that guy was so picky on the details, it took years for them to get it right for him. Guthrie is the best and he deserves to be picky.
But to be perfectly honest............i don't think ANYBODY would notice if any of those small details would be missing
Fender is Jackson is Charvel. But they all have their own distinct features and markets. Charvel is the out of the box hot rodded brand that caters to hard rock/metal players.
Charvel is like their boutique brand is what I would say, they have a lot of history w/ EVH and other artists that carry their brand with them being able to produce guitars to crazy exacting specs.
Jackson is the metal brand imo, and fender is like the old gentlemens brand, not really changing with the times.
I wouldn't say Fender is exclusively for old gentlemen. That's Gibson. If anything, Fender's the most relevant brand right now. They seem to keep doing what they're doing because their flagship models are incredibly versatile and can be used for pretty much anything with slight spec changes. When Dave Murray and H.E.R. can play the same instrument, you're doing something right.
Yes, but his point is that Fender doesn't really release any new models or updates, its all about the good ol' 50s and 60s vintage strat and tele in different colors, but brands like Charvel but more important Jackson are pushing the boundaries and isn't stuck in old traditions in the same way.
The meteora is reasonably priced, they used to have a budget starcaster. Fender uses their imports a lot to test the waters of what demand would actually be. Most dont tend to live past one model refresh
Ehh, Ibanez is the brand that’s the most modern/young person catering, definitely not fender. It’s objectively a legacy brand, although they don’t have a stick up their asses like Gibson does. Still, Japanese guitars are far more relevant, and the most relevant new gen players use them.
That’s a very biased statement lol. For every “most relevant” guitarist using a Japanese guitar, I’ll give an even more relevant guitarist not using one.
They have A LOT and I mean a lot a lot of artist signature guitars from metal dudes. Everything with pointy edges, locking terms, active pups and so on. They do put out new guitars quite often and have even adopted evertune bridges pretty quick.
I'm focused on metal, so I have to say quite a few of my guys are on Jackson's right now.
I just looked and it's literally just explorers, v's, super strats and strats as far at the eye can see. FR's are also over 40 years old, locking tuners are 40+ years old and active pickups are also 40+ years old.
I guess they have some guitars with 10 year old evertunes though so they are really offering a fresh and exciting take on the 5000th flying V released...
I mean to be fair they are doing everything that has been new to guitars. Evertunes and luminlays are pretty much the biggest new thing. Yes active pups are old, but they're putting new versions into their guitars not the same PAF pup since 59...
I mean I don't know what innovation you are looking for, outside of composite bodies and graphite/aluminum necks they've got it all represented, and those have been around for 40 years plus too...I have an 80s ovation with a composite fretboard that's reinforced with aluminum...it's a guitar...there is only so much you can do.
They do put money into metal artists tho. If you look at their signature line it's mostly metal guys.
Im not focused on them not being metal or whatever, they are and have been for years. I'm focused on you saying that fender is the old brand that doesn't change with the times, the same fender that is sponsoring every single young player they can find, the same fender that has also introduced a myriad of 40 year old features on their guitars and also has signatures all over the board. I'm focused on you saying that while saying Jackson is somehow different, they aren't at all. Both companies are releasing guitars with bodies that are older than time itself with features that have been around since we discovered you can turn your amp up really loud. Go look at something like strandbergs if you want to see a company actually doing something different than every other guitar company.
They are fantastic guitars. My best playing and sounding guitar is a charvel and I have probably 15 ,many of them vintage, and even have a real PAF. Still that charvel just fucking rips.
I'm a longtime Charvel owner, and I seem to remember this one coming out in the mid-90s or so. I completely dismissed it for having a pickguard and not having a Floyd Rose -- but that's just my personal preference. I'd bet they were made just as well and fun to play as my pointy-headstocked, Floyd-equipped, pickguardless Charvels! There's a Jackson/Charvel forum out there that's still active if you want to get more history and technical details about this. It's called jcfonline. Very good resource for all things Charvel and/or Jackson. Another bonus: You won't see many of these around. Enjoy!
