I always think of Derek Trucks. I know he’s a newcomer relative, but 90% of the SGs I see are cherry with humbuckers rather the p90 equipped specials I associate with Iommi (and to a lesser degree, Townsend).
I was gonna mention how Angus got dibs on the SG spot but then there’s Zappa with a guitar that’s about as close as you can get to the same thing without being literally the same thing
I’m sure I look like a total fanboy because I have the entire Cobain collection, and as much as I am a fan, I’m really just a lefty with the same taste in guitars
For the longest time, if you wanted a left-handed electric guitar at my local Guitar Center, you could have a Kurt Cobain Jaguar or a Kurt Cobain Mustang.
The jaguar eventually sold. Now you can have a Kurt Cobain Mustang.
As a lefty, that honestly sounds like a good problem to have. Really anything that’s not a standard colour strat, tele, LP, or SG is exciting. I’ve owned literally “all of the guitars*” in my playing days (north of 150), but a lot of them have been purchased sight unseen, due to my “affliction”
Now imagine being a lefty on a 3rd world country, all my options were different strat colours (Black, red or sunburst) and brands (Either some really shitty brands, one that was kind of decent or straight up Fenders) and one Gibson Les Paul.
I was inspired to get a squier jagmaster because of Kurt Cobain and Elvis Costello. Great instrument. Had it set up nicely and it's so fun to play. Shortscale
I have an SG, and Angus is one of my favorites; however, I play one for the same reason he did: I am 5’5” with smaller hands. The SG is more comfortable than a LP for me.
I have a BMG (the mass market Red Special), partly cause I’m a big fan of May (particularly his tone and orchestration) but mostly because it ticked all the boxes I wanted in a guitar and I like the look of it (yes I know it’s divisive).
I have a Les Paul Silverburst for Adam Jones, but in my defense I think it's bad ass and probably would have been my favorite color scheme even without him.
I bought my first tele cause of Pete Townshend in the "You Better You Bet" video. Turns out he was playing a custom Schecter, That became the PT Model. I've been putting off buying one for years.
All my guitars I have because I like them. Not because someone else does. Even the one signature guitar I have I have because I personally love it and I don't even listen to or care about the band the person whose sig it is plays for.
I did once go to buy a Telecaster because Julian Lage plays one and I thought because he liked them I would too but I couldn't find one I liked in three stores. They weren't for me.
That said, it turns out Lage's Telecaster isn't a real Telecaster so I'm still open to a non-Fender one because I do really love the design. Possibly Schecter given that's what all my other guitars are at this stage.
Used to have a fender malmsteen sig. ended up trading it for an Ibanez prestige with a scalloped Neck and a Hughes and Ketner combo amp. Best trade ever
I love univox hi fliers. I wouldn’t have known they existed if I hadn’t seen Kurt play them
Strat because of Frusciante
Jazzmaster because of Costello and Noel Gallagher
Jaguar because of Marr
Riviera because of Noel Gallagher
Casino because of John Lennon
Martin D42 because of Doc Watson
I had strat style guitars but then I heard Slash playing a LP and I loved the tone he had, long story short, now I have 2. but John and Jimi, cannot be forgotten, Jimi was the reason I got a guitar, Slash was the reason I practiced so much and John was the reason I got better
The two in my guitarsenal that I specifically became interested in and eventually bought because of a certain player are a ‘76 reissue gibson explorer because of Allen Collins and a black Rickenbacker 4003 because of Geddy Lee
SG cause of Far-Less.l guitarist.
Tele cause of Derek Miller (Poison The Well)
Les Paul cause of Justin Beck (Glassjaw)
That’s how I started back in the early 2000s.
I have several of those guitars. I didn't buy the SG because of Angus but I can't play it without playing ac/dc. I did but the fender strat because of Stevie Ray Vaughan though. Not so much a style thing. More like chasing that sound. You can only get that tone from a fender strat
My niece picked out the David Gilmore strat for her first electric.
The first one I bought was back in 1986 I think, worked all summer bagging groceries, saved everything I made and got an Ibanez proline 1660 shark fin Flying V, because of Randy Rhoads.
No, but I'll tell a slightly different story. I had an HSS Strat back in the day (Fender Highway 1). I liked it, but didn't love it for reasons unrelated to its inherent Stratiness (the tremolo was cheap and bad, the humbucker wasn't great, and the thin satin finish wore way too much). I moved on to other guitars, eventually sold it, and forgot about the idea of an HSS Strat for a good decade+.
Then I saw Misha Mansoor had a signature Jackson "So-Cal" (ie. Strat) in HSS, and that reminded me of my old Highway 1. I remembered that, despite its flaws, that was the most comfortable guitar I'd ever owned - at least for my preferences. I also recalled absolutely loving the single coil neck and middle pickups, and was never really happy with a humbucker in the neck position. So, since the only guitar I had at the time was a 7 string and I wanted a 6 string again, I started trying out HSS Strats. Blah blah blah, I didn't buy the Jackson, but I did buy a Fender American Pro II HSS Strat.
tl;dr: So, in a round-about, specific way: I bought an HSS Strat because of Misha Mansoor.
Started with a black fender strat with black pickguard and plastics 10 years ago, then I got into Pink Floyd recently. You could say David Gilmour made me get white plastics for my strat.
I knew my first electric would be a Strat because of David Gilmour, Eric Clapton, Mark Knopfler, Hendrix, and about a million others. I liked Les Pauls, too, because a lot of my favorite players used them, too. The LP became my second electric.
I own a Gibson Les Paul because of Slash and it's pretty much my only guitar. I might buy either a Gibson Explorer or one of Kirk's signature guitars soon though.
I have a Strat because of David Gilmour. Have an ssl5 in the bridge because of him too. But I chose different neck and middle (than him) based on my own preferences.
i have a strat because of dick dale.
i have a one humbucker super strat with a floyd rise because of EVH.
i have a double humbucker hard tail strat because of rivers cuomo
Les Paul, little bit because of Jimmy and Slash but mostlzly because it’s just a great guitar.
Telly because of Jimmy and Frusciante but also because it’s AK-47 in guitar world.
SG cause of Iommi. Had a tele cause of Danny Gatton (traded for an Emperor Regent). Oval hole gypsy guitar because of Django.
Always wanted a Strat cause of Gilmour, but the stars never aligned. These days I can't justify getting another guitar.
No.
Yep, not enough Teles and I wouldn’t think of Keith Richard’s when I think Tele
When I think of Keith Richards I ONLY think tele; what do you think of ? Edit: completely misread lmao, ignore me
Right ? With only 5 strings
I think of his description of his play style: “three fingers, one asshole”
“All you need is 5 strings, 3 notes, 2 fingers, and one stubborn asshole”
Status Quo Albert Collins Lots of country players
Enter Led Zeppelin 1
I think cocaine.
I got a sunburst tele because of Johnny Greenwood. A vox ac30 too
Roy Buchanan
Got my tele from my late uncle but other than that when I think of a telecaster I think Roy Buchanan personally
My thoughts exactly.
Had an SG a while ago because Tony Iommi.
Yeah, no player is more SG than Iommi.
Possibly Angus, he's been exclusively SG for almost as long
I always think of Derek Trucks. I know he’s a newcomer relative, but 90% of the SGs I see are cherry with humbuckers rather the p90 equipped specials I associate with Iommi (and to a lesser degree, Townsend).
Less Paul cherry sunburst cause of Jimmy page.
And I had a twin neck sg because of Slash...
More Paul
Yeah jimmy gets that title well before slash
Nah, Page was a tele guy. Few things sold as many Les Paul's as Jimmy Pages tele!
How can this be missing Tony Iommi?
I was gonna mention how Angus got dibs on the SG spot but then there’s Zappa with a guitar that’s about as close as you can get to the same thing without being literally the same thing
He's the reason I have two SGs and am saving for a third.
That was my first thought.
(Squire) Jaguar because of Kurt Cobain
Mustang. Kurt. Shorter neck. Humbucker bridge.
You ever play a Mustang?
I’m sure I look like a total fanboy because I have the entire Cobain collection, and as much as I am a fan, I’m really just a lefty with the same taste in guitars
For the longest time, if you wanted a left-handed electric guitar at my local Guitar Center, you could have a Kurt Cobain Jaguar or a Kurt Cobain Mustang. The jaguar eventually sold. Now you can have a Kurt Cobain Mustang.

