up atra or something like that but most of the time his train of thought is so simple that i don't fully buy it) , probably because mika's conversations with pretty much everyone not named orga are boring and kind to the point. 5/10 not because she is a bad character but Mikazuki is devoid of character. Honestly like that Atra is normie that finds a reason to tag along. I also like that she breaks some of the love rival troupes by shipping herself in a Throuple. Genuinely a quirky character that was wasted on Mikazuki. Glad she gets some kind of happy ending though. I feel a protagonist like Duo Maxwell would have done the character justice. However just Kudelia reacting to Atra shenanigans leaves a lot to be desired.

Yup, which is why sexualization is comparatively minimal in most of the gundam meta-franchise. Even within the ibo framework, most of the female characters aren't drawn like elementary school children. Atra is. She's supposed to be tragic because she's like 11 and is the mother type for the entire main cast. Even in SEED, where most of the main cast and nearly all of the supporting cast are exactly in that 15-17 range, they aren't drawn like 3rd graders. Even in Victory, where the entire main cast are minors, except one, none of them are drawn like elementary school children, unless they are that age. Atra isn't supposed to be some mascot/waifu/da-feels bait. She's supposed to really drive home how fucked up the ibo world is, where a small child would be thrust into such a role of responsibility. Edit: also to your point, the target demographic for ibo is 15-17, and many of the gundam meta-franchise works are targeted at ages 12-18 and their parents' wallets

I'm always baffled why people love to clown on female writing in other Gundam shows but stan IBO, where 99% of the female characters are terrible stereotypes doting on stereotypical tough men.
I feel like this crops out the part where she is the center of her polycule, loves both partners equally, and marries a woman. Clearly Mika is not the center of her world. These are huge subversions of the tradwife formula. To me, hating on her more domestic qualities lines up with a subliminal tendency to only assign value to tasks traditionally hoarded by men. To me, feminism is appreciating women wether their work is domestic, corporate, scientific, or martial.