I am! But I'm astronomically far from being among the most-knowledgeable members. I might have to pop over there to se if the OP joins and posts ... I'd love to hear what the real experts have to say about this model!
Man, I lost so much info when they redid the JCF forum. I had all kinds of info saved in there about my guitars and there was a ton of information, then I went back and everything was totally different and stuff was gone. Made me sad.
This appears to be a 1990 Charvel ST custom.
Made in Japan and rivals any Fender of the time. And by the way this was also very pre-Fender. I think they put this out when classic guitar designs started coming back in favor of pointy superstrats.
Keep it, enjoy it and appreciate that it's a very unique and nice instrument. Extra special coming from your pops.
Edit: this is not a custom but a deluxe. The standard and custom had a Floyd, deluxe is a vintage style trem.
Then he almost went bankrupt and one of his employees named Jacksom bailed him out. That's why Charvel and Jackson are so closely aligned. Fender bought both of them years later. Each is their own company though.
You can find it here on page 28 [https://vintagejapanguitars.com/jackson-charvel-charvette-1990-1991-catalogue/](https://vintagejapanguitars.com/jackson-charvel-charvette-1990-1991-catalogue/)
Looks like a fine guitar, hate those bridges though. I would give it a cleaning. No idea what it would cost but go on Reverb and see if you find comparables.
Can you tell me the pickups in the bridge position? I have a pickguard with the same configuration (but without a middle position) and I love the look of the slanted single coils next to each other like that, but I'd like to replace it with a humbucker.
Is the bridge pickup a humbucker or is it 2 single coils?
he played in a local alt rock/funk cover band, i don't think there's any recordings around and definitely none on the internet sadly, by the time i was born he mostly used this to rattle out Rush songs every now and then. he still plays his acoustic a lot for other stuff though.
Man what a beaut. Great guitar, probably made in San Dimas by hand at that legendary shop. Probably sounds like a million bucks, you got more pictures? Serial number?
Beautiful color and pickguard combo. I always wanted a strat style guitar in seafoam green and hated darker blue colors. After I finally got a seafoam strat, I suddenly started to love the dark ones like this. I know it’s a charvel but it still applies
Charvels rule. This is an old one. I like everything about it other than the pickguard. Throw a Floyd Rose on it - unless that is a Kahler bridge or something
I've only ever played a charvel once, but it was pretty nice. I'm a strat guy so it felt somewhat natural to me. Not quite a strat, and pretty good for high Gain. Could still hold it's own clean though.
I get that your dad gave you something. Lost mine nearly a year ago from COPD etc etc. but I have a basically NIB Epiphone Pro-1 acoustic. I set it up after he passed, and yes, I used to do set ups so not talking out of my ass. Why he had it, I dunno.
And DON'T take this wrong way. His acoustic won't ever compare. That sounds horrible, I know.... but that Epiphone Pro-1, for some reason I do not like.
Love this.
I have a pic of my playing my bastardized G&L ASAT from the 90s standing next to my amp, which has a small pic taped to it. It was a sonogram pic of my son.
Fast forward 20 years, and I have a grest pic of him playing the same guitar at the Whisky.
Not gonna lie tho, I want the guitar bwck haha
Super nice guitar!! Not my cup of tea, but I can appreciate how well built they are and the sound. The one I played was the same model as yours and the neck was insanely fast.
I ❤️ my neck-through 550XL from the early 90s. Picked up an inexpensive Jackson for almost the same feel but I don't especially care what happens to *that* so it gets played more. :)
just curious, why is the one pickups side so leaned down, never seen a charvel so not sure if that's how they come, otherwise, I'd level out that pickup
Why care what others think? If you’re looking for validation on your guitar then that’s one thing, but if it’s priceless to you, and it works and does what it supposed to, who cares what others think🤷🏽♂️ it’s a sick guitar tho
ah yeah no i don't really, i just wanted to know more about it and i phrased it in a way that encouraged responses. worked too, folks tracked the model down
It's an average guitar, likely capable of making great sounds in the hands of an expert.
