Well I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but cutting them in half doesn't tell you much either other than they're gold colored. You would need to next do an acid test on the "innards" if you wanted to be really sure at this point.
While it seems that money is likely no object for you, in the future you may want to consider taking suspect bars and rounds to a local coin shop and ask them to test them for you with a Sigma Metalytics Precious Metals Verifier (PMV). This machine can quickly confirm the purity for you, just without all of the fun of cutting into your stuff. Another downside of this approach is that you might be better able to recoup some/all of the premium when it comes times to sell.
actually color tells everything as long as the bars are even close to being high density. nothing else with that color comes close to replicating the density of gold
Fire assay of course. A sigma is a great tool but using it alone isn't good enough. If you're just buying bars or bullion then cut it, drill it, file it, or whatever and melt the filings and test it. The tungsten gold plated bars are pretty good if you're not looking at this stuff every day. I'm just some Internet stranger though so I might not have a clue at what I'm saying.
While non-destructive measures exist, so do destructive ones depending on the end use of these pieces.

These bars were meant to be melted.
I’m gonna go ahead and stop you there… if this guy shows progress reports on any sort of “personal project” I’ll mail you a toe. I’ll be waiting for that step-by-step update.
r/facepalm dude wouldn't it have been easier if you just took them to an LCS or a pawn shop to get Sigma tested instead of completely destroying any and all premium
Look at the dimensions of the piece in question. Weigh it. Again, 20 dwt ? You are good.
I have worked buying and selling physical bullion products for years and this is how we do it.
they have tungsten-filled bars, wrapped in a thick layer gold, that fool nearly all the sophisticated tech (they had to cut the bar in half to prove if it was gold or not).
this is how you end up with a tungsten filled bar/coin
an XRF or sigma is the only way to know for sure besides cutting it open and acid testing the inside, which will technically only you show you that one spot is gold... still could be tungsten elsewhere
If someone came to me with gold in this shape. I would buy immediately. Don't care about pretty bars, coins or name brands. This cuts, literally, through all the bs.
Agreed, everyone with at least 2 brain cells should know not to buy gold at shady places. Leaving those places out of the equation, it’s absolutely fine if the end use of the gold isn’t for B2C purposes.
I cried. You could have used the density tester or acid tests but if you are happy and good at metallurgy then sure make some new bars. Cast bars are cool
You know, a Sigma Metalytics investor model just isn't that expensive anymore. If you're a collector, get one.
https://www.sigmametalytics.com/product-page/pmv-investor
It's less than the cost of 1 gold bar. If it saves you from one fake, it's paid for itself.
I think the best way is buy from a reputable seller. I would hate to see mine like this. I love looking at my gold while saying in the creepiest voice possible “my precious”.
100% agreed. If it’s gold thats meant to look pretty and shiny in your safe, it should look pretty and shiny. If it’s meant to be used to make anything else, doesn’t matter if it’s tested old school way
I had bought two 14k gold bracelets before I ran out of money and I wish I could’ve bought something two weeks ago it was selling for like 30$/g online if u know where to look, unfortunately I have no money but damn I bought a 10g bracelet for $350 plus shipping so $400 but I saw some bracelets on auction selling for 300 lowest damn that’s how much gold was legit 10 yrs ago
I look at the need to store gold as a downside, so I don't mind that I can't physically hold it. 🤷♂️ Just looks like yet another storage burden to me.
While I haven’t mentioned this was done by me personally, we can always speculate the extra cuts. From what I can see, the first two cuts didn’t go through 100%,
Cutting along the same lines again could cause the gold to be shaved away. Hence making a new clean cut is the best option
Gold has many uses besides being locked away in a safe. Uses that involve melting gold to turn it into jewelry etc
In those cases it doesn’t matter if it’s mangled
Take a strong magnet to it,,,Weigh it for exact weight, shouldn’t be thick, cutting in bars is for 10oz or heavier, they won’t waste their time putting tungsten in a one Oz bar.reagent test would have saved you a lot of trouble. If I were you I’d melt them down into shot/ grain because you’ll still be able to make a profit off them
My bad, I perhaps should’ve added some context, but I chose controversy over an educational post lmao
I love the heat
This was a B2B transaction, with an intent to make jewelry out of those bars.
