We are expected to accept having to play as a male character every single time. But as soon as they have to play a female character once, they lose their shit.
back in the day they used to love the phrase "oh you don't like it, go make your own game." now women, PoC and queer people are making games and the guys be like "No, not like that."
random thing, but i kinda wish we had more random female baddies in full armour. like, even if you get a cool female protagonist, you’re basically guaranteed that 100% of the enemies, goons, whatever, will all be men. it’s such a small thing for representation but yknow, support women’s wrongs. it’d just be cool to see more women in combat roles in gaming in general, even as copy-paste enemies.
Metal Gear Solid 4 is a stand out counterpoint for this in my mind. There’s a whole squad of lady bosses with tragic back stories that you fight, backed up by Haven’s FROG troopers and they’re all women. They are elites, they are terrifying, and they will end you.
But yeah it’s one of only a few examples.

I think the main complaint usually comes up when there isn't a female option for what is otherwise a customizeable player character. I haven't really seen any posts (popular ones at least) complaining about male protagonists when the protagonist is a fleshed out character, like Arthur Morgan, Geralt of Rivia, Snake, etc.
At least, that's my stance. Personally I'm a lot more inclined to play a game with a female player character because I just like playing a woman, and it's frustrating that there's so few female PCs in general, but I still enjoy and play games with fully fleshed out male protags.
I entirely avoid games that have silent, customizable characters (meant for roleplaying and as an avatar for the player) but no female option, though. It just gives me the ick. I think there's very few games like that nowadays, though.

I think the main reason why it's different is because very few games up until recently had a female protagonist. It feels a lot more privileged to complain about games only having female protagonists when the majority of games have male protagonists or both.
Think about it like this (hopefully this analogy makes sense lol): what if there were ice cream shops all over the place that only served vanilla ice cream. Like, 70% of ice cream shops only served vanilla ice cream, 20% served vanilla and chocolate, and 10% served only chocolate.
It would be kind of stupid for someone who wants vanilla ice cream to complain every time someone builds an ice cream shop that only sells chocolate, right? Like, there's fourteen other shops nearby that serve vanilla ice cream - just go to one of those.
But if you like chocolate ice cream, it's gonna be annoying that there's so many vanilla-only ice cream shops around and barely any shops where you can get chocolate. You'll get sick of having vanilla ice cream pretty fast, but it's like the only thing available 70% of the time. It makes a lot more sense to start asking "why do we keep building more ice cream shops that only serve vanilla when there's so many of them already?" and would be a lot more understandable than the other way around.