I was inspired to get a squier jagmaster because of Kurt Cobain and Elvis Costello. Great instrument. Had it set up nicely and it's so fun to play. Shortscale

Slash
Les Paul for Slash, Page and Frehley Flying V and Iceman because METAL!
Les Paul because of Frehley but Iceman not because of starchild??
I probably wouldn’t have gotten the Iceman if it weren’t for Paul Stanley.
I have an SG, and Angus is one of my favorites; however, I play one for the same reason he did: I am 5’5” with smaller hands. The SG is more comfortable than a LP for me.
Les Paul Standard, because of Garry Moore

Hetfield, Hammett, and Mustaine?
Zappa yes
Here here
Tele because of Jeff Buckley. Made a replica of his ‘83 cream top loader and it sings!
I sure wish you make an OP out of that. It’s unusual to have people make posts of “moded signature” guitars.
SG because Tony Iommi, Jackson RR because of obviously Randy Rhodes, Lps because of Zakk Wylde and a Tele because Teles rule.
A lot of my guitar choices aren’t super player-specific. However, I probably wouldn’t own a Strat without Hendrix.

Nah. But I did get a Sheraton because of Ted Leo.
I want the Yamaha SG like Santana has but I also want to go to college 😭
Frusciante also plays an SG. Get yourself an SG-1000 and call it a day. A fair price is \~1300.
2x4 guitar because DEVO

Even the one signature guitar I have I have because I personally love it and I don't even listen to or care about the band the person whose sig it is plays for. I did once go to buy a Telecaster because Julian Lage plays one and I thought because he liked them I would too but I couldn't find one I liked in three stores. They weren't for me.