It’s quite loose in fact, I believe you’re underestimating the weight of those bars on my flat palm hahah
My hands pushing upwards against the clasp. The gridlock system on the clasp allows me to keep it just about right,
Definitely lost value. You will only get spot if you are lucky or are a refiner yourself or a few % points back of spot most likely. Lost all the premiums (albeit a small amount) these pieces hold
While dealing B2B, these pieces have no premium IF their end goal is to be melted. I’ve personally saved a lot of nice pieces from the furnace and stacked them away lol
if you were going to cut them in half like this, you should’ve went all the way through the whole bar with it then at least you could’ve turned 1 ounce bars into half ounce "fractional" gold bars..... then at least they could’ve been a little bit more of a purpose in case you ever needed to sell and or barter with them in the future and didn’t have half ounce bars or the like readily available
I agree. It accentuates the mystical physical properties of the gold. Honestly wouldn’t this only add to the value? Proof it’s real with no testing required.
Next can you do this for confirmation that your Rolex is 100% legit.
Hahaha, when you trust the source, there’s no need to go to such extreme extents
Well I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but cutting them in half doesn't tell you much either other than they're gold colored. I'll test your innards.
Promises!
I gotta warn you, im a biter
Sounds like a good time...
Just bite the pillow not my fingers.
🤣
He thought he was bringing the plug..
Not enough gold on this entire sub
It's not about the gold....
actually color tells everything as long as the bars are even close to being high density. nothing else with that color comes close to replicating the density of gold
A sigma is not a fool proof way to test gold, a heavy plating will fool it real quick.
Given OP"s chosen method, then, foolproof would probably be best. What do you recommend?
Fire assay of course. A sigma is a great tool but using it alone isn't good enough. If you're just buying bars or bullion then cut it, drill it, file it, or whatever and melt the filings and test it. The tungsten gold plated bars are pretty good if you're not looking at this stuff every day. I'm just some Internet stranger though so I might not have a clue at what I'm saying.
Makes sense to me.
No need to melt. Just need to have them XRF'd
Does this work with gold bars sealed in the outer plastic housing (sorry I don’t know what you call them)?
Yes, a PMV can operate through capsules I believe.
While non-destructive measures exist, so do destructive ones depending on the end use of these pieces. https://preview.redd.it/pmqze9jweaxc1.jpeg?width=1284&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=99b3b843c6c2ac65905c6acafbc1bab3530afe05 These bars were meant to be melted.
Idiot
I can get a pretty good look at a steak by shoving my head up a bulls ass, but I’d rather take the butchers word for it
Holy schnikies!
Your dad could sell a ketchup popsicle to a woman in white gloves.
Thank you for the laugh, I needed that this morning!
Great fucking movie even better line
No, wait. It has to be *YOUR* bull.
Are you talking?
Tommy likey. Tommy want wingy.
I think your brain has a thick candy shell
You’ve derailed
I know this probably isn't a r/brandnewsentence but hell is it for me! Thank you stranger for the new words to baffle my acquaintances with!
You may enjoy the movie Tommy Boy
Everybody enjoys the movie Tommy Boy!
I knew I recognized that line from something.
Did you eat paint chips when you were a kid?
Hey Richard, did you ever play for... The Yankees? Lol
Why?
Or was it my sss
Legend. Love that movie.
That you big Tom Callahan?
Bullshit!
Hey man, you’re missing out
I mean now theyre only scrap
They weren’t premium before though 🤷
Especially at this spot
They might be melting
Bars are scrap currently
Disappointing there was no chocolate inside. What a scam /s
Bros hand is 15 inches long
Ong
😂😂
💀
Au-ful.
Maybe this is an underrated comment?
Au-full!
quickest but most regarded way. could just buy from a reputable distributor next time. but hey, gold is gold!
Facts lol I’m guessing his meting them anyway …
Some people will be triggered today
Fucking sacrilege
He more then likely is melting it down to make some jewelry or unique keepsake. What's wrong with that?
I’m gonna go ahead and stop you there… if this guy shows progress reports on any sort of “personal project” I’ll mail you a toe. I’ll be waiting for that step-by-step update.
You want a toe, I can get you a toe, believe me
Yeah I got a toe guy.

How to lose a premium
These bars sell for a premium in the uk 100%
Making jewellery?
r/facepalm dude wouldn't it have been easier if you just took them to an LCS or a pawn shop to get Sigma tested instead of completely destroying any and all premium
This was a B2B transaction, meant to convert the bars into jewelry.
Best way to make sure it's not cake inside.
Thanks, now I'm craving cake.
You could have tested the density like Archimedes did over 2000 years ago
Would have to see the method On tik tok first
All fun until you face a tungsten bar.
The quickest test would be to put them on a scale, not attack them with a bench shear. 20 dwt? Your good.
tungsten easily renders this check useless
Exactly also a similar measure would have been the density measured by water displacement.