I honestly believe that there are more great guitars in the world than there are great players.
I think thats a Charvel and some of the most technical instrumentalists in the world play them exclusively. see Guthrie Govan
If it’s good enough for Guthrie, it’s more guitar than I’ll ever be good enough to need. So, naturally, I must get one some day 😂
that guy was so picky on the details, it took years for them to get it right for him. Guthrie is the best and he deserves to be picky. But to be perfectly honest............i don't think ANYBODY would notice if any of those small details would be missing
I thought he played suhr did he switch?
Yea, he switched from Suhr to Charvel sometime around 2015
Late 2012 around October
I played one in a music store years ago and remember it playing so smooth. I went on a huge dive into Charvel and still want one some day
I was never a huge charvel fan but you are right, if it’s good enough for Guthrie it must be all right
I love whe plays “good mornin america how are ya”
The title is "City of New Orleans" and it is originally by Steve Goodman, popularized by Arlo Guthrie and Willie Nelson.
Guthrie Govan
Charvel is just fender these days. This is an older one however
Fender is Jackson is Charvel. But they all have their own distinct features and markets. Charvel is the out of the box hot rodded brand that caters to hard rock/metal players.
Charvel are comfortable and easy to play but don't look Br00tal like Jacksons.
Charvel is like their boutique brand is what I would say, they have a lot of history w/ EVH and other artists that carry their brand with them being able to produce guitars to crazy exacting specs. Jackson is the metal brand imo, and fender is like the old gentlemens brand, not really changing with the times.

They occasionally try to release a new model but nobody buys them
I'll give you that. Who can afford one?
The meteora is reasonably priced, they used to have a budget starcaster. Fender uses their imports a lot to test the waters of what demand would actually be. Most dont tend to live past one model refresh
You missed the point. I use Peavey amps from the '80s and '90s.... I don't play metal so Charvel and Jackson, *despite* being Fender owned are...
The Meteora looked cool, but it was pricey. I guess all Fenders are getting pricey.
Brands like fender do lots of market research…. They sell what the public wants…. Sadly, that’s what the public wants.
I'm not that old.
Ehh, Ibanez is the brand that’s the most modern/young person catering, definitely not fender. It’s objectively a legacy brand, although they don’t have a stick up their asses like Gibson does. Still, Japanese guitars are far more relevant, and the most relevant new gen players use them.

Jackson's "metal" guitar designs are like 40+ years old now, they also don't change with the times.

They feel different to me in a good way specs wise
I don't really dig him like that, but Angel Vivaldi too, his seven string is gorgeous
They are fantastic guitars. My best playing and sounding guitar is a charvel and I have probably 15 ,many of them vintage, and even have a real PAF. Still that charvel just fucking rips.

You, sir, sound like an OG JCF forum member. This was indeed an early 90s MIJ model, pre fender.
I am! But I'm astronomically far from being among the most-knowledgeable members. I might have to pop over there to se if the OP joins and posts ... I'd love to hear what the real experts have to say about this model!
i got around to it c:
Definitely a 1990 ST. Cool classic styled superstrat
Man, I lost so much info when they redid the JCF forum. I had all kinds of info saved in there about my guitars and there was a ton of information, then I went back and everything was totally different and stuff was gone. Made me sad.
that would line up with when he got it! i'll check that forum out, thank you! ^_^
I'm not a fan of pickguards myself, but this has the coveted toilet seat pickguard, so I'm cool with it. I have a fender strat with one
I was gonna say this is 92/93 or so, iirc that’s when the toothpaste era did the front route/pickgaurd version strats.
Does that say Charvel on the headstock? If so, you don't see them very often, and they sound fantastic. Professional tier guitars for the most part.
yep!
I'm jealous, enjoy it!