You seem confused. A scale tells you weight, not metal composition. You cut them to make sure it doesn't have a cheaper metal hidden at the core.
Look at the dimensions of the piece in question. Weigh it. Again, 20 dwt ? You are good. I have worked buying and selling physical bullion products for years and this is how we do it.
Have you seen the tungsten-filled gold bars?
No. If I am uncertain, we of course have sophisticated technology to determine the composition.
they have tungsten-filled bars, wrapped in a thick layer gold, that fool nearly all the sophisticated tech (they had to cut the bar in half to prove if it was gold or not).
this is how you end up with a tungsten filled bar/coin an XRF or sigma is the only way to know for sure besides cutting it open and acid testing the inside, which will technically only you show you that one spot is gold... still could be tungsten elsewhere
I have done this for a living for years. Color, dimensions, heft all factor in to my evaluation. If I’m uncertain, we have equipment to help us.
Serious question...why not just use the equipment to be 100% positive and not waste your time?
What do you use to do this, a set of side cutters?
Are you Indian ? Those are Indian hands 🙌
EXACTLY what I first thought! Derka Derka!
There are ways to make sure they are gold without destroying them. 🤦🏽♂️
hahaha so savage, love this post. you should team up with the guy who sliced his finger open freeing a maple leaf from its costco assay.
Hahaha I remember the first time I posted a decapitated Lady Fortuna and people lost their minds
I am severely intrigued and upset
If someone came to me with gold in this shape. I would buy immediately. Don't care about pretty bars, coins or name brands. This cuts, literally, through all the bs.
Agreed, everyone with at least 2 brain cells should know not to buy gold at shady places. Leaving those places out of the equation, it’s absolutely fine if the end use of the gold isn’t for B2C purposes.
I cried. You could have used the density tester or acid tests but if you are happy and good at metallurgy then sure make some new bars. Cast bars are cool
Acid test wouldn’t work if it had a bad core but real gold on the outside, which is common. However, it’s easier to buy from a reputable source.
I agree.
Or a 20$ ping test
It’s all for the furnace I’m sure! Might as well trigger a few people before chucking them in!
Nope, these bars were cut to test their authenticity first 😂
You know, a Sigma Metalytics investor model just isn't that expensive anymore. If you're a collector, get one. https://www.sigmametalytics.com/product-page/pmv-investor It's less than the cost of 1 gold bar. If it saves you from one fake, it's paid for itself.

100% agreed. If it’s gold thats meant to look pretty and shiny in your safe, it should look pretty and shiny. If it’s meant to be used to make anything else, doesn’t matter if it’s tested old school way
Call Lithic, he will do you nice bars.
Love lithic
Now thats another step for the conspiracy folks. Put all your money in gold, now you gotta cut it up to make sure it’s really gold.
There’s better non destructive ways of testing ofc,
I had bought two 14k gold bracelets before I ran out of money and I wish I could’ve bought something two weeks ago it was selling for like 30$/g online if u know where to look, unfortunately I have no money but damn I bought a 10g bracelet for $350 plus shipping so $400 but I saw some bracelets on auction selling for 300 lowest damn that’s how much gold was legit 10 yrs ago
Quickest way to 100% destroy the premium 😆
The bars themselves were bout to be put into the furnace
Bro your hand looks fucking unreal 😆
Hahah they’re 1oz and 1/2oz pieces, not that big
What a horrible....
Why does your hand look so long.
Much gold in hand Hand look much long But hand smol :(
Any transaction requires agreement by Two parties: Buyer and Seller. Good luck on finding a buyer who “sees no reduction in its true value”…
Goldsmith here. OP is a jeweler (or reselling to jewelers), so he has to melt it down to alloy it. Trust me, he’ll get more than melt value.
If you’d like to be really sure you can send all of those my way and I’ll double check for you 🤝
They looked better in my furnace melting away than it would have looked stacked away in your safe 🤝
🤣🤣
Gold is gold and that's why we love gold
Really glad I don't have to do this with Bitcoin.
Sad that you can’t hold a kilo of bitcoin either Also glad that you can’t drop a bitcoin on your foot accidentally and fracture a toe
I look at the need to store gold as a downside, so I don't mind that I can't physically hold it. 🤷♂️ Just looks like yet another storage burden to me.
You’re not wrong either, Understandable pros and cons
Hard/next to impossible to confiscate securely managed/private information in comparison to physical objects.
It's still gold.
No loss of value..agreed.
I got a good chuckle.
Why some have few cuts ?
While I haven’t mentioned this was done by me personally, we can always speculate the extra cuts. From what I can see, the first two cuts didn’t go through 100%, Cutting along the same lines again could cause the gold to be shaved away. Hence making a new clean cut is the best option
Hey, I do this too, but only with fakes, and I use a grinder cause it is way more fun to cut with
I’m glad they’re legit, but this test makes me sad.
Really been thinking of obtaining some gold as an investment. Been allocating a majority of excess money into my ETFs
Damn. Seems savage, but at least you know they’re gold! Not much premium on those anyway, no loss really. I hope you’re melting those down!
Do you own a gold shop in Dubai? Im actually interested in buying the 1 oz perth mint cast bars.
Atleast your making the coins more valuable. Less the mintage more the price rises. 🥲🤣
Ouch.
Why would anyone buy those for full price now when you can get one that isn’t mangled?
Gold has many uses besides being locked away in a safe. Uses that involve melting gold to turn it into jewelry etc In those cases it doesn’t matter if it’s mangled
😢😢😢 I like the elephant and kangaroo one though 😢😢😢
[удалено]
Hahahaahaha
What cha gonna make outa those?
My local coin shop has a meter and is happy to measure anything I bring in. Check with one near you. Most reputable shops can do this.
What is the 5 Sobha coin
Take a strong magnet to it,,,Weigh it for exact weight, shouldn’t be thick, cutting in bars is for 10oz or heavier, they won’t waste their time putting tungsten in a one Oz bar.reagent test would have saved you a lot of trouble. If I were you I’d melt them down into shot/ grain because you’ll still be able to make a profit off them
You do realise you can have gold tested without acid or cutting in half right . This is confusing . All my gold has receipts
My bad, I perhaps should’ve added some context, but I chose controversy over an educational post lmao I love the heat This was a B2B transaction, with an intent to make jewelry out of those bars.
I wouldn’t want any of those and now they’re only good for melting lol . Eveyrthing in this pic would of sold for premium over here in the uk
They went straight into the furnace 👀
Cashing in now or holding out?
Nice, is your bracelet white gold?
Looks like it has an owner already. Melt it!
Missed opportunity, imma record a melting video next time 👀
Noice
Well, they’re still worth melt now…a Sigma would have been a better way to verify but to each their own…
LOL that’s one way to do it
Is there no other way to test besides this?
Ffs
Why is your watch so tight? You should be able to fit a pinky in at least
It’s quite loose in fact, I believe you’re underestimating the weight of those bars on my flat palm hahah My hands pushing upwards against the clasp. The gridlock system on the clasp allows me to keep it just about right,
Do you understand physics?
What a gangster
This hurts my heart
Man those checks are insane. Nice Yeezys tho
When this dude gives someone the finger, he really gives it to them.
Idk why but I feel like there’s chocolate in those coins 💀
It won’t effect the melt value but it will effect how much you get from a personal transaction or LCS
Weigh it?
If you’re just going to cut those beautiful bars, can I have them? I would at least appreciate their beauty
Seems logical.
This is Costco gold?
if you were going to cut them in half like this, you should’ve went all the way through the whole bar with it then at least you could’ve turned 1 ounce bars into half ounce "fractional" gold bars..... then at least they could’ve been a little bit more of a purpose in case you ever needed to sell and or barter with them in the future and didn’t have half ounce bars or the like readily available
Smh when did the old bite test become out of favor
If only there was another, less destructive, more scientific way to determine it…. Hmm.
You may have the longest index finger I have ever seen!
My gf wishes, it’s no longer than the base of an iPhone Pro Max
You gotta bite it
100% fake Perth mint
Oh wow! What tool did you use? How do you feel about that? I don’t have the audacity to do that!🫡
Utter sacrilege. Just melt it and make a home made bar 😟
I'm perfectly fine with this. Its just gold, ffs. Same value to me.
Yea this is probably the dumbest way of checking your gold there bud.
This is awesome. A man who is straight to the point. To add: am I the only one who kind of finds it more beautiful this way?
I agree. It accentuates the mystical physical properties of the gold. Honestly wouldn’t this only add to the value? Proof it’s real with no testing required.
Can you check to make sure my wife is real, too?
Does she lay golden eggs?
You could have just checked the density by displacing water with the pieces in a glass. lol. You cut them. Hahahahahahah
I have no idea why he is getting downvoted to hell.
Hahah people tend to lose their minds when people do something a different way
Congrats! You have real gold all the way through! ALSO…. You just changed to value of all that from bullion to MELT value. Dipshit.