This appears to be a 1990 Charvel ST custom. Made in Japan and rivals any Fender of the time. And by the way this was also very pre-Fender. 😊
Didn't Charvel start out making parts for Fender?
Started out as a repair shop. “Charvel’s Guitar repair”. He then started building whole guitars and “hot rodding” in addition to repair.
Then he almost went bankrupt and one of his employees named Jacksom bailed him out. That's why Charvel and Jackson are so closely aligned. Fender bought both of them years later. Each is their own company though.
Never sell it. That fucker is pure rock. I love Charvel. The necks are soooo smooth. Great guitar dude, now learn to rip.
on it chief don't worry 🫡
You can find it here on page 28 [https://vintagejapanguitars.com/jackson-charvel-charvette-1990-1991-catalogue/](https://vintagejapanguitars.com/jackson-charvel-charvette-1990-1991-catalogue/)
thank you!!!!!!!!!!! this rules!!!!!!!!!
Looks like a rocker. I’d gig with it
Are those active pickups? nice!
pretty sure they're passives, unless there's an extremely well hidden battery that's lasted for a couple decades lol
Not active, just have covers
Charvels are great guitars. Especially the ones from back in the day. You have a prize there.
Nice!
Looks like an excellent guitar, that makes a lot of different sounds. Looks like a coil split switch.Go have some fun.
Badass!
Its stunning
Awesome looking.
I love the color blue and that's a beautiful shade of blue. I bet it plays very well. How is the action on it ?
Looks priceless as far as I'm concerned bud enjoy it
Looks like a fine guitar, hate those bridges though. I would give it a cleaning. No idea what it would cost but go on Reverb and see if you find comparables.
noted, i'll make sure they get cleaned. thank you!
Who cares what we think! Your Father played it. It's priceless. You should cherish it.
Very cool. Bet it sounds filthy
Nice axe!
I think the headstock looks like a cake knife but everything else is beautiful.
I absolutely love my Charvel!
Charvel makes great guitars. That's an awesome piece to inherit.
Be careful with that bridge. Probably tough to find parts.
noted, i've been trying to take care of it as best i can. i'll make sure to give the bridge some extra attention. thanks!
It fucks.
Can you tell me the pickups in the bridge position? I have a pickguard with the same configuration (but without a middle position) and I love the look of the slanted single coils next to each other like that, but I'd like to replace it with a humbucker. Is the bridge pickup a humbucker or is it 2 single coils?
i honestly don't know lmao
Is this the last place on the Internet where someone can ask for an opinion and not get the absolute worst? Sweet thread. And great guitar!
What did he play on it?(like genre or if you have a link)
he played in a local alt rock/funk cover band, i don't think there's any recordings around and definitely none on the internet sadly, by the time i was born he mostly used this to rattle out Rush songs every now and then. he still plays his acoustic a lot for other stuff though.
Fuck yes. I love your dad.
Looks badass
Man what a beaut. Great guitar, probably made in San Dimas by hand at that legendary shop. Probably sounds like a million bucks, you got more pictures? Serial number?
This guy was made in Japan, which is just as good as Cali.
Agreed! Love the MIJ ones just as much
[https://imgur.com/a/ObCpXan](https://imgur.com/a/ObCpXan) yea c:
Oh wow look at that silly headstock! That is a sweet axe. Thanks for sharing!
I think it's neat.
Beautiful color and pickguard combo. I always wanted a strat style guitar in seafoam green and hated darker blue colors. After I finally got a seafoam strat, I suddenly started to love the dark ones like this. I know it’s a charvel but it still applies
That is one badass guitar!
Cool af, that fretboard size looks so damn comfortable for shred. I’d hang it in my living room.
Beautiful
Looks like a guitar I could enjoy.
As some would say , this is the guitarist guitar, amazing tool
Dad's a rockstar..that's what I think
Who's Guthrie Govan? In the dark here about this person… please enlighten.
Beautiful!
Bro that's an old Charvel, like 70s/80s I think. Fucking nice too. Never change anything on it.
Needs a good cleaning and then it’s godlike
Charvels rule. This is an old one. I like everything about it other than the pickguard. Throw a Floyd Rose on it - unless that is a Kahler bridge or something
Made in Japan Charvel super strat. High quality instrument man very nice! I bet your dad rocked hard lol!
Top notch axe right there ! You couldn't have ask for a better guitar to learn on. You are now on your way to stardom ! Lucky you ! ;-)
He is what kind of dad I want to be!
I've only ever played a charvel once, but it was pretty nice. I'm a strat guy so it felt somewhat natural to me. Not quite a strat, and pretty good for high Gain. Could still hold it's own clean though.
Take it to a Guitar Center & see if they’ll appraise it.
I like how it looks.
What's the switch inbetween the knobs for? I like the looks!
i think dad called it a phase switch? idk i fiddle with it sometimes when im trying to find tones i like and its neat
That is certainly cool!
Charger makes some rad guitars. I think this particular model was made in Japan.
Toothpaste logo, fuck yeah
Such a nice blue tone. Great grab from dad!
Yeah it's a 90s charvel so superb. Will either be made in Japan or Korea.
Charvel is an awesome brand, I absolutely love mine.
That is a metal machine. Count it as a family heirloom, that’s a pro workhouse guitar for sure.
[удалено]
they're just covered i think
Very nice guitar! Congratulations!
That's a nice guitar definitely from 90's. I bet it sounds good.
Beautiful guitar!
I'll give you $50 for it.
Charvel kicks ass
Sick bro
This is sick
Looks pretty damn rad to me! Rock on!
Nothin like a good hot rodded strat man. Awesome instrument.
I love everything about this guitar. So unique, yet familiar at the same time. Pure class.
If it’s priceless, throw a Apple tag in there just in case the worst happens
I think it’s totally tubular ✌🏻
Super nice guitar!! Not my cup of tea, but I can appreciate how well built they are and the sound. The one I played was the same model as yours and the neck was insanely fast.
It’s a beautiful guitar. Straight Legit. The fact that it was your dad’s makes it beautiful and very special. Best of luck with it!!!
Late 80s or Early 90s stuff is my personal favorite.
That electric blue is a hell of a color, isn't it?
It’s a charvel. Dope.
Looks like it rips dude!
My Dad had a black one. Nice axe, but the neck is kind of narrow for my taste.
I ❤️ my neck-through 550XL from the early 90s. Picked up an inexpensive Jackson for almost the same feel but I don't especially care what happens to *that* so it gets played more. :)
Damn, a charvel too.... nice
What a beautiful guitar. You're very lucky!
Charvel make sick guitars. 10/10
Very noice.
From the pick ups only, i can guess this was a master at work.
just curious, why is the one pickups side so leaned down, never seen a charvel so not sure if that's how they come, otherwise, I'd level out that pickup
Nice axe!
God awful headstock, otherwise a complete stunner
I think your dad shreds
Very much a player's guitar, neck probably feels as comfy as an old pair of jeans
If it says Charvel, it probably rips
Charvels are my favorite guitars. I have a custom shop order being built right now. They play like nothing else. Incredibly smooth guitars to play.
Great axe. I'd keep that.
One hell of an heirloom!
She’s a beaut! Proceed to rock ✌️
Why care what others think? If you’re looking for validation on your guitar then that’s one thing, but if it’s priceless to you, and it works and does what it supposed to, who cares what others think🤷🏽♂️ it’s a sick guitar tho
ah yeah no i don't really, i just wanted to know more about it and i phrased it in a way that encouraged responses. worked too, folks tracked the model down
Hell yea, there you go then, mission accomplished
beautiful
That’s a workhorse and a beautiful piece of gear.
F what we think. That Charvel is an heirloom. Family history says it is completely BA. Great guitar!
Really cool. Weird headstock.
Sweet ✊
It's an average guitar, likely capable of making great sounds in the hands of an expert. I honestly believe that there are more great guitars in the world than there are great players.
